Anyone open minded enough is going to check out different forms of music anyway, why should that be the responsibility of a rapper?

So basically you just wish life was more fair and more people thought like you did. Well that's sweet. Oh if only everyone was more like you. Somebody help us.

How are you guys confused on shallow

Shallow:money, bitches, cars, partying, club life.

Which is fine but it is overwhelmingly the vast majority. People in a younger age group aspire to it, they think that is all life is about, being cool and **** like that. That's why they need to be guided into a better direction, where the value of your life isn't determined by how many girls you ****ed or dollars you made.

And Trobinson I get what your saying and I somewhat concur, but the balance isn't there, and that is what the problem is. There should be an equal amount of conscious rappers and party rappers and smoke weed rappers etc.

And Drake's alot less shallow then some of you closeminded people seem to think.

As opposed to rappers talking about gangs, shooting people, getting shot, etc?

I hate mainstream rap more than anything but you act like this is a new phenomenon. How often has rap today or in the past given young people something to aspire too?

That's the problem, and that goes along with the balance. Where are the kids who want to help african's cause Lupe does it or support charities because J. Cole does it. I'm not acting like it's a new thing, this should've been addressed since day one, Tupac had the right idea by having a BALANCE to his music.

I would much rather have kids party then kill, but over both I would rather have kids have the choice(I use that word loosely) to choose who their role models are in the rap game.

They do have a choice. How don't they have a choice?

                  I said that loosely.

I meant that with the way that marketing is done and the way that these people look for music, the only options they have (before going underground, which many people don't know about or care looking for) are what's mainstream.

Alot of it I think is a way of being accepted, like "o everyone is listening to this song, so it's good. And it's number one on iTunes so it must be really good." The way the music game works, if I worked at iTunes and said on iTunes that Lupe was the number one selling artist on iTunes, his sales would go up exponentially. People buy the music that the record companies shove down their throat, and the people are starving. They take what's easiest to eat.

                    .
The majority is stupid = the music sold to them is created for their demographics.

Great Music will never be popular. Average people don't want to think about reality.

I disagree, the rennaisance is proof of that. There are times in our history where knowledge and just overall awesomeness was truly accepted everywhere. People are capable, they just arn't guided there.

meh, im way tired of the hip hop is dead debate. FWIW though a few years ago I was on the "dead" side, or at least living underground. Now the blogs have blown up, I haven't listened to the radio in years, so I'm not even in touch with whats going on there. One problem I see though is that these blog rappers are putting out a ridiculous amount of material and kind of flooding the market...with a bunch of average songs. Think this continues for another couple years then we swing back towards the mainstream or "real" album stuff.

hip hop has just changed. Most of the ppl I know would much rather listen to Nicki Minaj over Jay Z or Nas. Thats a definite sign.

Now back to the regularly scheduled program...

Hip hop has totally changed, who cares. Listen to what you want to listen to. Hip hop was a lot different before Jay Z and Nas...it used to be all about the DJ and all...who cares. Hip hop doesn't have a definite definition. There are dozens of sub genres of hip hop.

Exctatly. I still love hip hop and have plenty of good artists I listen to. Jadakiss, Jedi Mind Tricks, Talib, Mos Def, Blu, Dead Prez, J.Cole, Jay Electronica, Joe Budden, and Wiz Khalifa just to name some.

That mainstream garbage doesn't bother me, I haven't listen to the radio in years. People will listen to what they want to listen to. I made a choice to not listen to mainstream rap a long time ago and haven't turned back.

I hate the hip hop is dead crap. There are plenty of great artists out there. It is no different from any other music genre.
