I rent in my Blockbuster store all the time. When I get the urge to watch a movie why would I want to wait three days or longer for it to be mailed, when I can drive down the road and get it tonight?

This really isn't the thread, and I can't comment on how BB online works, but if I order a movie from Netflix today, I'll have it tomorrow.

But I totally understand the urge to go get a movie when you want to get a movie.

Quick question, how is the HD-DVD for 360 and the PS3 for upconverting current DVDs?

Is either system better as a DVD player? I'm picking up a home theater system (without dvd player in it, the HTIB's without dvd are better I've seen), and will need a upconverting DVD player. I'm starting to wonder whether it's better to pick up the HD-DVD drive (or a PS3) if i'm going to have to purchase a upconverting DVD player anyways. I know it'd be more money, but in the long run it might make more sense.

Just wondering if it's something obvious I'm missing, and if using the 360 for DVD's is poor compared to a dedicated DVD player etc. Oh, I use VGA to connect my 360, and I would go HDMI if I got a PS3

I was hoping that Warner could slip the four 'Harry Potter' Blu-ray discs out by the release of the new movie, but it'll be for the HOME release, not the theatrical.

Outside of more studio support for Blu-Ray, aren't Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's basically the same thing?

What are the differences between the 2 Discs? I believe HD-DVD will be coming out/or is already out with 50 Gig Discs and both do 1080p.

They will both upconvert. Unless you have an affinity for BR, I'd go with the HD-DVD addon for the 360. That will upconvert as well over VGA (however not with component).

Not really.

From a technical standpoint, blu-ray has always been superior. Better transfer & bitrates for a/v, bigger disc capacity, etc.

Toshiba is working on triple-layer HD-DVDs, but other companies (moreso for data than movies) are working on multi-layered blu-ray discs, as well.

Currently, it's still 25GB/50GB blu-ray discs. 15GB/30GB HD-DVDs.

It can be argued that HD-DVD has some titles that better showcase its technology better than blu-ray. Or the sheer number of blu-ray titles makes the ratio of demo material to mediocre titles inherently bad.

Also, keep in mind that Warner Brothers' Total HD hybrid disc is around the corner..

I want my regular DVD's to look good, so I know I need upconverting, and a regular DVD player would cost me about 100ish for something decent...Got me thinking I should just upgrade to HD-DVD and then I'd be able to purchase/netflix those as well.

ahhh, cool...so I theoretically don't need to upgrade all that fast. Nice, I didn't realize. I was planning on doing a HTIB with a DVD, but those tend to be kinda crappy, and if I get my 360 sound going optical audio, then I'll have the best of what I can, outside of doing HD-DVD, which I can add on soon if I want.

Thanks guys, just trying to make heads or tails of everything, and I'd rather not break the bank all at once if I can avoid it.

Its a good buy and regular DVDs look great on this.

Yeah, i'm running through VGA, and when I get my HTIB i'll run the optical through there. I'll probably get the HD-DVD anyways, it's fairly inexpensive and a great way to get the ability to view the high def stuff (I'd rather not go PS3 right now, no need to kick out 600, it'd be overkill).

Thanks again, just trying to figure out what'll get my entertainment setup happy and good to go for a while. Upgrading down the line's always expected, but hate buying stuff I don't need.
