Lol, sorry. I think Ashanti is one of the least talented females in the industry right now. She sings like crap, has no charisma and I just don't get her appeal.

Oh, I'm right with you. I never got her hype ever, but her latest album isn't that bad at all actually. A lot of that has more to do with production but it's definitely a solid album.

Any Groove Theory/Amel Larrieux fans? Groove Theory's album was really good. I almost got a chance to see and meet Larrieux live at a listening party in Detroit, around 99' or so. Had to turn it down at the last minute. I really like her as an artist.

Goapele really reminds me of Larrieux. Whenever I think of one, I think of the other.

Also one more dude who's style I like is Raul Midon. I love the way he plays guitar and his State of Mind album was nice. Dude is crazy talented.

I like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Wilson Pickett, and Booker T. and the MG's to name a few.

I don't listen to modern R&B other than Ginuwine and Alicia Keys.

Man this is my kinda thread. There are alot of great past and present R&B artists. I just thought I throw a few more names around that I didn't see listed.

For You Old Timers: 38+years old

                    Chaka Kahn
                    Phyllis Hyman
                    Jean Carne
El Debarge (I Call Your Name)
                    Jeffery Osbourne
                    Mother's Finest (Love Changes)
The Whispers (Olivia "lost and turned out") one of the greatest songs ever made.
                    Teena Marie
                    Atlantic Star
                    High Energy
                    Nancy Wilson
                    Lou Rawls (Lady Love)
                    Earth, Wind & Fire
                    Luther Vandross
                    O'Jay's

                    Within the last 10 years:

                    Will Downing
                    Eric Benet
                    Silk (Lose Control)
                    Kindred The Family
                    Ledaci
                    Angie Stone

This kind of music will live on forever as far as i'm concerned. Great thread.

Syl Johnson is the man. Hah, you can actually just go to http://www.the-breaks.com and look up RZA... almost everything he samples is gold.

I love Ann Peebles also. Great voice. And Donny Hathaway is my favorite all-time in terms of R&B/Soul -- the live album is the greatest.

Al Green's voice is still amazing and it's a really solid album. I thought he had lost a bit of his voice due to a TV appearance I saw, but it sounds perfect in the studio.

Probably because in the studio you can wipe out bad takes and overdub things. What's the album called? I'd like to get my hands on it.
