Re: What movies have you seen recently?

CMH nailed it. I only watched this on the computer and the volume wasn't very loud at all so i'll have to re-watch at some point to CLEARLY hear all the dialogue but yeah, this movie didn't disappoint.

    A couple quickies:

I saw The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 after reading the earlier review and I have to say they hit a home run with this. It's easily the best comic to animated film in the history of DC Animated. There are a couple things here and there that are changed but overall it stuck to the core story and you really see the mental and physical struggle of the older Batman. To say Batman's mind is not a nice play to look into would be an understatement.

I wondered how they'd do the intermittent TV broadcasts and such and they did it pretty well. It ALMOST had the feel of the same kind of material in Robocop 2 & 3 which Miller wrote as well. Unlike the Robocop movies while the broadcasts were at times a little funny they did serve to move the plot along much better. I'm only wondering how they're going to do that with the 2nd part of the story where the background is a lot more dated with the politics of the situation.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the animation but it suited the movie well and Peter Weller took getting used to but he grew into the role for me.

    Excellent movie, check it out!

    Now for something completely different.....

    Untamed Frontier (1952)

This was strictly boilerplate and as such it got totally predictable by the 3rd act HOWEVER it's saved by some very good acting by Joseph Cotten, Shelley Winters, and Scott Brady with a nice turn by Minor Watson as the salty, ill tempered and cranky father of Brady and uncle of Cotten.

    Here's the summary:

The Denbow family hope to freeze out homesteaders by denying access across their land; but to evade a murder charge, Glenn Denbow marries the only witness, Jane, who's conveniently in love with him, but favors the settlers. When Glenn goes back to his blackmailing old flame Lottie, a warm regard develops between Jane and cousin Kirk Denbow. Things come to a head when an impending range war coincides with a rustling foray
It's acutally not that bad of a movie but like I said the boilerplate/ho hum nature of the script towards the end made it predictable and took a lot of the wind out of its sails. Cotten played Kirk very well and gave one the impression of a roughneck, tough guy who can be swayed by love which he finds in Winters' Jane. Scott Brady does a really good job as the reckless, bullyish idiot Glenn.

As a matter of background Universal in this period released a lot of B level westerns with a limited budget but often they'd overcome that with smart scripts and pretty good acting. This was no exception and while the movie is predictable the acting by the three principals lights up the screen as apparently all 3 of them during production didn't have much love for each other so the intensity in their scenes is ratcheted up a bit by the behind the scenes acrimony.

    I give this a solid 2 1/2 stars.

I've still got to watch The Running Man though.....

Watched the horror anthology V/H/S on Amazon Instant Video. It was horrible. Do not waste your time unless you like seeing wholly unappealing people on screen for long periods of time getting terrorized in nonsensical sorts of ways. Waste of time and money.

No. The first story involves 3 guy friends who are obviously going to die. Two of them were so obnoxious I was praying for it to happen ASAP. My wife is a huge horror movie fan (which is why we watched it) and she despised it. Stay away.

Surprisingly good. Much better than all those Marvel movies that get so much hype.

              Just watched Prometheus.

It was pretty good. I hope there's a sequel.

Act of Valor. Enjoyed it...very intense. Action scenes felt like I was watching a video game play out ala Gerald Butler's Gamer.

I think the difference is that with Marvel movies or any superhero movie for that matter, people have a construct already going in for the most part. Writers and producers have to balance between the story that was and the story that is. Planet of the Apes is basically a story movie driven and can construct as needed. Though I'm certainly not taking away from it and really enjoyed it, other than....

I can see that being an issue with comic book fans. For me it has more to do with finding almost all comic book movies overrated.

Well I finally saw The Running Man. Not a bad movie at all, I really liked the more direct approach to presenting the ruthlessness of a police state that uses reality type TV to suppress the masses with the gladiatorial games. I thought Arnie was pretty good in this though some of his "zingers" felt a bit off to me as if it was by rote.

Total Recall is definitely better but Kindergarten Cop..ehhhh.....My favorite Arnie comedy is still Twins.

Sadly they're making a sequel called Triplets with Eddie Murphy being the third brother.
