Actually, I'm not afraid of silence, but it bothers me. It makes the smallest of detectable sounds the most annoying thing in the world! It's like that annoy-a-tron thing... you're just laying there waiting for the next sound to happen, and when it does you flip out because you're just trying to sleep. But the concentration on such things keeps you awake even longer. At least, that happens to me.

As for light, I enjoyed sleeping with a nightlight at home in my room (I don't have a TV in my room at home). I'm prone to waking up in the middle of the night all of the time, and there's something comforting about having the nightlight on instead of just opening your eyes to pitch black going "WTF!"

I suppose people wonder what my roommates thought about the ambient noises thing. Well to be honest, most of them fell asleep long after I did, especially my roommate last year. I go to bed around 11:00 most of the time, and they are up until like 2:00. They have later classes so they can do it. You know what most of spring semester last year consisted of? Me falling asleep to my roommate playing Call of Duty. And I'm talking lights on, surround sound, him yelling in the headset... this is all music to my ears. I told him that I don't mind and he took advantage of it. To quote Fight Club: "Babies don't sleep this well."

I don't know why I like it, I just do.

I actually kind of get that. To combat my roommate's incredibly annoying TV, I ended up turning on the fan in my bathroom and now I sleep with a fan on every night.

Same here. I can fall asleep without the tv on, but I much prefer to have it on. I have always been like this. Its not a "I'm afraid of the dark" thing. I just can't stand silence when I'm trying to go to sleep. I don't know why, but the background noise soothes me and helps me to fall asleep.

I find that really interesting. Maybe I should try and sleep with the tv off to see if it helps with my sleep quality.

I never watch TV when I go to sleep. Give me darkness and silence.

Haven't had a TV in my room for years.

I agree. I'm in the category of "think too much."

Gotta fall asleep to Twilight Zone or a movie i've seen before.

Anyone heard of anybody falling asleep to playing video games (clean and sober?) That would be pretty weird..

I've done that a couple times. I haven't completely fallen asleep while playing but I've nodded off and a couple times I paused a game and woke up hours later.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Nope. I enjoy the dark...it's relaxing IMO. I just can't stop thinking about all the things I need to do before going to sleep...at night is the only time I have peace and quiet throughout a day so I wind up thinking about everything that I did that day, what needs to get done the next day and what needs to get done in the long-term. When running multiple projects every day, one tends to overanalyze things from every angle...especially being the only Sr. level networking guy at a fast growing corporation who has to worry about all the big things and little things - including personnel underneath me. Turning the sleep timer on for 30 minutes while I go to sleep allows me to forget about all that stuff and get to sleep (unfortunately it doesn't help waking up almost every morning at 3-4am and thinking about this stuff then).

I too hate the silence which is why I sleep with the fan on year round. The constant sound is stress relieving.

Doesn't bother me unless it's loud. The light does bother me in which case I just turn over.
