Re: What movies have you seen recently?
One of the many reasons I haven't upgraded televisions yet and I'm sticking to my plasma. I'm wondering if down the line we will see an OLED throw 3D back into the mix or not.
Also, if/when I move I'm trying to determine if I should go for a 3D-ready projector instead. I think those have a better shot of staying in the 3D market than television screens.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I'll just go through this quickly since A) it's a poverty row production and B) no one here is gonna care about it.
Last night I watched a 1948 flick called Shed No Tears. The basic gist of it is that a husband and wife create a fire in a hotel where some poor guy gets burned to death beyond all recognition. They make it seem like it was the husband that died so they can get the insurance money. The hubby leaves town so the wife can collect the money and go to him. Lo and behold the wife is really cheating on the husband with a mutual friend so the hubby's left in the lurch without knowing.
Well the Insurance company isn't so sure it's a death of natural causes which holds things up and the man's son from another marriage (the hubby is older than the wife) comes into the picture and thinks something fishy happened. He hires a detective who looks like a rich, suave guy but who is really a slime ball trying to get money from both the wife and husband as the film goes on.
Anywho, this movie is not something to watch if you believe in the goodness of people. EVERYONE except the son and the father (after he realizes what a dope he's been) are scumbags especially the detective. For a flick that's just a shade over an hour there's a lot in it and while the acting wasn't the greatest (the father and detective were the best) it kept my interest. Anywho, you can find the movie on youtube if you want.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

BlacKKKlansman
All praise to the big homie and president of Knicks Nation, dude absolutely did his thing. My opinion walking out of the theater was this was a 3/5 movie, with about 45 minutes of a 5/5 movie inside of it. Having now slept on it, read some other opinions to crystallize things, and reflected on what I didn't love, I think it's just a 5/5 movie. It's not subtle (something I don't think anyone would accuse Spike of in the first place), there are overt connections made between what was happening then and happening today but man let me tell you if you thought it was quiet when Thanos snapped his fingers...shiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeet yeen seen nothing yet. John David Washington (and I just can't get over the fact the son of the guy who Spike got for Malcolm X is in this role) kills the role, my boy Kylo was also great in his role. Maybe underutilized as far as motivation but there were some really moving realizations he came to. Topher Grace as David Duke was great, he was goofy in a Topher Grace way but there's one scene in particular where he gets serious and proves himself.
The directing... Another shout out to my boy Spike. Some of the shots were awesome. Of course we get the dolly shot, which totally threw me off as it doesn't feel explicitly like a Spike joint so when I saw that it was like oh yeah he made this movie lol. There's a really tight juxtaposition of two meetings between 2 different groups. I even liked the song they kept going back to for music montages. I actually liked the direction and visuals a lot in She's Gotta Have It (the show) so I didn't really think Spike had lost it there. That dance scene in the beginning... My people, My people!
Funny coincidence I almost went to visit some UVA friends and see this with them... That would've been an experience.Last edited by DieHardYankee26; 08-20-2018, 09:28 AM.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Mile 22
Saw Mile 22 last night. I had caught some of the reviews of the movie and walked in pretty lukewarm but left the theater satisfied. It was a good movie. I will admit though, Wahlberg can be somewhat irritating at times but overall the movie was good. I was pleasantly surprised by Iko Uwais though, I thought he was excellent.
Action scenes moved too fast though, it made some scenes confusing to keep up with. However definitely a movie worth recommending.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Couple of solid flicks I watched this weekend...
The Iceman (2012) starring Michael Shannon.
It's getting to the point where I'll watch a movie for no other reason than Michael Shannon is in it. He's really become a compelling actor and a specialist at playing shady, edgy, menacing, commanding, streetwise, conflicted, and even sociopath types of characters. Winona Ryder and Ray Liotta both had integral roles and even James Franco and David Schwimmer made appearances (I still can't take Schwimmer seriously to this day--he'll always be Ross Geller to me). Among others. This movie tried hard to portray Shannon's character (hitman Richard Kuklinski) as multifaceted, which I think angered some people who maintain there was really only one side--the hitman/mass murderer side (based on a true story). A gritty, unforgiving movie that riffs on Goodfellas a time or two, but is significantly less glamorous about thugg lyfe. Plot could be simplified as lots of people pulling out guns in cars and watch out for the cyanide-toting ice cream man. If I had one complaint, I don't think this movie was long enough and the ending feels a bit abrupt.
Blood Ties (2013) starring Billy Crudup and Clive Owen.
I thought to myself a few times this could be mistaken as a Martin Scorsese joint. It's a masculine period piece of 1970s Americana, but not the stoned-out, coming of age in post-Vietnam suburban America that is quite prevalent for movies of this period. The atmosphere and soundtrack also could be easily mistaken for coming right out of Casino (check out Bad Girl by Lee Moses and see if this song fits equally well when Ace Rothstein first lays eyes on Ginger in Casino and you'll see what I mean). This movie is less about organized crime though, and more about small-time heists vs local cops. But, it's mostly about the decades-long frayed relationship between two brothers--one who lives a life of crime and one who goes into law enforcement. Also about sacrifice and redemption. Lots of eye candy in this one with a trio of young-ish, nominal leading ladies (Marion Cotillard, Zoe Saldana, Mila Kunis) in important supporting roles. An older James Caan isn't exactly reprising Santino Corleone at this stage, but it's always a pleasure to watch him do the hardboiled, macho patriarch role. Both Clive Owen and Billy Crudup were fantastic in the lead roles. I can't stress this last line enough. Both leads are understated, yet powerful in their roles. One of the better climax scenes at the end. Very tense, although not altogether unpredictable.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
All I could think of after this was all said an done was Goldblum's line from Jurassic Park:
In greater seriousness, the conspiracy theory side of me couldn't help but think that here is Hollywood's continual push to have us be okay with cloning...Spoilereven of people.Last edited by daflyboys; 08-27-2018, 12:44 AM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Now that Searching is finally out, I'm really hoping some of you get a chance to see it. Sadly it's not a wide release in the U.S. With my AMC Stubs A-List membership, I plan on seeing this at least once or twice more in theater. Back in June I called it my favorite film of the year. I have a feeling it could drop after a second viewing or so, but the first viewing was so very engaging that I am still riding that high from it.
Currently I have nothing else I really want to see; I'll check out The Nun in a couple of weeks, but other than that the films out have kind of hit a bit of a lull for me. Waiting for Hereditary to hit Redbox next week as well.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
