Tartan to Launch US Blu-ray Support with 'Oldboy'

Indie distributor Tartan Video has announced it will exclusively support Blu-ray in the US, starting with its release of the Korean cult hit 'Oldboy' this October.

The company had already announced plans to support Blu-ray in the European market, where it will release three titles this fall. Now comes word that the controversial Korean cult hit 'Oldboy' will mark Tartan's entry into the domestic Blu-ray market when it hits stores on October 23.

"To go with Blu-ray was a no-brainer for Tartan," said founder Hamish McAlpine of his company's choice to eschew HD DVD. "Not only is the format superior [to HD DVD], but also the fact that seven out of eight studios have chosen to release their films on Blu-ray means that this so-called 'format war' is over before it has really begun."

Tartan's initial specs for 'Oldboy' include 1080p video utilizing AVC MPEG-4 compression, as well as DTS HD Lossless Master Audio and standard Dolby Digital audio.

The company has not yet revealed supplemental details nor pricing for 'Oldboy,' but we'll keep you posted.

We've added a new listing for 'Oldboy' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule, under October 23. Watch this space for final specs to be confirmed in the coming days.

Side note: Target will still sell HD-DVDs, but heavily promote blu-ray.

XBox 360 HD-DVD player price dropped to $179, and you get 5 free HD-DVD's.

Kinda hard to pass this up if you are thinking about getting into the HD movie "movement". If you went to Best Buy and bought your 5 HD DVDs at regular price, the movies almost pay for the actual HD DVD player.

Also, if this is going to be your first HD dvd experience, do NOT buy your discs at Best Buy, they are way too expensive.

Kinda hard to pass this up if you are thinking about getting into the HD movie "movement". If you went to Best Buy and bought your 5 HD DVDs at regular price, the movies almost pay for the actual HD DVD player.

Also, if this is going to be your first HD dvd experience, do NOT buy your discs at Best Buy, they are way too expensive.

I'd just rather have them put more HD movies on Live and bypass the need for the drive altogether. It would be easier for consumers to adopt instead of spending $179 for an addon drive, and it would also sell more 120 gig HDD's.

Well, 300 is going to be on XBL in HD on 8/14, that's very quick after release.

As far as the XBOX 360 HD DVD player goes, would you recommend that or would you go with a little more expensive HD DVD player? I have heard good things about the A 2 (I believe thats what its called) What are ya'lls thoughts on this? Thanks for any input!

that's great, and I'll watch it that way. Hope more big releases get the same treatment. I just don't feel the need for a addon drive when I see they could just as easily put many more HD movies on Live.

I have the 360 add one, had it since Xmas, watched tons of HD-DVD's on it. I personally love it. Quality is great.
