Grand Canyon Massacre (1964): An early Spaghetti pre-Leone starring James Mitchum, son of Robert. It was a pretty tired old plot dealing with a range war but it wasn't too bad, just stale. The main thing that caught my attention was Mitchum who looked like a clone of his father. Too bad the acting didn't carry over to him.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Just rented/watched Mortal Engines and wish I hadn't. Although I'm really glad I ended up not going to the theater to see it last winter. Would've been a waste of $10 + concessions rather than enriching Amazon by $2.99. It was just a really bad and uninteresting movie not worth elaborating on any further.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Had some work to do and put Shawshank Redemption on again (Amazon Prime). Forgot how many great scenes there were in this movie. Even the casting of the minor characters was spot on. There is one thing that bothered me however ....
SpoilerOk, it took Andy all those years to tunnel out and he knew it would take however long it would take, but once he got to the sewage pipe, how did he know that that would be corroded, too, to the point where it would only take 3 strikes with a rock to break through?
Also watched Patch Adams again. Yes, very idealistic, but a great message overall for anyone providing any kind of care to others. A bit hard to watch Williams and Hoffman in the same scenes, especially their last one.
Funny how Bob Gunton played the prick so well in both movies. Has he ever not played a prick?

40 Year Old Virgin
I watched this a couple days ago, but it had been years (maybe even a decade) since I've seen it last. The cast is legendary now. Elizabeth Banks is fire. The movie itself holds up surprisingly well for being 16 years old. The story is still light-hearted and good natured. The humor is still hilarious especially some of the more subtle lines that got lost in the shuffle years ago. Honestly, I was surprised by how well I still enjoyed it.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
So I was feeling a bit blah and wanted to watch some stuff that was undemanding so thanks to the CTV movies site/app I watched both Smurfs movies. (Yeah yeah, laugh at me if you must)
I heard a lot of bad things about the first Smurfs movie but it wasn't THAT bad. The story was barely there but at least there was a structure to it and while you can't say a major motion picture adaptation of Smurfs can have some heart to it there was at least an attempt to honor Peyo's creation.
The movie kinda drags whenever Hank Azaria isn't on screen. His characterization of Gargamel was crazy over the top and FUN! I loved his interaction with his cat Azrael as well. It was pretty much a souped up version of Gargamel from the cartoon series. Seriously, I could watch an entire film with Gargamel and Azrael.
The other human actors weren't bad. Anything that has Neil Patrick Harris is going to have some redeeming factor to it and OMG Jayma Mays is cuuute! As for the Smurfs they were pretty funny at times and I couldn't believe it when I read that Jonathan Winters voiced Papa Smurf. He didn't sound anything like his usual self. Interestingly the Smurf movies would be his last film works as he died in 2012.
The 2nd Smurfs movie suffered from sequelitis IMO. They ramped up the silly physical comedy and stunts which showed they didn't really have much of a story to hang their hat on. Hank Azaria also didn't seem to be quite as into it this time around. I don't know if it's me but it seemed he lost a little of the Gargamel voice the 2nd time around. That being said, they ramped up the comedy between Gargamel and Azrael even more and that was pretty funny. Sadly the last third of the movie was more or less the same (with slight differences) as the first movie.
I thought the Smurfette storyline that ran throughout was actually understandable and relatable especially for young kids who may have adoptive parents etc etc. That's one thing you can say for these two films for all the banality at times, there's at least a good life lesson in there at the end. It isn't as cloying as the denouements for the old TGIF sitcoms but it's definitely intended to pull at the ol' heart strings.
So while they're not the greatest movies in the world I think they at least have some redeeming features to them. I was a little rankled that some of the humor in both movies was a little uh, too adult in nature at times. I guess they want to appeal to the adults but c'mon, Smurfette doing her best Marilyn Monroe impression in the first movie was a little much.
Anywho, it's passable entertainment and that's all I really expected from these flicks. If you care, watch the first one for Hank Azaria's crazy OTT acting.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Escape Room
I avoided all the trailers when I thought I was going to see a pre-screening, but had other commitments and didn't go. Needless to say, it went about as I expected. I thought it would be a bit more "horror" than "action" though. Kind of weird how I even remember only hearing one curse word throughout the entire film.
Anyway, for the most part I actually enjoyed it. Although they didn't lengthen the run time for the sake of more breathing room within the puzzles for the audience to play along with (not that they necessarily could anyway), I do think the brisk pace just helped move things along well for the film's sake, and I was able to buy in. I didn't know escape rooms were a real thing, actually (obviously not like this). Set designs for this were very cool as well.
They dealt with exposition in kind of a strange way, combining show with tell when really I think they could have completely avoided both. I think it's part of what the movie feel cheesier than it was already set up to be. I think it's because this could have been a nice plot that we could've had feel less like we're watching a movie than us just watching people do things, but too many movie-like bits got in the way of that and I think it detracted fromt he experience. There were some weird editing gaffs at times as well, specifically in the audio.
For most of the "pretty good" that Escape Room had to offer though, it really gave out by the last twenty minutes, though. Probably turned it on its head for enough people that were going along with it to go, "Yeah, this is too much." I wish they mellowed it out significantly. It ultimately felt like a weird blend of Exam with The Belko Experiment/The Hunger Games that detracted from the experience, and maybe even left the door open for sequels. The problem with a sequel is you know they will only upscale, not downscale... so even those who liked the best parts of this first flick will likely lose hope the next time one of these rolls around.
I'd very much like to try an actual escape room, though.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Just watched The Predator last night and I thought it was easily top 10 of the worst films I have seen this year. I don't understand how they can continuously screw up movies with such a bad *** character. SMHEA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.Comment
