Just watched an interesting French/Italian co-production of a film focusing on Pontius Pilate. I gotta say it was a bit uneven but interesting.

Went on a movie binge yesterday:

Tia Chi Hero. Enjoyed it--the martial arts sequences were good. This is the sequel to Tia Chi Zero.

Bullet to the Head. Good stuff if you like gritty up close and personal violence. Good cop (guy that plays Han in the Fast and Furious)/Bad Criminal (Stallone) story line

42. Really enjoyed it. No complaints here.

Beowulf - I had heard kind of mixed things about this when it first came out, but didn't really remember anything specific other than the mixed emotions. Anyway, apart from some drop off in CGI quality during some sequences and the monochrome backdrops I thought the film was great. Pretty straightforward story and character development with phenomenal CGI and a running thread of badass action scenes. It had the tone of a Game of Thrones mixed with 300.


Beasts of the Southern Wild - I loved this and it is an instant benchmark of modern film, but I don't know when I'll be able to watch it again as it is relatively draining by the time the credits roll. Its an emotional drain and nothing that really takes away from the film since it manages to pull the viewer into this ether-world. It runs the rainbow with emotion and atmosphere seamlessly switching between dark, dreary, and depressing, to childish imagination, innocence, and overzealous joy. Hushpuppy is easy to get hooked into with her big-eyed charm and her journey to restore balance in her universe and save her father is breathtaking in its scope and imagination.

Silver Linings Playbooks - Was'nt expecting much but a romantic chick flick,i enjoyed the movie heaps!...If you dig deep into the movie aureate whole thing sounds silly but i enjoyed the movie because it was more about sickness and moving on with your life!

Django Unchained - Really cool movie,Jaime Fox was awesome as Django...typical Tarantino,lots of blood guts and action scenes!...has some very intense scenes

I feel shameful for not wasting more words on this film critique than I feel it deserves for the sake of my own laziness, but in my brief impressions I will state this was an incredibly well done cop drama.

I've seen all of David Ayer's work (I'm counting Training Day too for his writing credits, and in which case I'll also include The Fast & the Furious), and it's strange how he can do the "two cop partners in L.A." film so many different ways. I'll keep watching what he does, because he entertains and he sticks to grit and grind. There aren't any rules or assumptions with his films.

The casting was top-notch, because the acting was top-notch. I didn't even know Anna Kendrick was in this film, and she seemed very matured compared to anything else I've seen her in. The film style could be what attracted me with this more than anything else, but there were some inconsistencies with it too (why not always go handheld, for instance?). I simply watched this film and felt like this is how things are done, so it was good to get a portal into LAPD and not have to witness it for real. Unfortunately, what you see is what you get: ghetto Los Angeles, so there are F-bombs flying left and right (statistically, it's used three times per minute in this film).

Not so much re-watch value, but I got it on sale as a cheap $8 blind buy and I don't have any regrets with that.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was really disappointed with this movie. Like you said, the camera choices were too inconsistent for my liking. Plus, the whole handheld camera things with both the LAPD and gang felt a little too forced.

GI Joe Retaliation

There's a good movie in there somewhere. I think the overall plot is a great idea/story to tell. However this is put together so poorly it's just bad. It's like a 9/10 idea with 1/100 execution. Ninja fights were cool,when they meet Joe and the London scene but this thing is so lost I'd believe it was given to 10 different people...none of which that communicated with each other in any way what-so-ever...to put together and edit/produce. It's just cut terribly. In fact I'm pretty sure this is the worst cut professionally made/big budget movie I've ever seen. Even including indie/amatuer stuff it's still down there.

Also Bruce Willis made everyone look bad. Rza was terrible to begin with. A 44 year old black man cannot pass as an 84 year old Asian man. At least not with more work than what was put in here.

The blu-ray seems to be devoid of extras. I only rented it and they don't always include both discs so maybe it's a 2 disc thing. I can say there's probably a ton of deleted scenes (seems to be a few in the credits) but none of them are on here. There's commentary and you get to choose between a Joe and Cobra menu.

The ending was done that way because MacFarlane was adamant that there wouldn't be a sequel though i've since heard that they're going ahead with one.

The Wolverine - Finally a good Wolverine movie, good action (train scene) and a decent story. Only problem was the ending, not going to spoil anything but it was a tad cheesy.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox - I thought it was amazing. I do however have a man crush on The Flash so it weighs my opinion. Really liked the more adult oriented action. Awesome story.

Dead Man Down. Started off a little weird, but turned out to be alright. The action scenes were pretty good.

Monsters Inc. 3D. Loved it. Was and still is my favorite Pixar movie by far. 3D was very good but no need upgrading from the 2D (unless you have a 7.1 setup to take advantage of the new audio track).

Town Tamer (1965) This was one of those "geezer" westerns by producer A.C. Lyles starring an over the hill Dana Andrews. Pretty good story, some decent action and a story that would've been more fitting for a younger cast.

Trivia: The director is someone Quentin Tarantino is a fan of.
