    Re: Comic Book Fans....

    Disappointing to hear.

Meanwhile Marvel has me paying $30 for the awesome Adi Granov variant of Infinity Gauntlet, making me consider'collecting' again for the first time in a decade or more and interested in opening a pull box back up again once the universes stabilize. I'm actually excited about more than Injustice (which is starting to drag, in its weekly bite-sized portions IMO).

In sure I'll torrent some of the Convergence stuff and probably pick up some of the new #1s to see where they go from there, hopefully draw me in better than the event did.

Edit, the variant I picked up. Note the colorful left gauntlet on the Nova...

If they really wanted to do something with the multiverse and be a buffer between the next phase of the "New 52" than they could've used the month to do "Tales of the Multiverse" stand alone books and then jump right into the relaunch/new status quo for ongoing titles. I've long been singing the praises of DC (the last 2 or so years has been EXCELLENT) but with what they did to Batman (and the Trinity as a whole) with their new status quo well....DC has put itself on extremely shaky ground.

Marvel is now poised to be the superior brand from a creative standpoint linewide over DC for the first time in a while. it FEELS like they have a plan with Secret Wars and I trust the aftermath will lead to a much smoother transition than what DC has done.
Yes I read 5-8 of the main convergence books tonight and it was a horrible ending. It was just wrapped up too neatly and without any payoff. I don't really know what this book did for any continuity. The only thing that happened is Earth 2's Batman died and Diemos died. Despite a whole bunch of Earth 2 "Worlds End" books, their world did end but then Convergence #8 gives them a new world so what was the point for the Worlds End book???

Its apparent that Convergence was just a "filler" event to fill the 2 months DC needed to move their offices from NYC to LA.

So a little behind here but I just wanted to make a quick shout out to Bendis on his work with Old Man Logan. Bendis (rightly IMO) gets skewered by some for his rather annoying dialogue ticks but here he's set up a very good noirish mystery tale. It seems like it's part noir, part dashiel Hammett with a dash of Sergio Leone.

            Re: Comic Book Fans....

So... decent haul this week. Passed last week's biggest ever digital pickup of books... think it was 8 comics for $40 or so. Even grabbed 2 DC books.

What I've read, and non-spoiler impressions.

Secret Wars #3. Give this a solid B. Getting a bit Infinity-like in the exposition, but you don't need a physics degree or a 20+ issue backstory to really get it all. Story takes some meaningful steps forward.

Very disappointed that #4 slipped 2 weeks, and is taking ALL the tie-ins with it. Think they're still trying to figure out what's going to ship during those weeks, the guys at my shop weren't sure yet.

            X-tinction Agenda - C+
Like Inferno, lop out any mention of Barons and stuff and this could have been a fairly timeless 'What If...!?' story. Overall I liked it, premise was OK and it's nice to see some nostalgic characters from that time doing their thing again.

            Battleworld #2 - C-
Just not feeling this book. Might grab #3, but meh. Just don't really care about anything going on in it.

            Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows - A
My surprise favorite of the week, and I'm not even a big (non-Superior) Spidey fan. Like X-tinction Agenda it could have just been a 'What If...!?' story and published some time ago. Either way very much looking forward to #2.

            Armor Wars - C+
Thought the premise was OK... a world where everyone has to wear armor in order to live. Classic Iron Man arms race-style story with a cog thrown in to distrupt the usual rivalry.

Still to read: Future Imperfect. I have the digital version of this event but I have tried a couple of times and haven't been able to get through it. Going to give this book a shot.

Secret Wars books I did not pick up: The AvX Scottie Young babies book. Masters of Kung Fu. Whatever comes out of these I couldn't care less.

Non Secret Wars - Really liked All-New X-Men. Shield asks the team to go take a look at some mutant vagrants that have set up shop over on Utiopia.

The DC books I picked up... JLA and GL. I liked the Lantern book, interested in more. Not sure if anything led into it, interested in this gauntlet that Hal Jordan is wearing. Haven't read JLA yet, but the cover makes me want to go get a physical copy.

            ------

Here's the sliding schedule. Secret Wars #5 isn't out until August for crying out loud. Uncanny #600, the finale for the book and Bendis' swan song for the X-franchise is in the can but just delayed past Secret Wars so it has it's own time to shine.

Thanks for the reviews mestevo. Grrr at the shipping slipping though, one thing I can give DC props for is that with the current leadership they've had very little of those shipping snafus that Marvel can be riddled with that snarls things up for the fans.

Anywho, i'll be reading my DCs tomorrow then the Marvel on Friday.

                Re: Comic Book Fans....

As a guy who had been a DC guy for years, except for Spidey he has always been my main book, I have been picking up Secret Wars. I must say it is hands down a better story than Convergence. By far.

I have been telling my pull customers and loyal DC fans who have been very disappointed lately to give them a shot. So far the reviews have been very positive. The only book I missed that I wanted to read was Planet Hulk but we sold out and I gave my copy away to a customer. So I am hoping for re orders soon.

Besides Spider Man I have not read a Marvel book regularly in forever. They have done a Marvelous job of bringing the reader in and explaining what is going on. I have read all of Convergence and I still have no idea what actually happened.

As someone who started reading comics literally a few weeks after the start of the original Secret Wars series, I think this new Secret Wars is one of the best stories I've ever read. I'm traditionally a continuity stickler, but knowing that going forward the Big Two have decided to abandon a strong emphasis on tight continuity, I'm let it go and just enjoying the excellent storytelling.

Pfft, They used to do that back in the early silver age routinely. (mostly at the end of stories)

BTW the Bat-Mite issue was pretty fun to read. It had a hell bent Silver Age feel to it in a modernized way. You really have to be of a certain mind frame when reading it but it was quite good.

Action Comics was pretty good too as it sets up the new status quo while at the same adding some mystery as to what's going on.

Green Arrow was quite good as well and the art especially facially reminded me somewhat of the kind of art from real old comic strips like Prince valiant etc etc. Very realistic looking facing though at the same time the figure work made it look more like a still frame rather than something fluid.

Wonder Woman Annual was so-so. The alien species subplot was pretty much dispatched with too quickly but again, the strength of the Finchs' run was the dynamic of Wonder Woman with her duties to Themyscara (sp) and that was concluded quite nicely.

Justice League was intriguing and sets things in motion nicely for the Darkseid War. The narration of Scot Free and Wonder Woman in parts of it really drove home some of the themes that I think will play out a bit in this storyline. We have all the players on the board and there was a surprise in there (at least to me) which I won't reveal as it's a spoiler but needless to say this is going to be quite the event. Hopefully it'll make up for the bad taste that Convergence left readers with.

A friend of mine who is a dedicated Dc fan says that convergence was just a way of undoing the Nu52 to allow writers to go and write in whatever universe they want because they all "exist".

Well...That didn't last too long. DC is never gonna fully give up that concept. It's actually a pretty liberating and fun sandbox to play around in if writers do it properly.
