They can't afford to pay the teachers as much as private school systems, thus they get crappy teachers.

We seem to be making some sense now.

You get what you pay for. It's that simple.

You can pretty much apply that same prinicple to almost everything in life.

Yeah, you get some of the worst healthcare in the world and pay the most for it.

Anyway, like any political issue, you can't change the minds of people on an internet message board, so I'm opting out. People have chosen to ignore things they can't address. I would suggest everyone at least watch the movie Sicko, regardless of your opinion of Michael Moore and your opinion of health care. If you still feel the same way, great. Then, hopefully, the current system works for you throughout the course of life. But at least watch it and then see if you still think we don't deserve something better. Our system is a joke to a lot of other countries and it's sad because there are some things this county does so well. Taking care of its people isn't one of them, sadly.

I actually get pretty good healthcare. I'm healthy, and that's what I care about.

That happens if you allow both systems to continue. But if you only have one government run medical insurance company and not a competing private system for the wealthy, how would you get crappy doctors when all of the same doctors would be under one umbrella? I understand the idea behind having financial incentives to promote excellence but there is a ton of money being wasted in the US system. Too bad you couldn't see how it works (good and bad) in another country.

I guess people's opinions aren't likely to change much on this subject. Much of that is centered around whether you believe medical attention is a human right or simply a commodity to be bought and sold. That's the fundamental argument imo.

Why should money out of my pocket contribute to the health care of others?

I won't make an argument against the quality of U.S. health care. For those that can afford a top notch plan, I would argue that its fantastic. I've seen it personally. If you have the money, I don't think anything will top it. However, if you don't have the money, its terrible.

I can see it now, the second we get universal healthcare, every bum in america claiming they need their medical marijuania for their various health problems.

Because not everything in the world should be about yourself. Helping your fellow man is clearly a priniciple you don't agree with.

I cannot people some people here are defending the fact that you have to pay so much for health care, and the system is failing so many Americans. Some of the best doctors in the world are in countries where it is free, so this notion that somehow universal or more affordable coverage creates an environment of crappy doctors is absolutely ridiculous.

No matter how you feel or do not feel about "socalized medicine" at the very least you should all be able to agree that the system is costing far too much money, for far too little result at the current moment and one way or another, it needs serious revamping IMO.

Australia is an interesting model. It has both public and private coverage for tis citizens and was third in the world. That country also has some of the top thyroid, cancer, rehabilitation specialist, so there are great doctors out there with a different kind of system.

1 - unfounded and simply untrue.

2 - so best doctors = higher ranking? And I guess since we have the best basketball players, we should never lose an international game.... EVER.
There's just too many factors and this is too simplistic of a correlation that you're making. Like what? Like what about those in this country who refuse to seek out proper medical care until it's too late. Care should be measured, in part, by those who seek out/receive the treatment, not simply by the disease/mortality rates.
