Bottom line, this Sony, properly adjusted, produced the best LCD flat panel HD image the HD Guru™ has seen to date. A number of factors are responsible. This panel creates some of the deepest blacks and the best contrast ratio seen on an LCD display. The Samsung/Sony SPVA LCD panel it uses, is, in the HD Guru™’s opinion, is the best LCD panel in the industry. Within the LCD category, the HD Guru™ awards the KDL-46XBR4 ♥♥♥♥.

However, compared to other flat panel HDTVs, regardless of technology, the rating drops down to ♥♥♥, simply because the best plasma TVs produce better images, with better reds, wider viewing angles, and significantly better motion detail and usually for less money!
Thank you. I think we may get this model.

Ok, so I know the basics of HDTV I guess. Was looking to possibly get one this year, as I plan on watching a LOT of football.

Is there any reason to NOT pick a DLP over an LCD, other than thickness? There is a 50" Samsung 1080p DLP on Amazon for $1264 with free shipping, seems like a good deal (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HLT507...7747764&sr=1-3)

Comparably sized and spec'd LCD's seem a lot more expensive.

      What am I missing?

The viewing angles aren't near as good as LCD which in turn has viewing angles not quite as good as plasma. For the DLP, if you aren't sitting directly in front of the tv, the image will appear darker the further off center you sit.

If viewing angles aren't important to you, DLP will fit the bill(and that does look like a nice price).

I have a 2 year old Toshiba DLP set and it there is NO problem with the viewing angles side to side. The only issue is vertical. If you stand up and are looking down at the TV the picture is darker.

              OK guys,

Bought my first HDtv this week. We decided on the Poloroid 32' out of Wallyworld(Walmart). We also splurged on a new 360(for those who didn't know my last one was stolen in a burglary earlier this year). We bought Oblivion again, and I bought APF for $40 at Best Buy. Now I've read on this thread about native resolution, what is that and how can i tell so I can get the best picture on our new TV? Any other general pointers, 'cause this thread is rather long.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I just returned my 47' 1080p vizio after having horrible clouding for a Sony 55' 1080p SXRD w/ matching stand.

The Sony has a much more natural picture with richer colors. The black levels are excellent, I can watch dark movies again without the clouding ruining it.

The stand that came with the TV weighed almost as much as the TV itself!!!

I liked the Vizio, but you can't go wrong with Sony. (the one and only)

                    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HLT467...815394&sr=1-27

Its the 46" Samsung DLP. I'd use it for everything, TV watching, gaming, DVD's.

Seems like a nice price point.

So if I'm gonna buy a TV, looks like I'm gonna go with the 42" Vizio LCD. Seems like a solid purchase. I'm not an audio or video-phile so just looking for a decent HDTV, and this seems to give the best bang for the buck. I didn't really like the DLP's, they are bulkier than what I was hoping to get.

                      Here is the TV.

Opinions on this one? What about the extended warranty? Its 129 for three years, but its in home service and they replace it if they can't fix it.

I've gotta defend DLP a little here. What do you mean bulkier? My 50" Samsung DLP is big yes but weighs very little. The back of it does go back a bit but unless you plan to mount the screen on the wall or have a very tight enclosure that means nothing really. If you're looking for bang for your buck then going LCD is not the way to go. However if you need a TV to fit in a small place or plan to mount it then I can see LCD over DLP.

I have to agree with ODogg. Unless you plan on hanging your TV on the wall, I don't see how the physical dimensions of an HDTV matter. My DLP is probably about 13" deep, but even if it was paper-thin it still couldn't be positioned any differently because it's sitting over top of my receiver, 360, etc., each of which is just as deep if not deeper.

Well, what I mean by bulkier is that the DLPs are at least 2-3x as thick as the LCD's.

I've got nothing against the DLP, but yes, eventually this TV is going to be wall-mounted. I really though about the 46" samsung, $999 at circuit city/best buy is a very good deal. That is the same price as the LCD I'm looking at.

I have that DLP and I love it. I weighs like 46lbs. I have my 360 hooked up through the VGA port. Unlike LCD's you can change you're own DLP bulbs. I got mines at BB for $899 om sale. And you can't go wrong with a Sammy.

I don't have the 42" but do have the 32" in my bedroom and love it. I worked in electronics at Sears and would put DLPs slightly behind plasmas and LCDs. I wasn't a big fan of DLPs but told people to let their own eyes and ears be the judge. Can't go wrong with either of the 3 technologies.

Most people said that if they are laying down that much money, they wanted to go "modern"=flat panel.
