I'm a little confused by that. My television has a 720p light engine but it accepts both 720p and 1080i. When I'm watching a channel that says the program is coming through in 1080i is that what I'm seeing or am I really seeing 720p? If I hit the recall button on my remote to bring up the display it says it is 1080i.

Me too. That's why I was wondering. I think I would prefer 720p, especially since I watch a lot of sports and action movies.

Because it is 1080i...just downconverted to 720p.

My TV accepts 720p, but is native 1080i, when I watch a 720p program, and I hit display, it says 720p.

I haven't met many people who can actually tell the difference, the ones who claim they can, I would almost bet anything you could fool them if you did a real test.

Like a masked Coke/Pepsi/Safeway Select test, eh?

Well I can tell the difference between 480i and 480p just by motion. Likewise, I can differentiate 60 FPS vs something that is less than in 2 seconds, and I normally get extremely disappointed when games aren't in 60 FPS.

just because you can't see it, doesn't mean there isn't a difference. I can tell a big difference between 720 and 1080i on my TV, but it is native 1920 X 1080.

So when does my television not convert to 720p? When I'm watching something in 480i?

I have a 42 inch samsung dlp HLR426 model. and i was wondering if anyone knows what i should be displaying my high defition cable box in, i have it set to 720p but i have recently found out that it can output 1080i. Is 1080i better to use than 720p ? Should i switch to 1080i ?

display it in your TVs native resolution, whatever that is.

Like jpup said, use your TV's native resolution.

                            Most DLP's are 720p.

Many people think 1080i is better than 720p because it's a larger number, but that's not always the case. To be honest, I can't tell the difference between either on my DLP, but I leave it at 720p since that's the native resolution.

^^ yeah i tried to compare the difference side by side watching a HD broadcast of spiderman 2 and i cant say i can tell a difference. So ill just leave it at 720p seeing as it is my native resolution. Thanks guys,
