Speaking of Jeff Bridges, Bad Times at the El Royale is must see. Possibly one of the best movies I've seen in recent memory. The cast was tremendous. Performances by the lesser known actors is what really set it apart. The editing and storyline was A1.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Back in August, I got the AMC Stubs-A-List membership because I wanted to go see the TDK IMAX re-release, and getting that was cheaper than the ticket itself. Granted, I had to be committed for three months but I figured I'd take advantage of it. About a week or two later I went to see a pre-screening, and caught two other films that day in the process (another one IMAX). Then I ended up having another commitment the night that I bought a TDK ticket, and couldn't go.

To my knowledge, I haven't seen a movie in theaters since. The problem is that my AMC theaters are just too far away from me and I have been far too inconvenienced to go when I wanted to. So I have spent probably $100 on two movies.

It's worth it, but damn I haven't been doing it right.

Only yesterday I watched Aquaman and it was kinda disappointing to say the least. Could have done better as story seemed dull all the way.

That sums up why I haven't jumped in yet. Closest good AMC is about 35 minutes away. I guess I could always do double features.

I just watched a movie called SEARCHING. I rented it on redbox on XMAS based on good reviews and I thought it was terrible. I don't know who thought the idea of filming some one searching the web and opening up pages for 80% of the movie was thrilling or exciting but they need to get slapped in the face. Please do not spend any money on this..
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

Ouch. That has been my favorite movie this year, and I would highly recommend it. I guess that's why we all have opinions, though.

I also guess one would just have to know going into it what kind of film it is. I assume if you knew what kind of film it was, and knew you wouldn't like that kind, then I guess I wouldn't recommend it.

The problem with a movie like Searching is that it's built on a gimmick and if people react badly to it then it's going to sour them on the actual story. I think a movie built on the hook of searching the web for 80% isn't strong enough for a cinema experience. Something like that should be released on digital/blu-ray only.

Actually, I don't think you could be more wrong based on my cinematic experience.

I saw a pre-screening, and the rest of the audience in the theater with me was hunting that big screen for every clue, easter egg, and bit of nostalgia we could find. I was whispering in the ear of the stranger next to me, pointing to the screen every chance I could get... and we were speculating at every turn to boot. This film isn't built on forced comedy, but natural comedic moments based on social media and technology alike dominoed throughout the audience. It's not like they were a loud chatterbox or anything, but the grumblings between each other was simply felt when need be, and I thought the interactivity was extremely supportive.

I just got this for Christmas, and I can wait to watch this again by myself, or even with a single friend... but I can't wait to watch this with a group of five or six others, and not just on some laptop either. Nonetheless, I urged those who wanted to check it out to see it in a crowded theater for that very reason. The audience seems like it would respect the situation each time out and do what would enhance one's viewing.

That being said, if this did go straight to Netflix I don't think I would have liked the film any less.

                      100% agree!

My wife and I talked for hours after seeing this film. It was about so much more than you ever see on the screen. If this had come out pre-Tarentino, it might have gotten more Oscar attention. As it is, so many critics dismissed it as Tarantino-like and missed the big picture.

Here's a pretty good review from my go to reviewer, Mark Kermode.

I think the film might have been more appealing to me if it was filmed in the traditional sense. I also thought one of the main casting choices was bad as well. I know the majority of today's younger society lives on their phones/net and they may love the interactivity of that element. just wasn't for me.

When I left my impressions, I said that I think it would have worked either way, but they would have had to find a lot of other ways to provide exposition that was otherwise found through using the web, and I don't know how much I would have liked that exposition as a result. Would have reminded me of Edge of Darkness.

If you mean Debra Messing, I agree. I thought she was not good, at all.

See, as much as I agree, what I thought was cool about this was it kind of served as a "fish out of water" experience as well. It was great seeing him go in a live chat room for the first time, or navigate through resetting a password, do the spreadsheets... I honestly don't know how it will hold up for a repeat viewing by myself, but as long as I can live vicariously through others as they watch it for the first time and discover as the main character does. I thought it was extremely cool and innovative, and very good at doing it all in the process.

Plus, the larger themes involved regarding social media were just so true for today's world that it really made the whole thing feel real. I know there are some elements that make you go: "Ehh, maybe they're pushing it a little too much," but I enjoyed the groundedness of it all wholeheartedly that made the filming style really worth pushing. I thought the second Unfriended even had enough suspension of disbelief to work just enough as well, whereas the first one just felt way too gimmicky and a bit out of place.

So I just re-watched Searching with my mom, sister and her boyfriend and they saw it for the first time.

They all thought it was strong and dug it, and really appreciated the filming style as well even though they were very skeptical about the idea going into it. I asked them to give it ten minutes, and if it was too weird we could swap it out. They were hooked.

Now from my experience, very strangely my eyes got glassy time and again. I honestly don't even know if it was the story, or the beautiful execution by Aneesh Chaganty. The opening to the film alone made we want to just stand up, applaud, and say: "Bravo." I just can't believe how well done it was. And then there were a lot of familial undertones that I always get me in films that I can't ever not get emotional for, of course.
