Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Aside from my #1, everything else is subject to change, but here's my list...

    1. Wu-Tang Clan
    2. The Roots
    3. Mobb Deep
    4. Black Star
    5. Kidz In The Hall
    6. A Tribe Called Quest
    7. The LOX (D-Block)
    8. The Fugees
    9. OutKast
    10. Dipset
    11. Public Enemy
    12. The Firm
    13. De La Soul
    14. D12
    15. The Clipse
    16. Bone Thugs N Harmony
    17. NWA
    18. EPMD
    19. State Property
    20. G-Unit

I don’t count “groups” like Gang Starr, Eric B. and Rakim, Reflection Eternal, etc. (an emcee and a DJ).

If CRS (Kanye, Lupe, Pharrell) ever drops an album they will instantly be my #2.

Both of the albums are average at best but for me Paper Trail had the most songs I could listen to without wanting to just turn my iPod off.

I saw where she was coming from with her messages and all that, but I think I was too young too appreciate them. Even though I can appreciate them now, I still don't put her on MC Lyte's level as an MC. As for Lyte I was a fan ever since Lyte as a Rock and up until 93' when Bo$$ debuted Born Gangstaz, I thought she was the tightest female MC. There's no question though in my mind she's still top 3 or 4. In fact, I'd have to put her over Boss at least just because of her body of work, Boss only came out with the one album and an overlooked mixtape, even though I thought that one official release was a classic.

On another note, I was listening to my old Leaders of the New School today and it's crazy just how much I use to listen to that as a high school freshman. Still remembered the lyrics to a lot of the tracks. Anyway, I was wondering, why is it that Busta Rhymes is so often overlooked in discussions of all time greatest rappers? I very rarely, if ever, hear anyone mention him in those talks. Is it because of the content (lots of party type tracks, fun stuff)? It can't be his ability.
That's a good question. IMO, I could see someone making a case for being one of the all time greats BUT at the same time, I can see someone making a stronger case for him NOT being one of the all time greats.

It's good for discussion, so hey let's ask everybody else.

He's definitely not in my top 10.

                1. Nas
                2. Lupe Fiasco
                3. Royce Da 5;9"
                4. Notorious B.I.G.
                5. Jay-Z
                6. Ghostface Killah
                7. Eminem
                8. Rakim
                9. Joe Budden
                10. AZ

I'd also put Common, Jadakiss, The Game, Black Thought, Talib, and Ande 3000 over him off the top of my head.

Yea my list would be a little bit similar to yours, Streets.

I mean don't get me wrong, Busta ain't no slouch on the mic and is a damn good rapper and usually has some pretty good CDs but I just don't know if I could put him up there with the greats.

Put it like this, if All Time Rap Greats was the Pro Football Hall Of Fame, Busta would be Art Monk. It'll be a WHILE before I put him up there when talking about the All Time Greats.

"Subject to change" weren't the right words. I meant to say other than the Wu everything else is pretty much interchangeable. I just wrote stuff down as I thought of it.

It'd be very interesting to see how the "greats" would stack up in an ALL Pro Football kind of way (you know how they had gold tier, silver tier, and bronze tier legends? I would even go so far as to have a platinum tier for a select few).

It'd be really hard to categorize, but off top (these aren't my own rankings, i.e. I can't stand Pac, but love Lupe), but more a rough speculation based on where I see most people putting these guys...

Platinum tier: Pac, Biggie, Jay, Nas, Rakim, Eminem, etc.

Gold tier rappers: Kanye, Common, Method Man, Ghostface, KRS-One, Ice Cube, Jadakiss,, Dr. Dre, Andre 3000, LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, etc.

Silver Tier rappers: Budden, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, AZ, The Game, Lil' Kim, 50 Cent (he would be a gold, but more and more it seems like he's a fading fad), Lil Wayne, etc. This is about where I'd see Busta.

Bronze Tier: Black Thought, Prodigy, Cam'ron, Will Smith, etc.

I'd add 50 and Luda to the Gold Tier. Would make a strong case for T.I but in the end, I'd have to put him and Scarface among the Silver Tier and drop Wayne into the Bronze. Cam'ron would be out completely and I'd probably replace him with Beanie Sigel.

Matter of fact, I almost forgot about Snoop. I'd probably put him among the Gold Tier rappers as well.

                              Platinum doesn't do him justice...

Check out this freestyle on a radio station...about 7 minutes of straight freestyle...they even change up the beats on him.
