I didn't feel Rakim's album at all. Lyricism is only one part of the package, and the production and features were weak. I think its his worst solo album, which isn't saying much. You have a bunch of joints with Dre but you put that stuff in the vault and come out with the stuff thats on the Seventh Seal? Yikes.

I agree. Seventh seal was weak. I did thoroughly enjoy the 2 songs he put out beforehand (the one with maino and holy are you). Besides those, I thought the album was very disappointing on all fronts.

As corny as some of the 80's hip hop sound it made sense. this stuff out here now some of it is just someone speaking words over a half a$$ beat . there is no real imagination or rhyme or reason. Hip hop was about telling a story whether true or false. Even some of good rappers Jay Z , Eminem to name a few have been putting out crap. American Gangster was a great cd , but BP3 stunk to high heaven if it wasn't for Alisha Keys that cd wouldn't get any play. Eminem has put anything out there any good since MMLP he has alot of mixtape stuff that is good , but big time production for the both of them stink.

just my opinion from an old school listner to hip hop take or leave it.
I don't think that's entirely accurate. Originally, hip-hop was about enticing a crowd, having fun, etc. So in that case, a MC like Gucci Mane is closer to "pure" hip hop than most rappers. Of course, it's involved and that's great....but let's not put all rappers in a box.

As far as Gucci Mane's lyricism goes...again, many don't know or care to understand him. Many don't know what "birds" or "chicken talk" is and that's fine. I really don't care for that kind of subject matter either....but I don't let that deny the fact that he is a pretty talented artist. He has character and can make good songs.
"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."

I believe the two together does make hiphop but when you have one and not the other its half a$$ed

I don't want to seem like I'm an know it all about hip hop but I grew up during it. I lived during the music the music fit its time. Most of the artist now I can point to someone back n day who started. gucci man and the whole south is a result of 2 live crew and uncle luke. there is alot of guys who are unique and would be hard to place but there success shows it. I can't listen to music nowadays cause I'm stuck in my ways and what I hear isn't appealing . I'm not saying he isn't but my view of hip hop / rap isn't what i knew growing up.

Groups like Wu Tang, Leaders of the New School, Tribe called quest, Fat Boys, Boogie down productions(more like a group of artist ) Das Efx , Nice N smooth u can't recreate that nowadays guys just are lyrically there to stay together be as one they want to be the one. that was music to me , but

hopefully this downturn in the economy will make artist strive to make better music we all can enjoy

That stuff is out there, you as the listener have to go find it now. No one is pushing it, that is the difference.

Having fun and having talent don't have to be exclusive though - there are plenty of rappers that can have fun and don't absolutely suck.

True, but they don't deserve to be paid millions of dollars for not being able to do both (not that artists should be paid millions of dollars anyways.

Look at Lupe, Talib, Kanye even, they do both.

I was going thru some of my albums and I decided to try and find some of the most disturbing verses I had ever heard. I eventually settled on Bizarre's "confession" verse on I Need a Friend or King Gordy's "sinner" verse on Horns. Which verse is more disturbing to you?

                      I Need a Friend:

                      Horns:

                      <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OVb33d4Ew_s&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OVb33d4Ew_s&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Or do you have another one to throw out, that can put these two to shame?

I just listened to the first verse of the Bizarre track and just turned it off. That could be the worst I've ever heard also. What an idiot.

Lol the only reason why I can even bear to listen to it is because of the D12 albums he just grew on me somehow. You have to go through a whole desensitization process just to be able to stomach him.

I actually remember liking Devil's Night, I think that was the name of their album. But Bizarre is frustrating to listen to. He's pretty much talentless in my opinion.

I'm feelin' the Em accent on the Refill.

And I know I'm late on Wiz, but the song Goodbye is on repeat.

Just picked up some new Wayne...this rock ish is killin' me. I wish he'd go back to the Carter II formula, but it looks like that won't happen anytime soon.
