This is undoubtedly true. The only thing you have to remember is that Boston wanted to bring Beane over to do the exact thing that Epstein did. They wanted Beane to play Moneyball with a higher payroll and a better shot at making the World Series, and they were going to offer the highest GM salary to do it as well. That's how much they bought into the philosophy. In a way, you could say they were playing Moneyball with Beane (paying him his true worth, whether other teams saw it or not). Oakland will have a tough chance to ever win again because other teams are playing the same game that Beane is with the same philosophy, but with an insurmountable budget.

    Anyway... Catfish... good movie.

Eh, I'd say Epstein took more of Bill James' concepts of SABR than the whole Moneyball aspect but that's splitting hairs a bit. Needless to say I'll be watching the movie soon though I hear they change quite a few facts to make it "Hollywood".

Just finished watching it now and I thought the ending was fine. I don't have any particular reasoning other than it just "felt" right to me.

Also, the movie itself was great IMO. JGL continues to be amazing, and the therapist girl was really great as well and probably had the second-best performance next to JGL. If you don't like Seth Rogen in other movies, you're probably not going to like him here but I thought he did well, even if he does have a limited range.

I also really liked the setting for some reason. Wherever they shot the movie (I want to guess Vancouver) just seemed to fit in well with the feel of the movie I thought.

Overall I'd give it a 4/5. Very glad I bought this despite not having seen it beforehand.

He didn't use Beane's Moneyball, no, but it was definitely his own take on it.

My main point - it's completely different than the Wildcat.
            You're confusing moneyball with sabermetrics

Bill James and sabermetrics revolutionized baseball, Billy beane and moneyball were a gmmmic.

Not really. The problem for Beane is that he got in ahead of the game. He was able to find all these underappreciated cheap players to fill roles because nobody was looking at the same numbers as he was. Now every GM is looking at those numbers, so these underappreciated guys are no longer unappreciated, and they're now paid fair market value instead of making dirt because teams weren't looking at them in the right light.

It's not that it was a gimmick, it's just that the league caught up to him.

Star Trek - I have to say I really like the cast. Still not sold on Zulu, but we'll see how that fairs in the next one. I've had the blu-ray since release, but just watched it this weekend and had forgotten that it is actually a well-put together movie even if it does meddle in Star Trek history for no reason at times.

its a gimmick because it doesnt work, beane just got lucky with how good that team turned out. its doesnt matter specifically what the other GMs do moneyball is about finding what other GMs are undervaluing and getting value out of those types of players but in the long run is just doesnt do well as a strategy in baseball because every 3 or 4 years you might have to redefine your entire team because of what is or isnt being undervalued.

That and the A's refuse to spend any money until they get a new park. Beane is handcuffed when it comes to making moves right now.

It isn't working for him now because all the other baseball teams with money figured out what he did and takes his players so he can't find "undervalued" talent or at least it's a lot harder to find undervalued talent. It's not a gimmick.

Other teams ARENT doing what he did though. Big money teams are still trying to get the "best" players, the same strategy they had before. The only difference is what they consider the best and that's thanks to bill james and sabermetrics. Even small market teams arent using moneyball they are using sabermetrcs to get a better handle on the value of players but they arent picking one stat and trying to build a team around it like Beane did. Moneyball is a gimmick because it was stopped once the rest of the league knew about it just like the wildcat was stopped once the rest of the NFL knew how to defend it. Same difference.

Benae introduced sabermetrics to the MLB through moneyball but that doesnt validate moneyball it validates how effective sabermetrics are. Moneyball cant be used effectively again and every team uses sabermetrics. Thats the difference between a gimmick and a revolutionary idea.
