Just wondering what song turned you guys into full-fledge underground hip-hop heads? (Trying to spark some kind of discussion that doesn't include the word Getback in it before I'm driven insane by the wait)...

the song that did it for me was "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Brand Nubian (produced by Chris "CL" Liggio)

I remember when this song was a hit on the radio... everytime it came on I was ecstatic. I loved the Jean Carne sample, and Grand Puba tore it up on his 16. The hook was catchy as hell, and it didn't take long for me to learn all the lyrics to the song. I took major interest in Brand Nubian solely from that song and invested in "Foundation", "One for All", "Everything is Everything", and "In God We Trust" in the following few weeks, and fell in love with Hip-hop.

It was The Listening. When I listen to my old cd's I can't believe the **** I used to listen to. Once I went to a few websites to download music I heard of some group out of Raleigh(where I was living at the time) that were supposed to have a good cd. I downloaded that and I was hooked.

I use to listen to Pac and Biggie, the good rap back in the day. I went away for a good 5 years or so when all I heard was hip pop. The song that drew me back in , was Atmosphers " woman with the tatooed hands". That song got me on atmosphere and then from there...

                Artist: Grayskul
                Mixtape: Bloody Radio
Producers: Aesop Rock; Old Dominion; Bean One
                Release Date: September 11, 2007

I was excited to divulge in this cd because of where it originated... Seattle, Washington. Now what makes Seattle so special was the nice little showing we got earlier this year from Blue Scholars, namely Sabzi in the album Bayani. Following that was a not great, but decent effort from Gabriel Teodros. Since Grayskul hails from Seattle, I was ready to hear some of that tight northwest flavor that I've been craving for months.

What I got was a more annoying and jumbled up sounding Geologic (emcee in Blue Scholars) over beats that reeked of Aesop Rock. Yes, there are good tracks on this album. Yes, there are equally the same number of bad songs on this album. I'd say don't get it. Some of the beats are entrancing, but you wouldn't be missing out on too much if you didn't get it, just because you wouldn't be wasting time listening. Some cool beats are ruined by poor hooks unfortunately.

Download the Song to Download though. It's nice.

throughout high school I listened to punk and ska music and towards my senior year, all my favorite groups were coming out with crap records. when I went to college, my roomate sophomore year introduced me Common's "Like Water for Chocolate", Deltron's "3030", the Root's "Things Fall Apart" and "Come Alive" and Blackalicious' "Blazing Arrow" and "Nia". The specific songs that got me hooked were 6th sense, Mastermind, A 2 G, Chemical Calisthenics, The Next Movement.

After Brand Nubian... I started collecting all the Common records immediately. I was hooked on hip-hop and had to build a database of it. I love "6th Sense". Common absolutely destroyed that one. Some of the most unforgettable lyrics ever written.

                      Re: fans of underground rap?

Before getting into underground hip-hop, I really didn't listen to much music at all. I was a Jay Z fan, but I mostly listened to talk radio. I didn't like much of anything I heard on the radio, so I quit listening to music for the most part. I did a favor for a guy on MaddenMania or something and copied the NCAA 2004 rosters for him. He sent me a bunch of burned CDs and said I should check them out. One of them was Atmosphere's "Seven Travels". I didn't even listen to it though; I gave it to my brother who said it was good. I heard "Trying to find a balance" and liked it, but didn't listen any further. Fast forward a couple years and I'm in Iraq and I see an Atmosphere song as my friends profile song on Myspace. I remembered the name, went to the page, downloaded a few songs, liked them and started exploring more. From Atmosphere I went to Murs, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock, Talib Kweli (who I had liked before but never really listened to much), P.O.S., Dilated Peoples, The Coup, and I keep finding new guys.

X Cell, think you could review Mac Lethal's 11:11?

I've found a ton of links to DL it but the rapidshare file required a password and I don't know what it is... and we all know how much rapidshare sucks considering you can only download one thing every 140 minutes...

Everyone should just use mediafire... it's the best... If you can find "11:11" for me... send it my way...

I'm also trying to get Sandpeople's "Honest Racket"... they've got Sean Price featured on their so it looks like he kicks it with good peoples.

My love for hip-hop started with Atmosphere my sophomore year in college I believe, about 3 years ago. I didn't get an album or anything but I downloaded a song by them called "Lovelife". The lyrics were unreal and I immediately got hooked. I stuck with Atmosphere for about a year until I branched out and took others in.

                            Next couple in line:
                            Black Milk
                            Basic Vocab
                            Zion I

I'm now hooked and listen to the radio about 1% of the time, only when company is present, mainly females.
