Re: Kid Cudi
Achieve mainstream success. I think Cudi will kinda be looked at as a one hit wonder with Day N Night. But of course that's contingent on how much Kanye West does for him I suppose. But I don't think he's the type where you listen on one of his songs, think its good, listen to his album/tape and think he's great. I think a lot of people will be turned off when they listen to his other stuff.[NYK|DAL|VT]

Re: Kid Cudi
Someone mentioned Asher Roth. He's a clown, but I can't hate on someone having a good time with music and actually saying something that makes sense. Does it have value? No. But, it's not some nonsense about dance steps or what clothes he wears.
He's telling a story which I think is cool.I'm not afraid to admit that I like Asher. I'm not a "frat boy, dude bro," but I am in college and his rhymes appeal to me. He's certainly going after a specific demographic, and if it's not you then it's not you.
He's just laid back and does his own thing. Partying, drinking, smoking weed... and, like someone else said, he's having fun with it.
And, though I hate to write it (and I hope I don't catch any slack for this... let me know if it's offensive), he's a white boy. I can't identify with a lot of stuff from black rappers because I haven't been through what they have... I haven't experienced racism, and I grew up in an upper-middle class family with no big problems (I'm not saying all black rappers came from "the hood," I'm just saying it's a big identifier for a lot of black rappers).
And he's being backed by some big name dudes... Steve Rifkind (and Akon), Jay-Z... I'm actually going to go see Asher in a few weeks here at PSU.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

Re: Kid Cudi
Asher's okay. He's just not very talented, IMO.
I think he's pretty much seen all the fame he's going to with I Love College.
I could be wrong, though. Apparently I was about Soulja Boi.
Yeah and Ruff Ryders, I completely agree. For some reason Drake's starting to catch some hate (probably for messing with Wayne), but he will blow up. He has a HUGE following right now, makes great music, and has a lot of commercial appeal. Plus he's repping Canada. We NEED someone (other than Kardinal Offishal) to make some noise in the Hip Hop game.Comment

Re: Kid Cudi
Dude, I'm white, from an upper middle class background, and in college. I just see through his bull****. I don't need someone to dress like me and rap about college. The thing is...pretty much all rappers put up an act of some sort or another. It just seems like his image is so contrived and driven by purely commercial reasons. Which is fine I guess...dudes trying to make a living. But it just isn't for me.I'm not afraid to admit that I like Asher. I'm not a "frat boy, dude bro," but I am in college and his rhymes appeal to me. He's certainly going after a specific demographic, and if it's not you then it's not you.

I think people also need to wait until Cudi actually releases a real album before completely judging him. Also, I don't think Cudi is necessarily a "hip hop" artist per se. He is sort of blending some different genres together (hip hop, R&B, house/electro). I think with Cudi it might take people to listen to him for a while before they can come around on him. His **** is different than a lot of the stuff out there, so it takes time for people to adjust to it.Comment

Man, Asher mentions Teddy Ruxpin in one track. That's comically dope."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Kid Cudi
I know this thread is about Kid Cudi, but I had to chime in on all the Asher Roth talk. A while ago my wife told me about some new white rapper who was supposed to be the next be thing - the next Eminem - and how we had to check him out because he was from this area. So I tuned into the late night talk show that night to see him perform and....damn. I thought he was awful. Then I heard his big hit song on the radio. Awful.
What is the deal with this dude? What's his appeal? I listen to a fair amount of rap, but Eminem is as close as I get to "radio rap." But this dude is seriously awful. I don't think his schtick is invented or contrived or anything, at least no more so than Biggie rapping about how he never had food on the table, etc. I just think his talent and his flow are both basically nonexistant. He can't even hold a candle to the Beasties. What's the deal?Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
