    Official OS Book Club

Thought this would be a good idea. What you've read, what you're reading, what you are looking forward to, favorite books, etc. etc.

I just picked up John Feinstein's new book "Last Dance." It's a behind the scenes deal of the 2005 Final Four. I've read a few of his other books and I'm a huge fan. I also picked up Stephen King's "Cell" I don't really know that much about it, but it sounded cool. I had a giftcard, so I had to buy something.

I don't really have time to read these, but I do usually read when I'm taking a, um, break in the bathroom. Once I start traveling for work, I'll have some down time as well. Anyways, thought this could be a good idea for a thread, maybe if popular enough, a sticky?

So what is everybody else checking out?

If I had the time for some pleasure reading, I would pick up "Cell" in a heartbeat. Sounds really cool. But alas school get the best of me.

Right now i'm in the middle of "The Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. Really funny book that my friend recommended and was deemed a classic i guess.

What had me interested was how the author wrote the book and commited suicied in the 70's and his mom found it in his room and had it published. and it has won the pulitzer prize and was going to be a movie starring Will Ferrell, but haven't heard any new news yet.

The book I recomend is for anyone that likes history and or random trivial information.

"An Underground Education" by Richard Zacks. Its by no means a difficult read, in fact it makes for a great "toilet reader" because most of the articles run between a few paragraphs to a page or two. But this book is chock full of interesting facts and sometimes gruesome tid-bits about the history of modern civilization.

I actually bought a copy of this book for my dad and another friend and they both enjoy it as well.

I'm slowly reading America's Game: The Epic Story of how Pro Football Captured a Nation by Michael MacCambridge It's a darn good book. It has really changed my view of NFL Comissioner Bert Bell, a man I once thought of as a dunce who happened to keep the NFL afloat in the 1950s.

Right now I'm reading Battle Royale by Koushan Takami.

It's about a group of high school students who, for a vaguely named reason, or put into a "game" where they allhav to kill each other in order to win in the game. It's actually pretty sad, though it's action packed and very emotional. I'm almost finished.

The next book Im reading is Life of Pi by Yann Martel

i got the name of the author wrong, its actually john kennedy tool, but the book is about this 40 somethin year old obese man name Ignatius O Riley who still lives with his mom. Its placed in Louisianna and NYC and because of certain events he is forced to get a job.

Ignatius is a real arrogant jerk who has a farting problem. He's lazy bumb but is intelligent. He thinks he's smarter than everyone and that everyone is against him if they dont' agree with him. So the story is pretty much living life trying to find a job that fits him in his own vision of how the world should be. Thats pretty much what i got from it so far.

Pretty funny and pretty much you can see Will Ferrell being the character....I compare it to an Angry Ron Burgundy.

I am re-reading "Unforgivable Blackness: The Jack Johnson Story", about the first black man to win the World Heavyweight Championship, and all the stuff he went through, just to get a shot at the title.... If you cats thought Muhammad Ali was a bad man, you ain't seen nothing... This dude was talking trash to white cats not even a generation removed from slavery!!! It was also a PBS documentary that came out last year, and in view of Black History month, I figured I would read it again... Fascinating stuff, I must say...

Currently reading: Mind Game: How the Boston Red Sox Got Smart, Won a World Series, and Created a New Blueprint for Winning

I have to be honest, I'm very disappointed. The book barely scratches the surface, offering nothing more than a recap. I love Baseball Prospectus but they really dumbed this book down to the extreme. The only interesting part so far was the argument that the closer by committee theory in 2003 should have and could work.

LOL.... I'll tell you, I was so taken with the PBS documentary that I started doing searches for more information on Jack Johnson... I started thinking after awhile, "Who the funk is this white dude that keeps coming up when I'm trying to find info on Jack Johnson?"

I'm also reading "Now I Can Die in Peace" by Bill Simmons, its his recap of everything leading up and through the Red Sox World Series victory. He basically took all of his old articles for espn.com and went through them and did commentary. Looking back, what he got right, wrong, etc. If you like his writing, pick this book up. It's hilarious.

ah, i thought this thread was actually trying to get a book club going. i'd dig if we had a book of the month type of deal or something around here. that would be cool to read stuff and discuss with all of you guys. i just finished jarhead and plan on seeing the movie soon. not sure what i'm reading next, i'll head to the bookstore this weekend.

Just finished Bill Simmons' Now I Can Die In Peace which I absolutely loved. I'm not much of a reader, but I love sports books and this book was able to keep my attention, which is rare. He shares old columns from like 1998 or so up until the Red Sox win the World Series and he provides footnotes to say how he predicted something right and stuff like that. Plus, he says some hilarious things in this book, if you like his Page 2 Column, you'll love this book.

I need to find another book to read for school, I was thinking of reading: One Day In September

                              Has anyone read it?
                              Blind to this impending fate

It's back breaks with every mile
But we all live in denial
