Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Funkmaster Flex did an interview once where he said he and other DJ's would get records to spin in the club with payola. Trying to get the records played more in the club and later when it gets enough steam on the radio. Not saying that every track you hear on the radio is the result of that, but it happens sometimes.
Personally i don't like anything played on the radio at all and haven't listened in over ten years. Perhaps when i get my Zune HD with the HD radio i'll listen in to some of the specific stations.HELLO BROOKYLN.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
How do you explain a kid that puts out a song on youtube with no promotion/hype, etc. and it becomes the biggest song in the nation?
People want what they want....couple that with businesses that hates to take chances and you get the radio.
I just think it's unfair to label the majority of mainstream artist garbage."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

The radio/music industry is a business. The most fundamental rule of business is supply and demand. Now I want deny that labels push certain artists/styles onto the masses. But if there is a demand for something, than the radio is going to supply it.

Its the a bell curve thing, the blandest most juvenile stuff will always sell the most......People who are experts (Spend over 10,000 hours with a given activity) tend to be bored by the norm.
Music sucks, because the consumer sucks. I would love to see a study on what demographic pays the most for music(Itunes, ringtones).
I would guess that must current music purchases lean towards teenagers. Even if the parents are paying for them. Music is aimed at the lowest common denominator.
As Jmood said thank god for Itunes, I love the amazing talent in the underground scene. I take alot of pride in the fact alot of the acts are so relevent and not popular."Good music transcends all physical limits, it's more then something you hear, it's something that you feel, when the author, experience, and passion is real" - Murs (And this is for)Comment

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread
Sorry, I don't buy this....at all.
How do you explain someone like Gucci Mane? The guy was NEVER mainstream...in fact the furthest thing from it. He simply made enjoyable music that built a huge following in the south and eventually across the nation. It got to a point where the MTV/BET, mainstream artists, and the radio HAD to take notice. Now he is on songs with Usher and Mariah Carey. The notion that a rapper like Gucci Mane was spoonfed is the farthest thing from the truth.
There is a lot of ignorance about hip hop on this forum so that's why I normally don't argue this. But some opinions are so out there that I just have to chime in.SAN ANTONIO SPURSComment

This brings me to my favorite quote of all-time.

Chamillionaire's Major Pain mixtape is heat. Definitely worth a pick up. "Shadows" by Styles P has one of the hardest beats I have ever heard and he goes in. Lupe murders it as usual in the song, "Resurrection", a tribute to Haiti of sorts.Rice Owls - Houston Astros/Dynamo/Rockets/Texans - Arsenal - PSGComment

Lloyd Banks ft Juelz Santana - Beamer, Benz or Bentley - My favorite rap song of 2010 so far. Great beat, great flow, nice lyrics and catchy hook.
