How about Hostage to the Devil by Malachi Martin. It's a book of 5 Catholic exorcisms and I guarantee it will scare the crap out of you if you're into psychological, supernatural scares. Also my other favorite book is Gods & Generals and the Killer Angels, both based on the Civil War. You know in school I thought the Civil War was kind of boring (although I still enjoyed it) but these two books really made it very very interesting. They should have these two books as examples of how to make history interesting...

I just picked up "Loser Goes First: My Thirty-Something Years of Dumb Luck and Minor Humiliation" by Dan Kennedy. It's freaking hilarious. The first chapter of the book is about Christmas morning when he was 10. He wanted a Black Les Paul Gibson guitar to join the "popular" middle school band. He, of course, gets a maroon pullover sweater with a khaki stripe. I've only read 2 chapters, but this is hilarious and I found it for $4 at a discount book warehouse. Highly recommend this if you like to laugh and/or you think you're life sucks and you need to read about somebody else's misfortunes to make you feel better.

A good author is Pat Conroy: The Great Santini and The Lords of Discipline are both very good reads.

Flyboys is also a good book about pilots in the Pacific during World War II.

Rape of Nanking is a troubling book to read. (historical account of the mass genocide of Chinese by the Japanese in Nanking. 300,000 people in six weeks. Very disturbing book.)

Also recommend Angels and Demons. Found it to be a better read than DaVinci Code.

For those that like Lord of the Rings type material, Try Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time series. Quite a few books, but pretty interesting reads.

Yes indeed, lots of them. I'm currently into submarine warfare of WW2. I have about 4 or 5 sub books waiting to be read after reading 4 already.

While the veracity may be disputed, Iron Coffins by Herbert Werner is a great read. Even if you aren't interested in U-boat warfare, this is an exciting story and gives you a good understanding of what it was like to fight the battle of the Atlantic on the German side. On the Pacific side of things, Red Scorpion by Peter Sasgen is just as exciting and provides some very good historical background to the patrols of a single US sub in the Pacific.

Previously to my sub interest, I read Touched With Fire by Eric Bergerud. It's about the land war in the south Pacific. An excellent book that really pointed out the harsh reality of jungle warfare during WW2.

Off the top of my head, another great WW2 book was Soldat. I can only remember the guy's last name, Knappe. It was a german soldier's memoirs from the mid 30's to the late 40's. I just remember the guy was everywhere during the war and even in Berlin at the end.

To round it off, you can't read about WW2 without reading Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose.

On another topic, George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series is simply the best (semi)fantasy series I have ever read. Every character can die and the line between good and evil can sometimes be very blurred. The story is very intriguing and is full of twists and turns.

I've also really enjoyed reading on and off the Aubrey/Maturin Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian. I'm on about book 10 of 20. Sometimes I can tear through 2 or 3 books, then go a year without reading the next, but I always go back to reading them.

Well, I'm about 100 pages from finishing Da Vinci Code. Little too late now. LOL This does explain some things mentioned about Langdon's time in Rome. I assumed that Angels & Demons had something to do with it. I'll pick that one up next time I'm at the bookstore.

I began reading House of Leaves by Danielewski, yesterday.

I advise anyone to pick it up.

At one point, I was so freaked out, I had to put my bookmark in, and close my book, and then close my eyes and go to sleep.

              Its a great read.

I was planning to get a book in Florida but it's nigh impossible to find it. My mother and sister are going to NYC and i'll tell them to go to Strand Books. If that place doesn't have it then i'll literally cry. (Well maybe not)

The book is: A DISTURBANCE OF FATE by Mitchell J. Freedman

It's a "what if" novel/historical documents type of book based on the premise that RFK lived and actually became president.

deception point is pretty good. I just finished the Cell by Stephen King. Pretty good book, suck *** ending. Now I'm started on 'Velocity' by Dean Koontz, seems like a great storyline.

Yeah, Deception point has been pretty good so far.

I read that a few weeks ago, and couldn't agree more. Thought it'd be a dumb book, but King was able to turn an over-used storyline into an intruiging book, minus the ending. Pretty sweet that only 7 pages in the world was already crazy.
