I'm glad someone else liked Lazenby! OHMSS is one of my favorite Bonds of all time (though the winner has to be From Russia With Love). I still have a problem getting over Telly Sevalas as Blofeld though (although he does a fine job in the film).“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Re: Casino Royale...the new Bond
I'm not a big bond fan anyway, but the last guy was great for the part.
I don't buy this new guy for a second. However, I'm sure in a few years the kids will all know him as the Bond.Comment

Originally posted by LetsGoPittI don't know. I also liked For Your Eyes Only, because it was more Connery-esque, with the "caper" being more espionage-related, and not the usual "madman wants to wipe out all of civilization" schemes that populated the Moore era. The Spy Who Loved Me was good, but it had way too many jokey moments that were overdone during that time. Plus, Stromberg was definitely one of the weaker villans of the series.

As for Telly Sevalas as Blofeld, I kept thinking he'd pull out a lollipop and say "who loves ya baby?"

Re: Casino Royale...the new Bond
I'm willing to give Craig a shot.
James Bond is a tricky franchise to sell in some ways.
While men tend to prefer the Connery, Dalton (man's man) type, the ladies seem to prefer the suave, handsome Moore (in the 70's, remember!), Brosnan type.
Craig seems to be more of the former, and that's okay with me... but my wife is pretty pissed off that Brosnan's gone.
I actually really like Judi Dench as "Q" - I think having a woman (especially one with a commanding screen presence like Dench) adds a new dynamic to the equation that I find interesting. Plus, it's a little enlightened, and in the world of Bond, that doesn't hurt. Her scene with Brosnan in Goldeneye where she calls him on the carpet for being a "Cold War relic" was quite charged for a Bond flick.
I think the real key to Bond is the story itself, though. Recently - and this is not Brosnan's fault - the plot has been too reliant on ridiculous gadgets, and that detracts from the overall enjoyment of the story. Of course, it's fun for Bond to have some gadgets - but having a car with a "cloaking device" stretches believability to impossible levels.
Second, the enemies have been lacking real menace. This doesn't mean Bond has to become darker or more violent, but in the classic movies, you had villains who seemed like they could actually defeat Bond if he made a mistake. Recently, in my opinion, the villains haven't been of that caliber, and that detracts from the excitement.
Of course, Bond will prevail, and we all know that - but James Bond doesn't waste his time with coke smugglers; his enemies are going to take over the world!
Clive Owen might have been the perfect successor to Brosnan (who I thought did an admirable job with some poorly-written screenplays), but he didn't want the job. C'est la vie.
Craig's a fine actor (watch Layer Cake or Munich if you're interested), and I think he'll bring a grittier, less superhuman portrayal to the proceedings.
However, it all boils down to the script. Connery was not Olivier, and Moore was not really a ham - they were simply actors doing what the story called for and the director insisted upon. If the script's there, then Craig will be well-received. If it's not - he'll take the fall for it.
It's not fair, but that's the way it is. I guess we'll see later this year.Last edited by sdrotar; 06-15-2006, 05:40 PM.Shawn Drotar

SPECTRE and Blofeld
Ok, they'd have to be re-jigged a bit to fit modern times but I always liked having some big, dark and evil band of villians that have crazy world conquest schemes. I think the reason why we haven't seen them is because the script writer for THUNDERBALL bought the rights to the characters and the rights have a 35 year expiration date (something like that but I know that's the case)
I'd love to see Ving Rhames as Blofeld. Hey, I know it's a different take on the character but would be kinda interesting all the same.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Wow....
Finally, a Bond film that mixes the grittiness of the Connery films with just the right amount of senseless violence and action!
Yep, i'm going to see this at the theatres.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Casino Royale...the new Bond
I have not seen any of the Bond films in full (a sin, I know), but I'm going to see this one. Partly because the theme song is by Chris Cornell, but also because the trailer looks great and I hope Craig does a good job.

Re: Casino Royale...the new Bond
Bump. The theme song, "You Know My Name," has apparently been sent out to radio stations and has been leaked.
It definitely has the feel of a James Bond theme song. Also, its the first official solo song by Chris Cornell since his first solo album, "Euphoria Morning."

Re: Casino Royale...the new Bond
Daniel Craig is not able to play Bond. He's the furthest thing from "suave" and he is built like a short tree stump. Granted i'm not a huge Bond fan that is in lines to see the new show but I won't be catching this until it hits Blockbuster online, and probably not even when it comes out. Craig will probably be a complete flop as Bond and be replaced.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20
