Is there anything specific I should catch up on before Secret Wars hits?

Not really. There was #0 this past weekend for free comic book day that gives you most of what you need to know. The cause of secret wars is a dense story in the avengers books over the last couple of years.

It appears to be dense but its really only about the melding of two worlds, the ultimate universe and the 616 universe. New Avengers #33 pretty much destroys every other universe but those two.

I'm just bitter, 'TIME IS RUNNING OUT!' Feels like its been running for like 4 years. I wouldn't ever suggest anyone go back and read all of that. Characters like the black swans, ex nihlo, Thanos' cabal... I strongly dislike the path to Secret Wars, hoping the actual even is much better.

This is exactly how I feel, the problem with the run up to Secret Wars is that it was contained in the main Avengers books with a very dense (i'm sorry, even though JBH3 distilled it to its simplest form it was still a damn chore to read. I think my problem and probably man others is that they thrust so many characters that aren't very well known, complicated and in the end boring into the story arc) story that was a long overblown and often complicated POS.

I took a look at the Daily Bugle thing about the titles and such that surround Secret Wars. There is definitely something for everyone in all this but I really hope they don't drop the ball the way DC did with their Convergence event.

I'm still really not sure what to think of this next Avengers lineup. You can be sure they won't be tackling things as 'deep' as incursions. As someone who's not a fan of the 'kid' books this already kinda feels like one. We'll see how the #1 goes and go from there.

I will be quick to drop Avengers if its tone is teenager driven and immature. I am not very enthusiastic about the MU post Secret Wars. Given the A-Force and new look Avengers team I think Marvel is trying to appeal to an audience that isn't really reading/buying their books.

I agree with you guys if the tone of the new Avengers and A Force books are immature/teenage driven then that's not going to be so hot. It kind of makes sense that they go for the younger reader considering the new Avengers movie coming out. There is always a chance of audience switch over from the people watching the movie to the comic books.

If this fails miserably though you'll be sure to see things mature quickly.

I really hope a business strategy of theirs is not to reboot a line in lieu of a feature film. If that becomes the trend I will just give up on new books.

Was never a fan of Ultron, that book didn't do anything to change my opinion.

Hey guys looking for some input. I'm about to start a month of Marvel Comics Unlimited because I have some downtime due to knee surgery (micro fracture) recovery. I really haven't read much in the last 15 years (work too much, family etc)or so after reading almost everything from mid 80's to 1994 ish.
I'd love to say I'm going to stick with and and start keeping up again but I doubt I will have enough time after I get back to work.

So with that back story do you guys have any "must Marvel reads" that i should dive into for the next month?

Planet Hulk and the World War Hulk. I think its my fave all time Marvel story.

Have they improved arc reading in MU? Always seemed amazing to me that you couldn't read stories by brining up a checklist and easily bouncing from issue to issue across different titles.
