Hey guys,
I'm thinking about picking up an HDTV, but it would need to fit my budget which is around $500. At Target they have the Philips 30" 30PW9110D on clearance for $489.99, and I've really been thinking about picking it up. I've heard some bad things about Philips but I have a Philips widescreen tv that I've had for about 2 1/2 years and have had absolutely no problems with it. I'm thinking in my price range I'll need to CRT, but maybe you guys have some advice for me. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Good choice, that's what I got too. Welcome to the Samsung club. Love your avatar too btwWell after a week of looking, thinking, and struggling I finally bought my new tv, a 50' Samsung DLP. I had a front DLP projector with an 100' screen for about 3 years and loved it but just wanted something different I also wanted a little more light in my apartment.
It took about 3 hours to get everything setup and working and I love it.
I tested everything, ps2, xbox, gc, 360, and dvd player and everything looked great. I have regular cable and it looked descent. I am going to get an OTA antenna today to see about Local HD channels.

My next question, to anyone who would be more knowledgable than me, is if you guys think that there will be significant price drops over the course of the next 6 months or so with HDTV technology. I'm just asking because I'm in college and currently there's six of us who share our house. The tv would obviously take a lot of wear with so many people using it, so I could also just save and hold off till next leasing term (June) and get something nicer if the prices are going to drop, along with me saving up more money over that time.Comment

I don't think there will be a big price decrease over the next 6 months really. I'd guess the sets will come down some though. Say a $2000 set now in 6 months may be $1800 or so. There will always be new technologies or modifications to existing ones. Find an HDTV that you like and is in your price range and buy it. You'll either upgrade every few years or not. Trust me, you won't regret an HDTV purchase after seeing HD content!
That being said, you are now getting three-chip DLP front projectors (no rainbows) that are affordable, more 1080p TV's which are the new buzz, THX certified drywall, rumored SED or LED single-chip DLP rear projectors for next year, larger plasma displays, brands that are calibrated at the factory (Runco and Olevea), etc.
In January, at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) you'll find out what's to come in 2008. Then you'll really know if you should wait

Ok, question: 720 or 1080.. which should I be playing on? I have a 30 inch widescreen tube t.v.. I played with both, but don't notice a difference. What do those numbers mean?Comment

For a CRT (i.e. "tube" TV) you want to set it on 1080i. 720p means 1280x720 resolution displayed in one pass (progressive). 1920x1080 is 1080i resolution, which is displayed in two passes (i = interlaced). Since CRT's do not have native resolutions, it is usually better to display in the highest possible resolution as possible, in this case 1080i. If you buy a different TV w/ a native resolution, output that.

Well basically I got my original name (mrs. carraba) from my adoration for the lead singer of Dashboard Confessional. Yes at one point I actually wanted to marry him. Well I've since grown up a little, and now I'm not really a fan of that band anymore. But I wanted to keep the name "carrabba" in just so I wouldn't have a completely new name.. so I figured I'd go with this.
Now hopefully I won't be mistaken for female.. not that there's anything wrong with them, I love em!Comment

Vanns has the 1080P SXRDs on sale.
2199.99 for the 50". That's the best price that I have seen thus far, plus no taxes and free shipping. I'm not sure how you would go about getting a warranty though, I don't think Vann's offers one.
