    Blockers
Wife wanted to get out of the house (we're experiencing an early heat wave here in AZ), so chose something that wasn't Avengers. It was a decent comedy, worth the price of admission.

We saw A Quiet Place with the wife and son. Enjoyed it. Outstanding acting paced and carried this film.

      A good suspense thriller.

Pacific Rim 2. Started off fine enough, but turned into a steaming pile of bad ridiculous. Sharp contrast from the first one when all said and done. I will say the battle scenes are impressive, but without a good story, we know how that goes. Clint Eastwood should not be proud of his son being in this one, other than trying to sound and look like him from time to time.

Yeah, did not think it was good at all. The twist was too easy to call, there wasn’t enough of what makes it good - big badass battles - to make up for how mindless and dumb the rest was.

Spectacular, but near impossible to discuss w/o spoilers. My wife and I loved everything about it, and the screenwriters/director has some big balls to do this film the way they did. It was a really good time at the theater!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Watched the HBO premier of Dunkirk last night.

I was really looking forward to this one but man what a letdown. I was familiar with the story and IMO the movie did a halfway decent job at telling it but the charachter development was basically non-existent. The jumping around from the different air/sea/land perspective was cool left a lot of questions. I think the story of Dunkirk would have been better told over a more drawn-out miniseries.

Two of my favorite actors in Tom Hardy & Cillian Murphy and both of them had wasted performances IMO.

^ I'm not defending it, but just stating that Nolan's intent was not to tell the history of the event, but rather just tell a moment of harrow and heroism, using that structure as its stage.

I'm interested in seeing Darkest Hour and seeing if it serves as a good companion piece to Dunkirk, so that more of that time period is exposed to us.

I gotcha but I just thought some character development and context could have gone a long way. Dunkirk is such an amazing story IRL but to me the movie only barely scratched the surface. 300k soldiers, over 2000 planes and vessels and somehow the movie just seemed to gloss over it at times. If the commander didn’t bring up the 300k soldiers you would have never known.

There were some good moments of tension (fighter pilot not being to get out of his cockpit, German plane bearing down on the civilian vessel, etc...) but jumping from story to story kind of had the opposite affect on me. Instead of playing up that tension it killed it IMO.

I didn’t go in expecting Saving Private Ryan but when I saw the actors headlining it I expected a little more.

For sure. I saw some character development that some others didn't, and the more I watch it the more I like it... but I don't think it's Nolan's best film by far.

On a somewhat related note to Nolan (and movies), upcoming this week I will have my second anniversary screening of Memento for my students (it's a part of a larger assignment). Prior to showing it, I already have all of Nolan's other film trailers cued up in chronological release order. Many of them don't know about Following, Insomnia, The Prestige, and for the younger crowd many don't know about Interstellar.

One of the greatest things to do is see the reactions from other people seeing something for the first time that you've already seen before. Selfishly, I can also show this film because of how wowed and perplexed people are by the end of it. Nolan tends to do that with the majority of his films, really.

Some of them will hate you for it. For the few that are high while watching it good luck.

Definitely watch The Darkest Hour. I saw Dunkirk and this around the same time and it made Dunkirk way better for me watching a 2nd time after TDH.

Also Gary Oldman was unbelievable in this movie. There was absolutely no way you could tell it was him playing the part.
