Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
Progressive scan dvd players use component cables mostly.
HDMI is used by cable boxes, upscale DVD players, Blu Ray, HD DVD are the main ones.
My tv only has one HDMI, and I have no need for another one at this point.Comment

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
Do all cable boxes use HDMI? Because I don't think I have HDMI on the TV I have right now and got it like 3 years ago, was HDMI common back then?Comment

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
HDMI replaced DVI, it's been pretty popular the last year and a half or so. Your cable box can also use component with no problem.Comment

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
Gamer, why would you rank them this way? I'm looking into possibly getting a tv this weekend because of the sales and it's been something I've been wanting to get for quite a while but haven't had enough cash to do it. Here are the four I've found that interest me:
Hitachi 57" CRT RearProj HDTV Model:57F59
- HHGregg $1139.97
- Circuit City $1349.99
Samsung 56" DLP RearPrj HDTV Model: HLS5686W
- Best Buy $1898.99
- (There is another model I've seen HLS5687W, with a hugh difference in price but it looks like the same tv??)
Toshiba 56" DLP RearProj HDTV Model: 56HM66
- HHGregg $1799.97
- Best Buy $1898.99
Sony 55" WEGA LCD RearProj HDTV Model: KDF55E2000
- Circuit City $1899.99
- Best Buy $1898.99
- HHGregg $1803.94
I'm leaning towards either the Sony LCD or the Hitachi CRT models. Any opinions?MLB: Cincinnati Reds
NFL: Cincinnati Bengals
NCAA Hoops: Xavier Musketeers
NCAA Football: Miami Hurricanes
NHL: Calgary Flames

If you can get a good CRT, they can produce some of the best picture that money can buy. Look at the Sony WEGA that Extreme recommended, it has one of the best screens I have seen and can even challenge low end LCD's and Plasma's. LCD's also have a problem with displaying blacks properly.
If you get a CRT professionally calibrated, the pic can be so beautiful. Tube CRT's weigh from 100-200 lbs, RPTV's weigh from 200-250 + large cabinet, LCD's & Plasmas are light in weight and can be hung on a wall.
DLP's are the next generation of RPTV's and they eliminate things like burn-in, glare, and oversized cabinets.
At home, I have a 23" Samsung LCD, 50" Toshiba HD RPTV, and a 30" Toshiba HD CRT. My movies look best on the 50" Toshiba RPTV.
Just a recommendation, stay away from Toshiba. Their TV's the last few years have been just ok, if anything off that list I would go with Samsung 56" DLP RearPrj. My next TV will be a DLP when it's time to replace the RPTV. Toshiba has been having Orion supply the tubes for their CRT's which is a US company that makes the crap TV's for Walmart. There has been too many problems with their TV's last 2-3 years.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
It's commonly known that CRT still outperforms every other type of TV. LCD and DLP are catching up fast, but CRT is still the best. The problem with CRT is that it's heavy and big. LCD and Plasma is thin and able to hang on a wall, DLP is also very thin.Gamer, why would you rank them this way? Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
My guess is that the difference in those 2 models is the DLP chip that's used. The HLS5687W would have the better chip, but I don't know how much of a difference you'd be able to see. When I bought my Samsung DLP, they had something similar and the more expensive model used a different DLP chip. I couldn't tell a difference when looking at both sets though.Last edited by mjb2124; 09-01-2006, 07:35 PM.Comment

Thanks for the input, fellas. This area of entertainment is uncharted territory for me, as far as gathering information, for the most part since I just haven't been in a position to invest in one. I appreciate the comments.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread
Does anyone have a 1080p set and uses an Xbox 360 with it? Was reading about some issues with that.
Edit: Here's an example of another one I've looked at (not the 55" though) which I may buy but don't want to limit myself on what game system I can use on it. Know what I mean?
