The reason why the Vampire didn't kill him @ the end was becasue he gave him back the girl. The reason why they went after Will Smith in the 1st place is because they never wanted to be CURED. They had come to terms with themselves about what had happen to them. So much that they would have rather lived as INFECTED than either die being an experiment for the CURE or be CURED @ all

That reasoning goes against all logic of why some of them got infected in the first place, and you cannot convince me that they wanted to get infected in the first place.

I recommend watching the "Alternate Edition", changes the perspective of the whole movie.

Having seen this film twice, once at the theater and once at home, I think the “Alternative Version” is what Warner should have gone with in the theatrical release. It is just a much more satisfying ending if you ask my opinion. Granted, neither ending match the other two films or even the book. Not only does the alternative version give you a better understanding as to why the “Dark Seekers” were after Neville, but it gives you a much more complete feeling at the end. I have posted my thoughts on my blog.

I checked out the Alternate Ending (I don't know if the Alt Edition changes more scenes). I like and dislike both endings...

I like about the original ending how Smith takes it for the team and sacrifices himself. He was able to get over his mistake and sacrifice himself to "save" everyone. What Ididn't like was that the infected had ceased to be human anymore and there didn't seem to be any point in a cure. How can you cure something that doesn't exist anymore? Also I didn't like how the girl and Ethan just rolled into the protected town and la-dee-da.

I liked the Alternate Endings final scene where they are on the road and you don't really know where they are headed. I also liked how the woman now was the voiceover, like its her story to tell now. I felt the infected showdown just didn't have the impact the original ending had. This could be partially because I found the CG infected to be almost cheesy and I didn't have that "OH MY GAWD!" feeling I assume I was supposed to when Neville let himself out of the glass door.

Finally, I think (wrap it up music playing...) had they combined the two elements of the ending you have a nice little wrap up. But even then, it had become another horror fest once the infected stormed the house. The filmmakers threw out the "less is more effect" that they used so well in the first 2/3 of the movie and said "Here is everything, isn't it awesome?" I didn't think so.

They obviously didn't want to get infected when they were human but getting infected and turning into whatever they are changed the way they think. They still have advanced brain functions but they don't want to get "cured". In their opinion, they aren't "sick"; they see Will Smith as someone trying to cure something like race, they want to stay the way they are.

KDRE, Robert Neville was not a "Legend" because he was the smartest man on earth and could cure the infected. Robert Neville was a "Legend" because he was the last human on earth. In the book that was not a good thing. At least not for him. The infected wanted him dead because he was an outcast. An animal. Someone who killed there kind for no apparent reason at all. In the book the infected couldn't reach Robert Neville as he sat up in his mansion like house. All they could do was stand outside and holler his name. That is what makes the book and alternate ending so much better than the theatrical cut. Robert Neville was the monster/killer, not the infected.

joe, what I meant was and I did say some... the people who got infected first were the one's looking for a cure for cancer.

In your alternate ending writeup you said they didnt want to be cured. So they wanted to be cured of cancer but just accepted being zombies instead and wanted no cure for that? That makes no sense. They were willing to be experimented on for a cure for cancer but not for a zombie infection.

This movie made no sense in the end and it was a disappointment in the end.

I get what you're saying about the book, but the movie crapped all over it, especially with the fact that there was a woman and a boy, and an entire colony of people just sitting out there.

The infection, in a similar way, led the infected to believe that Neville was the monster for trying to cure something they didn't feel needed curing. When they were humans, they would've seen it the same way as Neville, but it's about a change of perspective.

I dont know what you're talking about but it all started when the doctor lady who claimed she had a cure for cancer injected whatever it was into people and that was how the mutations started.

You seem to have grasped the concept here. They wanted to be cured of cancer because they viewed it as a disease. That's fairly simple to understand. They didn't know that it could possibly lead to a mutation of the virus. They also didn't want to turn into zombies by getting infected when they were human. But you have to recognize that the infection changed them into something else. We find out in the alternate ending that they clearly did have some form of advanced brain function, seeing that the alpha male held feelings for another. However, that doesn't show that they think exactly the way humans do. They have accepted the change from human to darkseeker as something they did not view as being a disease.
