Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Madvillainy was the only album of his I’d heard before this run, and I hadn’t even heard that until I got to college. I don’t think I had any idea who MF DOOM was until Reddit started talking about Madvillainy like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I was surprised that I liked Food over Madvillainy. They’re both pretty much perfect but the run from Kon Karne to Vomitspit on Food is just nuts. A lot of rankings I see have Vaudeville Villain really high. For me, it’s hard to judge the album as a whole vs the music in it, like I almost put Venomous Villain over it just because of Dope Skill and Doper Skiller but Vaudeville is definitely more cohesive. I think Take Me To Your Leader and Vaudeville are probably albums where the sum is worth more than the parts, but I don’t really listen in that way.

That same stretch on MM..Food hits hard for me, too. On the flipside - some days the whole tracklist of Madvillainy hits that way.

The best part about Griselda is they put out so much I don’t have to suffer through whatever scrubs they feature with, they just put out a soundtrack to their new movie.
Going through Dipset’s discography next, this first Cam album is...very of the times.

The volume of content is very much a plus of listening to Griselda. It’s wild I can go back to like a Conway mixtape from ‘16 and it’s just as hard as his current stuff. Being a 41 year old and coming up during a different time in hip hop, Griselda music was soooooo refreshing when I first heard it.

                  Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Finished Come Home With Me, it's interesting to read the backstory behind Cam'ron's career because listening to Confessions of Fire it definitely wasn't the Cam that I know and you could tell he was trying to fit into the dusty 90's aesthetic, funny people complain about music sounding the same now when I would argue there was a similar problem in the 90's but worse. SDE was better, but Come Home with Me is the Cam I know. Oh Boy, Welcome to New York City, and Hey Ma as your lead singles is pretty wild. Losing weight 2 and the title track are dope too, Juelz was killing these verses too. I dunno if it's a classic or not, but I hope the legacy of this album is as high as I think it should be, shout out to 11 year old me with the American flag bandana.

Also, looks like Stones Throw is going to release what they have of Madvillainy 2. We'll see how that goes.

Court docs coming out detailing the allegations of domestic violence of Dr Dre against his wife. This has been the story with him as long as I can remember so I don’t even know what to say at this point.

Thought the worst part of the Fred Hampton movie would be that they based the movie around a snitch but they let a billionaire on the soundtrack and Rocky’s song on there is called “Rich ***** Problems”, my people my people!

Another slow start to the year. Best thing so far is getting a JID Conway song and the way Conway comes in...”Stash boxes for the straps in the Navigator, Don C alligators, a lot of rappers they just imaginative exaggerators”.

Ransom with an early verse of the year contender, whole project is awesome, might be my favorite Big Ghost Conway tape so far, I love the beats on J Batters and Red Beams.

                                Damn man, this one hurts.

For the OG's on here, y'all probably knew me as Ruff Ryder up until a couple years ago largely because of my fandom of DMX and the Ruff Ryders.

It's really a miracle that DMX lived to 50 given how difficult his life was starting at a very early age growing up in the hood in an abusive, neglectful household and being in the system since he was 7. He talks a bit about his exposure to crack in this video below and you can see how much it torments him, but he does kick some real **** about learning to open up and talk about it.

Take care of your mentals fellas.
