After being coined "Too Intelligent" for BET, Phonte finally will get his chance to shine on Black Entertainment Television.

Little Brother Finally Intelligent Enough For BET?
      October 1st, 2007 | Author: Andreas Hale

It's been the rumor that wouldn't go away. Critically acclaimed hip hop duo, Little Brother, was coined as "too intelligent" for BET. Many may recall the "Lovin It" video - from Little Brother's sophomore LP titled The Minstrel Show - was rumored to not fit their audience's demographic and was in turned called "too intelligent" to be aired on the network. It's an ugly rumor that the network hasn't been able to shake.

But now 1/2 of the group, Phonte, has been asked to participate in the BET Hip Hop Awards that take place in Atlanta on October 13th (and will air on the network October 17th). Phonte will be featured in the "ciphers" that take place during the award show. Last year, the "ciphers" featured Lupe Fiasco, Remy Ma, Saigon, Sway, Styles P and Rhymefest.

Steven Hill, Executive Vice President of Music & Talent, spoke on the Little Brother issue and Phonte's inclusion in the award show.

“BET wouldn’t play (their) video because their music was ‘too intelligent’? I’m not sure how all that confusion started,” he said via statement. “I was surprised when the accusation came up. The Little Brother CD was one of my personal favorites and Phonte’s flow is crazy. When it came time to put together ciphers for this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards, I personally requested that he be involved. We’re very glad that he accepted. And, of course, he ripped it.”

HipHopDX also spoke to Phonte about the situation.

"Although the history between BET and Little Brother has been very rocky and controversial, I'm still thankful for the opportunity to expose my name and my group to a bigger audience," he stated.
"I challenge BET to go even further outside the box and challenge their viewers with fresh, new faces that show hip-hop in all its varied forms. By highlighting artists such as myself, Stat Quo, Joell Ortiz, and Kardinall Offishall in this year's award ceremony, they're off to a good start.

When asked if fans of the group would feel like they "sold out", Phonte responded by saying "The people who would say that, I don't consider to be 'fans' at all honestly. What type of 'fan' wouldn't want to see an artist they like performing on a nationwide platform and being exposed to more viewers?"

"I can't give to those people and their myopic thinking (about us getting) any attention," he continued. "I know that Little Brother's true supporters will just be happy to see Phonte spittin on BET with a Getback t-shirt on. That's all I'm concerned about."

In the meantime, Little Brother's third album on ABB Records titled Getback will be released on October 23rd and features Lil Wayne, Hi-Tek, Mr. Porter, Illmind and Nottz.

          Artist: Styles P
          Album: Stereotypez
Producers: D Boyz; DJ Premier; DJ Shocca; Good Will; Ill Bill; Jake One; Jamey Jasta & Matty Trump; Marco Polo; MoSS; Pete Rock; Xplicit; Yomo; Young Cee
          Release Date: September 25, 2007

The beats on the album are a mix of good and bad but mostly bad. Boston trio Special Teamz isn't much to get excited about either. None of the emcees are exceptional, and although Edo G. is recognizable, his few word bars that heavily focus on phrasing get tiresome. Reason being that it's more apparent that his focus relies heavily on rhyming as many words as he can find in the rhyming dictionary. It sounds forced and although its "unique" in a way because it's different, in this case different sucks.

He's too inconsistent and whatever the rest of the group accomplishes gets overshadowed by his easily perceptable impulse to throw the words nine, grime, divine, and serpentine together even if it lacks any logic or sense(the rest of the group does both good and bad so no worries). However, these mofos DO go hard on "Story of My Life" which is undoubtedly a candidate for a few awards as 2007 begins to wind down.

Man I had a chance to go to a free Soul Position concert last year but I couldn't get there on time.

Del's 11th hour album was supposed to come out yesterday, according to wikipedia. I'm sure it's been delayed again, maybe indefinitely, but if anybody knows of any info about it, I'd appreciate it. I can't seem to find anything about it or when it might be coming out.

                        Artist: SoulStice
                        Album: Dead Letter Perfect
Producers: Analogic; Bring it Back; K-Salaam & Beatnick; M-Phazes; Oddisee; SBe Audiologist
                        Release Date: September 25, 2007

Chicago has been lights out with no blemishes whatsoever. From the mainstream (Kanye and Common) to the underground with our boy SoulStice from Wade Waters, Chi-town is the place to be to get around to some quality hip-hop especially beat wise. Analogic, Oddisee, and M-Phazes provide, and SoulStice delivers lyrically. Dead Letter Perfect closely resembles the last word of that very album title. Nearly all the tracks have great listening value, although none are particularly memorable save for the tracks "Still Love" and "The Time" ft. Stef.

More than anything, this album speaks for artists who've mastered the art flowing and how much of an imprint THAT can leave after we take a listen. I don't think SoulStice misses once, and it's a joy to witness. Easily a candidate for Album of the Year people. Probably not strong enough to win, but be sure that when SoulStice comes out with more ish, I will not hesitate a second to get it.

Awesome idea to include a link to "Song to DL," especially on an album like the Special Teamz album where "Story Of My Life" is fire and the rest of the album is pretty meh.

I listened a few times to Dead Letter Perfect, and it's pretty solid. All of the beats are pretty thematically similar, which means you never really have any misses, but save one or two songs, there are really no standout tracks.

Soulstice is pretty good fundamentally for me, but he doesn't quite bring enough heat for me to agree with your grade of an A. If I were to throw out a rating I'd probably reward it with a B on the basis on consistently good beats and good rapping, but not great in either catagory.

Soulstice got alot better since North By Northwest and I liked that album. Dead Letter Perfect is much better than his first album.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)
