Memo to the Studios: Ten Easy Ways to Improve High-Def Discs

            1. Stop ruining movie cover art with ugly banners and borders.
            2. No more promos for your format before the disc menus.
            3. All discs should have a setup menu before the movie.
            4. Enough already with the menu clicks and beeps.
            5. One last menu request: Simpler is better.
            6. Make adjustable subtitle positioning a standard feature.
            7. Always provide the movie's original sound mix.
            8. Include all of the bonus features found on the standard DVD.
            9. Don't advertise titles you have no current plans to release.
            10. Combo discs do not justify premium prices.

Amazon, Microsoft to Help Bring Indie Films to HD DVD

Amazon and Microsoft have announced that they are joining forces to subsidize the authoring of up to 1000 independent films to the HD DVD format.

The unique promotion, dubbed "The 1000 HD DVD Indies Project," will see Microsoft provide free HD DVD authoring services to qualifying independent filmmakers, which Amazon will then package and make available for sale on its website, with royalities flowing back to the filmmaker for each disc sold.

This new HD DVD program is the latest addition to Amazon's CustomFlix CD and DVD service, which produces and ships discs only as they are ordered, eliminating the need for costly inventory. Filmmakers can then set the sale price, and earn royalties for each disc sold.

While CustomFlix has also released select titles on Blu-ray in the past (including the 'Living Landscapes' series), this Micosoft-sponsored promotion is HD DVD specific, as are the accompanying promotional materials.

In quote from the press release announcing the program, Dana LoPiccolo-Giles, co-founder and managing director of CustomFlix had this to say about HD DVD: "From a technical standpoint, we found that the HD DVD format fits our business model perfectly."

Filmmakers interested in more information about the "1000 Indies" program can visit the CustomFlix website for complete details.

"To put it bluntly, Microsoft wants both Blu-ray and HD-DVD to fail..."

                    Rob Fahey 08:00 (BST) 29/06/2007

                    (excerpt)

HD-DVD has always been a peculiar beast - a technologically similar format to Blu-ray, but one whose curious alliance of business partners has raised eyebrows from the outset.

The most important backers that a movie disc format can have are, obviously enough, the movie studios. But thanks to stronger protection systems and, in no small part, to the fact that Sony owns many of Hollywood's biggest studios, Blu-ray has always been the preferred choice of those firms.

With only one studio (Universal) exclusively supporting the format, the most vocal supporter in Toshiba's corner has actually come in the slightly unlikely form.

Microsoft has been HD-DVD's champion; Microsoft, a company which doesn't own any movie content, which has repeatedly stated that it won't be releasing any game content on HD-DVD, which doesn't build any of the PCs that run its operating systems and therefore has very little say in which disc format becomes standard on desktop machines.

As such, for all its huffing and puffing, Microsoft's sole contribution to the HD-DVD ecosystem has been to launch an external drive for the Xbox 360 console. It's not a bad contribution, in some ways; it offers a very cheap entry point to HD-DVD for a fairly significant number of consumers, for a start.

However, Microsoft has been sending mixed messages even over this commitment to the standard; it has gone to great pains to point out that should Blu-ray win the standards war, Microsoft can always launch a Blu-ray external drive.

Even though such statements are usually followed up with a "clarification" stating that it doesn't plan to do any such thing right now, it's hardly the ringing endorsement Toshiba might have wanted from its best-known partner in this enterprise.

Some more details about the Starz Blu-Ray titles

As reported here some time ago, Starz Home Entertainment and their label Anchor Bay Entertainment will release the first season of Masters Of Horror on Blu-Ray Disc in September. We have been able to uncover some more details about the release that you will find interesting.
The release will consist of four BD-50 discs containing all the 15 season 1 episodes in 1080p high definition video. Currently plans are to provide uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio tracks with the release but that may change, depending on the storage availability on the final discs. The set will also contain some – though not all – of the bonus materials found on the individual DVD releases of the episodes.

In addition to “Masters Of Horror” we have heard mention of another number of Blu-Ray titles from Anchor Bay, scheduled for Halloween. Look out for announcements of John Carpenter’s Halloween, Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II and George A. Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead to be released on Blu-Ray some time in September or early October.
