I really liked Get Him to the Greek. If you're a fan of the Apatow movies you should definitely check it out.

I'm a fan of Russell Brand as well so if you liked his Aldous Snow character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall you'll probably love the movie.

I saw Robin Hood Friday, my g/f wanted to see it. It was alright but they should have edited the movie better, it was too long.

Just watched Ghost Town(Ricky Gervais, Tea Leoni, Greg Kinnear) after it had been sitting around in my DVR for a while.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. Quality romantic comedy.

I really like Ghost Town. I watched it without knowing anything about it and found it too be a pretty funny flick. Ricky Gervais is hilarious in just about everything he does imo.

I'm watching Angels and Demons later today. I thought it was a better book than the davinci code so i'm hoping its a better movie as well.

From Paris with Love was pretty good. If you like non-stop action movies like Smokin Aces and Shoot Em Up you'll love this.

                    John Travolta steals the show.

                        Drag Me to Hell

Wasn't exactly what I expected, and for the most part in a good way. I can't say I liked it a lot or anything, but it certainly exceeded poor expectations I had going into it. It was pretty Raimi-esque to me, which was good enough I suppose. Some limits were a bit pushed while maintaining the PG-13 rating, in aspects that grossed me out where it probably shouldn't have been in the movie to begin with. Actually in some ways I'm sure the comedy in this movie is underrated to an extent as most people would probably think of this to be a horror movie. It's not a horror movie. Oh, and Alison Lohman > Alice Eve, she's a darling!

                        The Descent 2

Now this movie gets an unfair lack of viewings because people are deciding to canonize the original ending of the first movie, which as I stay spoiler-free means that they relied on the U.S. theatrical ending to make this one possible. In its defense, it actually does pretty well as a sequel in that it still carries the heart that the original had. It didn't become too Hollywood for its own good, though it does have its "sequel" elements that make me wonder what they were doing. It kind of has moments like The Hills Have Eyes 2 did following up its original. For the most part, you simply have to accept that the story is what it is to watch it, and you should be set.

                        My negatives with it:

                        1) The cave is just too damn bright. If anyone remembers the original, most of the creepiness stems from the fact that the only light in the caves is from their flashlights, and that's it. In this movie, the caves are just naturally lit up. Almost makes you feel like they're on a set (which they more than likely are).

                        2) As it takes an hour for the creatures to show up in the original, it takes 32 minutes for them to show up in the sequel, which means a lot of the movie is about scene after scene of "How can we scare the audience with a creature popping up for this character in this scene?" Obviously the movie is still playing a survival mode kind of story, but the original played this off better. The creatures were another obstacle in the caves in the original, in this one they are basically all that the movie is about. I guess you can't expect much more, however.

                        3) Shauna McDonald's character just seems different this time around. Even as an actress, her Irish accent is much heavier. It kind of makes it hard for one to remember that she is still the same Sarah from the first movie.

Anyway, there are a couple of decent twists, so aside from the plot contrivances, one or two big inconsistencies from the first movie (if you remember it well enough to catch onto them), and the lighting issue, it is a decent sequel to the original. Is it scary? Not really. But I think it's getting an unfair go because people won't accept that a sequel should exist, not because they think the movie itself is bad.

The Austin Powers Trilogy: Still hilarious. I was a bit worried they might not hold up all that well, the first two especially, but still plenty of gut clenchingly hilarious moments in all 3.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

The other day I watched a most interesting TV movie from 1970 called Carter's Army/Black Brigade. It had some blaxploitation elements to it but it was mostly a serious movie with some pretty good stars such as Robert Hooks, Richard Pryor, a young Billy Dee Williams and Rosey Grier.

                              Here's the plot:

A redneck officer is put in charge of a squad of black troops charged with taking an important bridge from the Nazis.
Said redneck officer is played by noted stilted actor Stephen Boyd whose character bordered on mustache twirling villainy but he does have a change at heart by the end of the movie. I have to say I was most impressed by Robert Hooks who played the Lt. for the all black company who is under Boyd's command. I've only seen Hooks as the cool Mr. T in Trouble Man but in this movie he's a lot more serious and stands up for his company.

Richard Pryor plays a cowardly guy who gets so scared at the situation that he's shooting up the trees screaming about the Germans coming to get them and goes hiding in a ditch where Rosey Grier sits by him and tries to tell him that they're all scared and that it's their mission to secure the bridge and all.

Actually the acting for the most part in this telefilm is quite good for a low budget effort. The story is a little inconsistent at times but that's to be expected. It was more of a character study in a lot of ways as you get the whole racist leading black people aspect and while the movie was heavy handed at times it made for an interesting 70 minutes.

So while it's a bit of a failure watching it from the eyes of someone in 2010 it still has the makings for an interesting big budget film if done right. Y'know Hollywood is bankrupt creatively. They can do worse then to remake this Tv movie into a big budget actioneer with a serious side to it.

I watched Mean Girls for a second time the other night. I liked it ok the first time, but I enjoyed it much more the second time around. Lohan was just so gorgeous, what a shame.

Also watched O Brother Where Art Thou? a couple nights ago, love it.
