No, which is probably a result of Penny's character not having been cast at that point.
However, notice that the rest of the picture is pretty much exactly the same. Desmond's the same - pose, shirt, everything - like he was Photoshopped onto both pictures. And the backdrop is the same too. Why go to all that trouble and then throw Penny in there with a different pose and a different shirt? The could have at least had the new actress put on a shirt of the same color, and given how meticulously planned everything else is on this show, there's no way that was an oversight.
It's like there's one Desmond, but he's holding pictures taken during two different experiences within the same life.Last edited by Skerik; 02-15-2007, 12:11 PM.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

I'm coming to a final conclusion that this episode made no freakin sense, and that they better explain it more understandably in the future.Listen to some of my covers:

Also....(expounding on someone else's thoughts from another forum)....
What if there are several ways for Desmond to go back in time and relive his memories. Like this time, he turned the key and was sent back to relive a certain period in his life. He ended up saving the bartender because he knew he was going to get whacked in the face with the cricket bat. But by doing so, he altered the course of time and was thrust back into the present day on the island.
Then suppose he watches Charlie die after being hit be lightning. Then he finds another way to go back in time, ends up reliving that period on the island, and saves Charlie by building the golf club tower. But by doing so, he's thrown back into present day, whenever that is.
Then he watches Charlie drown, soon after he saves him with the lightning rod. Then Desmond finds another way to go back, relives that period of his life, and knows to save Charlie by rescuing Claire. Notice last night, right before Desmond went running off to save Claire, there was a period of recognition where Desmond seemed to be saying to himself, "I've been here before - what am I supposed to do now?" The same look on his face when he was in the Pub and that familiar song came on the radio. Hurley (I think) notices Desmond acting weird and asks what's going on, only to watch him sprint off to save Claire (Charlie) when he realizes which moment he's reliving and what he's supposed to do.
We know there are more hatches - are there more keys? And could Desmond keep turning these keys at different points in his "real" life, only to go back and keep reliving periods of his past? I think even the Desmond we're seeing "live" on the show is reliving moments from his past. And that's how he knows the future.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Re: ***LOST Official Season 3 Discussion**** (Contains West Coast spoilers)
Interesting theory, Skerik. Though, I prefer to believe that Desmond isn't reliving moments, but instead is standing outside of time in some way.
As for the question on Penelope looking for Desmond, I could be wrong, but I'm thinking that this episode could make it more clear.
Someone asked how Penelope could know to look for an electromagnetic field and then it was suggested that Desmond told her about it. I think that's on the right course.
When we see the guys in the station it was after the Hatch blew up. I think I remember the writers saying something about how the station and Penelope weren't exactly a part of the same timeline as the explosion of the hatch. That doesn't mean they were in the future or past. It could mean it was a week later or something. But, I'm thinking they are trying to insinuate that when we saw the station and Penelope, we were witnessing a change in time created by Desmond.
It's clear that Desmond can not change the past. Similar to my theory on the show "Heroes" and Hiro's ablility to travel through time, you can change how something happens, but you can't change that it happens. Desmond gets hit in the head by the bat and still ends up on the island. There is a huge block of time missing. Desmond obviously ends up in a hospital to treat the head wound and perhaps Penelope visits him and that's when he starts talking about what happened to him. In essense, Desmond has changed time, but he just can't change that certain things have to happen - ie: ending up on the Island.
There is confirmation from the writers that we will get more insight on how exactly Desmond got a boat from Libby. That episode may answer more questions about Desmond's new timeline. Right now, we know that Desmond goes to the Island because he gets lost in a world race. Perhaps, he now has different reasons for ending up on the Island. And Penelope is looking for him because she knows to look for electromagnetic fields.
If you want to take it even deeper, perhaps Desmond knows he has to be proud of who he is and purposely goes on the race to end up on the Island, knowing he'll get lost. But, with the help of Penelope and her money, he's hoping she can find him and get him home. This could be his way of living his destiny, but also affecting how things happen. And in the end would make him a hero to her father for discovering this Island. But, that's my "out of this world" theory."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Ha, I'm hoping having her walk by him was done on purpose by the Others to get Jack all riled up.
It'll be their way of seeing for sure how much he cares about Juliette. Once they discover he does, she can use him."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Also on the boards around the soccer field were an Oceanic ad, an Apollo ad, an ad for Gannon Car Rentals, an ad for the diaper company that Charlie advertised on TV, and an ad for something called "Kronos" (aka: Chronos).Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
