Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I've watched a few old, and great, Alfred Hitchcock films over the years and I've always enjoyed the few I've seen, last night I finally watched Hitchcock's The Birds, but this is the first movie of his I didn't care for. I know I'm 57 years late to the show but: 2 thumbs down. it had so much potential but the accompanying story that set up the first hour just killed it for me. I was really hoping for something similar to The Happening. the bird attack scenes were really well done especially for a movie from 1963. wouldn't mind a fresh take on this with a better surrounding story since Hollywood loves to regurgitate old ideas.Spoilerthe only little thing I disliked about the actual bird aspect to the movie was that there was no known reason for the attacks, though I'm sure that's what Hitchcock was going for
yeah, I did just put spoilers around a film more than a half century old lol but here, I'll make up for that: ding dong the witch is dead, and the Oz Wizard wasn't really a wizard lolOSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

That being said, that's what makes the movie most ominous to others; or rather, it's not the movie itself, but the real-life implications that could occur as a result of it. What is to stop birds from just absolutely revolting on us today and picking us apart from the sky? What if one day we became their prey? We're already living in fear of mingling with others, so what would going outside do next?
Here was a pretty recently posted video that makes you question what kind of hell is breaking loose sometimes (they weren't attacking people, but like the person filming I sure as heck would just stay in my car):

Not sure if they still show it but I think Starz or one of the premium movie channels would air episodes of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" if you want more Hitchcock.
There is a really solid one with Telly Savalas.Comment

Charlie Donovan: How would you like to manage the Indians?
Lou Brown: Ohhhh, I don't know...
Over the last 31 years, I would love to have a dime for everytime that we've used that Lou Brown line, lol.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
You may be the first person to ever say this about The Happening. No seriously, I haven't run across one person who had anything good to say about that atrocity. Wind? The enemy is.... wind? That's from the comfortably rich M. Night.
I think what The Birds brought at the time was playing on people's fears about an unexpected entity that is in real life around them every day and would never think about it. When they would replay it on TV, we always tried to catch it, just to get a glimpse of the farmer who was killed. That was as close to gruesome as you got on TV at the time.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
While Major League II isn't great, I still love the bit where Lou Brown/Gammon is in the hospital celebrating with a small hidden radio listening to the game while a dry British drama is on TV.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I'm never going to stop saying this, but I firmly believe The Happening was absolutely a troll job by M. Night Shyamalan, and if so is the greatest one in cinematic history. It absolutely has to be.
yeah, put me in the uncommon opinion on the Happening, I rather enjoyed it but if Zooey Deschanel were in a movie about watching paint dry, I'd probably still give it a chance. I also wasn't bothered by Wahlberg's scene with the old woman: ‘‘what!? no!!’’ though you can't be blamed if you confused him in that moment with Tommy Wiseau from The Room lol
NSFW warning.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Devil's Advocate
This popped up on Netflix and I have fond memories of watching this 30 minutes at a time randomly on TNT.
It's weird as **** and certainly relishes in that weirdness. I'd say it's a good B level movie or a really bad A level movie - sometimes you can't tell. All the southern accents are terrible. Charlize Theron is a baby in this. Al Pacino is chewing scenery all over the damn place. Keanu is still in that weird "not terrible, but still not very good" range of acting.
Anyway, its a fun, entertaining ride. Very long, though and could have been easily cut down into a two-part Law & Order episode. The whole premise to me is wacky and the movie doubles down on it every chance they get.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Host (2020)
This is a 56-minute Shudder original production that just came out today (like literally at midnight). My friend Haley Bishop is in it (I once mentioned that she was in Angel Has Fallen as well), and as every character in the flick shares the name of their real life counterparts, her character is named Haley and is kind of the "main character" I guess, if you would call it that. She's on the top portion of the cover pictured below.
It's an Unfriended type of film as it's a screencast of several friends all on Zoom together, relevant in today's time as they mention the quarantine. They are using Zoom to do a seance, and as you can expect some evil supernatural stuff occurs.
I'm just going to play the bias card and say that I enjoyed watching it. Yeah the foreshadowing at the beginning was obvious and there, and with 56 minutes of movie there is only so much character development and so much explanation of anything that you can have, that I frankly didn't care and just watched it for what it was. These screencast movies are pretty easy to get through as well. Obviously nothing is going to touch Searching (2018), but if you enjoyed Unfriended, have an hour to spare, and want to support Blzer's friend, go ahead and give this one a looksie.
If that doesn't help, so far it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (only ten reviews, but that could have gone any direction imaginable).
