Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I apologize for the naive question. I am looking at the 46 inch Samsung 4665 hdtv. My question is, if I watch cable tv in 1080p or 1080i will the picture fill the screen or will it be in 4:3 letterbox format? I know the hi-def channels will be widescreen and fill it up, but what about the other 250 channels on my cable system? Will I only be seeing about 70% of the available real estate covered and dealing with side bars?

You'll be dealing with side bars, unless you zoom in or stretch the picture, but that can make it look funky. There's no way around this issue, SDTV is just not widescreen and there's no magical way to make it widescreen.

Alright so, again, I'm going for an HD monitor with VGA inputs. Are there any specific boxes where I can connect my PS2 and Xbox to them with composite or component inputs? (I have both component and composite)

I can't give you a link but I recall seeing those a couple years ago when I was looking around for something and I think they ran about $79. Probably a lot cheaper now.

What does it mean when a tv says that it is 1080i/720p/480p/480i compatible? Does it actually mean it's 1080i resolution or what?

im contemplating getting a Widescreen monitor for my 360, or should i get a 32" cheaper LCD(cheaper as in not top of the line)? Take in to consideration i have a wife and two kids, so cost would be an issue

I'd look at Vizio if you're looking for affordability and quality. I have their 32inch LCD and it's beautiful.

Question: Is there a 'guide' for screen size based on how far away you would be sitting? I'm thinking about purchasing my first HDTV soon.

Yeah I've heard nothing but great things about Vizio too.

Hey you guys I got a question - when I go home from work I always watch Seinfeld before I go work out. I usually am gone for about a half hour. Should I leave the TV on or turn it off when I go work out?

I know this tv lamp only has so many hours in it but am I shortening more by turning it off, then back on or am I doing the right thing by just turning it off for the 30-40 minutes that i'm gone?

I've always heard that if its going to be off ~<45 minutes to just leave it on for DLP's. So, I would say that both ways should be about the same, but I tend to leave mine on for anything under 1 hour.

Panasonic vs Samsung. Sam does only up to 720p, while Panasonic does all three and has a higher contrast ratio.

Should I pass on the Samsung cause it doesn't support 1080i? I might swat one of these TVS with one from my bed room so it might do some minor gaming sometime so do I need 1080i or is 720p enough.

My living room TV supports up to 1080p but I do most of my gaming at 720p and I'm fine but don't want to get owned later cause it isn't able to support 1080i.
Well I ended up getting neither. I took my bedroom TV and put it in the kitchen and got this:

                              http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/howTo...ores=true#tabs

It was on sale Thursday but the price went back up.

So far I am in love with this TV. If anyone is looking for a solid 32'' HDTV this is one worth taking a look at.

                              Hail Toshiba!
