Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Eh, I'd say Epstein took more of Bill James' concepts of SABR than the whole Moneyball aspect but that's splitting hairs a bit. Needless to say I'll be watching the movie soon though I hear they change quite a few facts to make it "Hollywood".Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Just finished watching it now and I thought the ending was fine. I don't have any particular reasoning other than it just "felt" right to me.
Also, the movie itself was great IMO. JGL continues to be amazing, and the therapist girl was really great as well and probably had the second-best performance next to JGL. If you don't like Seth Rogen in other movies, you're probably not going to like him here but I thought he did well, even if he does have a limited range.
I also really liked the setting for some reason. Wherever they shot the movie (I want to guess Vancouver) just seemed to fit in well with the feel of the movie I thought.
Overall I'd give it a 4/5. Very glad I bought this despite not having seen it beforehand.Last edited by BlueNGold; 01-30-2012, 08:25 AM.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Its not too thin and not too thick. You get the support your body needs.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
He would say he did, although a slightly different version since he had money to play around with as well, but Theo turned around the Sox with a focus on the minor leagues (guys like Pedroia, Youk, Ellsbury, Lester, Clay, etc.).
He didn't use Beane's Moneyball, no, but it was definitely his own take on it.
My main point - it's completely different than the Wildcat.
Bill James and sabermetrics revolutionized baseball, Billy beane and moneyball were a gmmmic.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Not really. The problem for Beane is that he got in ahead of the game. He was able to find all these underappreciated cheap players to fill roles because nobody was looking at the same numbers as he was. Now every GM is looking at those numbers, so these underappreciated guys are no longer unappreciated, and they're now paid fair market value instead of making dirt because teams weren't looking at them in the right light.
It's not that it was a gimmick, it's just that the league caught up to him.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Star Trek - I have to say I really like the cast. Still not sold on Zulu, but we'll see how that fairs in the next one. I've had the blu-ray since release, but just watched it this weekend and had forgotten that it is actually a well-put together movie even if it does meddle in Star Trek history for no reason at times.

its a gimmick because it doesnt work, beane just got lucky with how good that team turned out. its doesnt matter specifically what the other GMs do moneyball is about finding what other GMs are undervaluing and getting value out of those types of players but in the long run is just doesnt do well as a strategy in baseball because every 3 or 4 years you might have to redefine your entire team because of what is or isnt being undervalued.
Do you really care where I sent this from?MLB: Texas Rangers
Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
NCAA: SMU, UTA
NFL: Dallas Cowboys
NHL: Dallas Stars
NBA: Dallas Mavericks

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
It isn't working for him now because all the other baseball teams with money figured out what he did and takes his players so he can't find "undervalued" talent or at least it's a lot harder to find undervalued talent. It's not a gimmick.

Benae introduced sabermetrics to the MLB through moneyball but that doesnt validate moneyball it validates how effective sabermetrics are. Moneyball cant be used effectively again and every team uses sabermetrics. Thats the difference between a gimmick and a revolutionary idea.Last edited by untrugby; 01-31-2012, 03:46 PM.Comment

A very Australian film with a touching, funny story. Not sure if you guys would like it as much as I did but I reallly enjoyed it. Kinda reminds me of movies of old with minimal special effects but a great story that drags you in. 9/10Comment
