Front projection is like what they have at the movie theaters...you use a projector and place the image on a wall, projection screen, etc. These are portable.

Rear projection is similar but the projector is in the back and housed in a cabinet. Great picture and very cheap, but is a direct view...ie. you need to be sitting directly in front of it for the best viewing (as well as a dim lit room). Also, they are quite bulky. Mine is a 51incher and it weighs well over 200lbs.

      Hope this helps.

I am sure it has been asked before but I'll have to ask again. My HDTV's native resolution is 720p, does that mean I will get the BEST picture in 720p or will 1080i look better?

I am looking at the 42" Panasonic plasma or the 40" Sony Bravia. I'm leaning towards the plasma since it's 2" bigger and $200 cheaper. I just have one last question, is there a noticable difference between a 1024x768 (plasma) resolution or 1366x768 (bravia) resolution?

              Thanks

If you're going to use the tv for gaming you definitely want to go with the Sony set over the plasma.

1024x768 is 4:3 aspect ratio. When watching hd programs or playing hd games, you'll either lose or stretch part of the image to make it fit in 4:3 or you'll have to use it in a letterbox format with black bars at the top and bottom of your screen.

1366x768 is 16:9 aspect ratio, commonly known as widescreen. This should display 720p correctly. The resolution is too low for 1080i.

I'd go with a widescreen format since the games and broadcasts are now made for it.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

I just bought a 32" Sharp Aquos LCD for 999.99($200 off at Costco, orig. price was $1199.00) a month and a half ago. I just lucked out on getting a Panasonic TH-42PX60U without having to get up early or stand in line for $999.00 as well(read the details in the Black Friday thread in Non-Sports Gaming). My dilemma is this: Should I keep the Panasonic or keep the sharp?

One is 42", the other 32". However, the 32" is an LCD, and I heard the Plasmas are not meant for gaming AT ALL. I barely game now(I only have a gamecube I fire up about 3 times a month), but I do want to be able to get a PS3, 360, or Wii in the future and dont want to have to get another TV. The Sharp has a Clear QAM tuner and ATSC for HDTV, the Panasonic only an ATSC.

I do 75% of my viewing with standard Def cable(it comes included with my rent in my complex), 15% DVD, and 10% ATSC HDTV(basically sporting events and select shows).

The Panasonic only has 1024x768, whereas the Sharp has 1366x768. Would I really be missing all that much?

                        Both have 2 HDMI inputs.

The other thing is that, with the Sharp, Costco basically has a lifetime return policy in case anything with the set goes wrong. With the Panasonic set, I'm at the mercy of the manufacturer's warranty unless I purchase the extended BB service plan, which I'm not inclined to do.

Which one would you guys keep and why?
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

I thinks it's gonna come down to personal preference. Do prefer the deep blacks of the plasma or brightness of lcd? Can you live with 32inches or want 42? I've read that if you're sitting at a reasonable distance away from the 42inch the difference in resolution is minimal. My dad has the Panny hooked up to regular Direct TV and it looks good, not jaw dropping. I think that's pretty much the case for any large tv display. That may indeed change when he get the HD box installed next week. I guess I've been spoiled by sports in HD OTA this past year. The warranty or lack thereof after 1 yr. on the Panny, could be the deciding factor. I'm no plasma expert so I dunno what time frame you'll usually find a problem. The lifetime gaurantee is tough to beat.

Ok I don't know if this is the right thread, but my question somewhat deals with a HD TV, so hopefully the question fits here.

I just got a 360 and have it hooked up to my HDTV, everything works great but I was wondering if there is such a thing as a HD cable that also has a S-video hook-up.

The reason is that I want to play my 360 on my TV using the HD hook-up. But also be able to connect the S-video connector to my capture card on my comp, so I can take pics and movies for a dynasty I post. I am not really worried how good the pics look, ie if they just look like the game was not run on HD. I just want to be able to play in HD while taking the pics.

I did a search for a component HD S-video cable on-line and didn't find anything. So I was hoping if there was such a thing someone here might know about it.
