Just curious, but would you guys count Gnarls Barkley as soul/R&B?

True, but it was more subtle back in the day. I heard a "love" song the other day talking about hittin' it from the back.

It wasn't more subtle. It may have been less LEWD but definitely not subtle. Come on now. "Turn Off The Lights"?

I haven't heard her new album. Her first was and still is one of my favorite R&B albums of all times. Since then I haven't really been feeling her. Someone said the same about Jill Scott and I think it's the same feeling. They're both OBVIOUSLY very talented and I love all of their songs, just not like I loved those first albums. I decided not to get this one but since I'm hearing so many good things I may go ahead and pick it up.

BTW, R&B is just like any other music out there. If your only taste of it is on the radio or videos then most of what you're going to get is crap. Gotta dig a little deeper. It does seem a little easier to hear one good song by a new artist and get a feel for whether or not it's one of a few hits they may have or if they really can blow. With other styles of music that's a little harder but there's still a lot of garbage in the mainstream.

Van Hunt is the man. He's my favorite current generation Neo Soul/R&B artist. I would recommend anyone who likes R&B to get both of his albums, his self-titled debut and On the Jungle Floor.

And don't sleep on Rahsaan Patterson. He's been putting in work for over a decade and brings out nothing but quality albums, and his latest Wines & Spirits is yet another one.

I wasn't sayin R&B of old wasn't about sex, they just didn't come out and say "I Wanna **** You" or some **** like that. It had a certain style to it, its hard to explain.

That's the same with any genre though. The quality artists were more creative with their message. Back in the day it was a lot harder to get your work out so most of the crap never even reached us, the public. Now there is a lot more music out there but I think the amount of quality is still there, just not as easy to find. It's not just about the music anymore.

Wow the first to mention J. Holiday

For some reason I love the song Back of my Lac

It makes me want to just chill

The album on a whole is really good.

I agree about the subtlety of "yesterdays" R&B and soul records I can't really get into the newer mainstream too often. Like someone mentioned its no longer "taboo" to go there and IMHO love songs should create a picture that you can interpret for yourself leaving it up to imagination. Maybe I'm old school but I don't think being lewd is a solid practice. I like singing some old school lyrics in a girls ear real nice like. She'd prolly smack me if I told her to bend over and make her booty talk....hahaha
