Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

This Wale album is not for the backpackers and that's not a knock on them. It's just the reality of it and how it is when you have a rapper come from nowhere and then blow up.

In other words, the same stuff you were saying before you got hot, you can't continue to rap about when you do get hot. It that right? No but as we know, money does the most talking and rapping about "Hanging Pictures on my Wall" will not make you as much money as rapping about "I got 100 bad bitches in the club staring at me" will. Sucks but it is what it is at this point. Watch J. Cole because he'll be on this same path as well eventually.

Now that being said, my review of Ambition(not going to type out a full out essay like that reviewer did):

    -The Good:
    -Don't Hold Your Applause
    -Double M Genius
    -Sabotage
    -Coolin
    -Lotus Flower Bomb

The Meh(Songs that were either just ok, I didn't really care about or grab my attention like that):
    -Miami Nights
    -No Days Off
    -Ambition
-Chain Music(already heard on 11-1-11 but the beat saves this from being on my Ugly list)
    -Bait

The Ugly(Songs that either had no business being on the album or didn't meet my expectation or that I couldn't stand, period):
-Focused-The Chorus...my god the Chorus is awful and if the song is going to be bad then at least make the chorus decent aka the DJ Khaled route
-DC or Nothing-thought this would be what Double M Genius is or at least what "Mama Told Me" was on Attention: Deficit. Didn't really have that "DC" Feel to it, despite it being called...DC or Nothing LOL.
-That Way-This was on Selfmade and Eleven One Eleven. WTF are you putting this on ANOTHER album? Should've had either Bad Girls Club(since you were pubbing this as a single off the album earlier in the summer)or Best Night Ever.
-Illest **** Alive: Blah....just blah. Should've left that off the album.

All in all, it's an OK album but if you're expecting this to be like Eleven One Eleven or even Attention: Deficit, then you're probably not going to really be a fan of this album outside of maybe 2-3 songs MAX. If I had to rank this out of all the mixtapes and albums, it'd be around the 7-10 range but that's moreso because his other stuff is THAT much better than this is.

A boat load of new tapes today. I've been patiently waiting for LiveLoveA$AP to drop so I hope it lives up to its hype. Really feeling "Peso". Looking forward to hearing Freddie Gibbs, LEP Bogus Boys and the new Fat Joe.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Personally, I love Drake's music. Not in like a "OMFGZZ this guy is the best rapper ever kind of way" but the guy just has a way of nailing the feel of a song. I still bump So Far Gone everyday to this day.

I had the pleasure of actually meeting him a few times while I was living in New York through a mutual friend, and got to sit in on a couple sessions and chill out with him. He actually is a real down to earth guy which really surprised me.

With that said, Drake, STOP PUTTING LIL' WAYNE ON SONGS! Wayne has like one voice, and can't rap any other way, to me it totally just ruins the vibe for me. If anyone has heard The Real Her with Wayne, he just sounds out of place, and frankly, terrible.

Same with Rick Ross, but that's for another topic. I enjoy both Ross and Wayne in doses, but they are very one dimensional IMO.

Also, while on the subject of Wale. I have Ambition, but haven't had time to give it a proper listen. I've been a Wale fan for a long time. Before his Mixtape About Nothing mixtape series, before 100 Miles and Running, before Nike Boots, all that. When he went to MMG, and I heard his first couple songs with them, I felt like he sold out. I felt like I was duped. I had grown to love an artist and his style only to see it dumbed down and made ignorant when he joined MMG. Personally, I really enjoyed Attention: Deficit and I know that it didn't sell well and that the Roc Nation scene wasn't for him. I understand he is in a different place in his career, and it made sense for him as an artist, but I feel like he got away from what he was. The Go-Go/Backpack style was Wale, like when I thought Wale, that's immediately what I thought of. They were synonymous. Maybe it just takes an adjustment by me as a listener, but I was down on Wale for a while.

I'm going to go into my listening of Ambition with an open mind, I hope he doesn't disappoint.

I think you nailed it. Especially speaking about Wayne and Ross.

Drizzy fits his niche so perfectly.

Last time I checked, he's still managed by RocNation. It was Interscope who he fell out with (hell, I would too if you only ship 8000 copies to my hometown)

Maybe it just takes an adjustment by me as a listener, but I was down on Wale for a while.

I'm going to go into my listening of Ambition with an open mind, I hope he doesn't disappoint.
If you have a rapper that you enjoy listening to, if I were you I would hope for them to NOT blow up(as crazy as it sounds)because if they do, then this is what's going to happen. $$$$ talks and because rapping about Bad Bitches sells more than rapping about how you didn't have a pot to piss in growing up. Sucks but unfortunately that's the nature of the game nowadays.

Man, Biggie mastered the art of blowing up and still being ill.

He blew up, made Diddy club songs and still dropped a classic double LP.

I don't think anyone has done it quite like Big, but I maintain had his life not ended prematurely his career would have mirrored Jay-Z's (who is garbage now).
