Re: Comic Book Fans....
I don't know if any of you all care about Archie but i've always had a soft spot for the characters and that brand. Mark Waid (boy, he seems to be the go-to guy to revive flagging properties) and Fiona Staples are doing the reboot of Archie. Can't really tell too much from the first story as it was truncated to make room for a reprint of Archie's first ever story BUT...I do like what he's trying to do. There's a bit of a Ferris Bueller vibe to some of it with Archie breaking the 4th wall but it's not overdone. The main characters are pretty much what you expect but updated. Reggie seems even more of a douche though from what little we saw of him.
The major change in this re-imagining is that Veronica is a newcomer to Riverdale. In fact, she wasn't seen at all in this first issue as we get the layout of what's going on in Archie's world.SpoilerHe and Betty have been sweethearts since they were 5 years old but now because of a "lipstick incident" they had a rather nasty breakup but it's clear they still care for each other.
It feels like one will have to read the first arc to really tell how this is going to go but signs point it to being a fairly good update. According to the back of the issue there'll be a rebooted Jughead title coming out in October as well.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Nah, not up my alley really. I know Archie as a franchise isn't flagging as MLJ/Archie has done a LOT to freshen up the brand what with the Married Life magazine that had a long run, the Afterlife with Archie book and the numerous other things. It seems to me that what Waid is doing is trying to put a more contemporary spin to the character and they're trying to create a new look but one that won't offend like that "new look" Archie thing did a few years ago.
The look Fiona Staples has gone for is a lot more naturalistic and retains enough of what you'd expect after 75 years.

I also ended up ordering Batman: Earth One, Court of Owls, City of Owls, and Fables Vol 1. I have the Court/City of Owls singles, but something about TPBs I just enjoy more. Still love all those Capullo covers, though.

Re: Comic Book Fans....
I read Earth One this weekend:
Spoiler
While Bruce/Batman remains largely unchanged I really love the re-imaging of the rest of the characters. Harvey Bullock and Gordon's first encounter reminded me of Batman Year One with Bullock being the unwavering, green-eared new kid on the block of Gotham.
I love, love this Alfred. I'm interesting to see how Bruce reconciles Alfred's "do everything it takes" motto with his own moral guidelines on guns and killings.
Penguin was also great - perfect role for him. I wish he could have been more fleshed out before he was taken out.

Re: Comic Book Fans....
The 2nd Batman Earth One book is almost as good as the 1st in a lot of ways. I won't tell you who the main villain in that one but it moves at a good pace. I agree with you about the characterization of Bullock in the Earth One universe. It's almost a flip side of the Bullock/Gordon relationship in the main universe books in that Bullock is the one that needs a little bit of encouragement and a morale boost while in the main universe material it's usually Bullock giving Gordon encouragement to go on in the face of Gotham corruption.
I also like that Bullock is more of a pretty boy rather than the disheveled, cynical guy that he's usually portrayed as.
SpoilerThe Riddler
Bullock's intro certainly through me for a loop and I literally laughed out loud. I've always enjoyed him as the rough edged, good cop and this is seems to be working towards that same characterization.
I also started re-reading the Court of Owls. Its so easy to get drawn into the artwork of those books.

Court of Owls is really good stuff as well. It adds a whole other dimension to the history of Gotham and how it impacts Batman. I just hate what's happened to the batbooks post convergence but i'm sure it'll right itself by the time BVS comes to theaters.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

It should be a fun crossover though and "fun" is something that's often missing in superhero comics these days.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
