Very! It's Hopkins.... so he makes you forget there's acting going on. Of course, Helen Mirren always plays her roles professionally as well.

      Dredd remake.

This was basically Raid: the redemption for the us. Way better than Stallone's Dredd. I enjoyed it...and I'm weird for thinking crazy Lena Headley was hot in this. But that's how it is.

Seen Oz (3D) this past weekend, not knowing what to expect going into it. I must say I really enjoyed it. Lived up to the hype, good acting, good 3D, nice world, and I really liked the story as well. I'd give it 9/10. FYI Mila Kunis smoking hot.

            Argo - decent

Zero Dark Thirty - decent. Kind of made the soldiers look like insensitive trigger happy jerks though.

The Hobbit - Thought the ending was too abrupt.

I saw Argo a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was a good film and Affleck did a solid job in building the tension of the story. Plus, any film that has Kyle Chandler in it gets an automatic bump up from me; that guy is just a hell of an actor.

Watched Taxi Driver on Tuesday night. This must be the movie all the crazies worship because it does a scarily good job of portraying someone going off the deep end. I enjoyed it, mostly for De Niro's performance as Travis Bickle, which was amazing.

It's crazy to me that this is a nearly 40 year old movie. Aside from the obvious technological aspects, it really doesn't seem like it's that old, and I think that's in large part because of how well written the movie was because it still holds up pretty well today IMO.

Jodie Foster is also really good in this movie.

Check out these two Brazilian movies Elite Squad 1 and Elite Squad 2 if you don't mind reading subtitles. Those movies are awesome.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I know I was supposed to do Starman but well my bandwidth usage for the month is kinda creeping up against me soooo....

I watched The Muppets (2011) and WOW! What a great flick. I really liked how the beginning of the movie felt like an overly sweet 1950s style musical and while they kept that sweetness throughout the film they toned down the fairy tale like vibe to it once they got into the "real world" of Los Angeles. The music really fit well and I have to say there were times it got a little dusty in my room.

The humor was quite good too with the metafictional jokes and the breaking of the 4th wall especially in the first half of the film. I had a good laugh over the whole "travel by map" segment and 80s Robot was pretty funny tracking the other Muppets via his phone modem LOL!

They really did a great job with this movie and it seemed like a labor of love. I like the fact that the plot mirrored that of the original Muppets movie while also adding the context of the muppet characters being "real" as it were. The only problem I have and it has nothing to do with this movie is that it looks like Disney is being a bit lazy with this franchise as the semi-sequel due out next year is also mirroring another Muppet movie. (The Great Muppet Caper) I hope we don't eventually see quasi remakes of the old movies.

Anywho this movie had a great nostalgic pull to it but was very good on its own merits.

                        4 stars.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I was so looking forward to seeing Iron Sky (2012) but I was completely disappointed to the point that I had to turn it off 40 minutes into it. Even though I was watching it essentially for free I thought I was being ripped off.

The concept is actually pretty good (if a bit unrealistic) as the Nazis somehow went to the dark side of the moon and established a colony there since 1945. They discover a US moon landing and capture one of the astronauts who happens to be a black guy. The Nazis think it's the beginning of an invasion by the earth and thus make plans to invade the earth themselves.

Now, as I said the concept is a bit unrealistic which makes it ripe for ripe for comedy but the people making this movie went WAY overboard and turned it from being a fun flick to something so campy as to be ridiculously stupid. The movie looks like a joint European-American production and it kinda shows as the parts in English sounds stilted as hell whereas the scenes in German are played serious but having the characters do ridiculous things. It's almost as if it tried to have it both ways in terms of tone.

The attempts at pop culture/political satire is also a major fail. The president of the US is basically a Sarah Palin type whereas her military advisor is some leather clad woman who ends up having a scene that tries to be like the Hitler scene in Downfall which turned into a meme a couple years ago. The whole screeching by this woman about it being the effing USA etc etc was supposed to be funny but came off as very tired and stupid.

So yeah, I can't give a complete review score because I gave up on it 40 minutes into the movie but I somehow doubt it'd get much better. Needless to say I was bitterly disappointed. It certainly wasn't what I expected.

So to wash that experience out of my mind I turned to a filmed adaptation of a Broadway one man play that Christopher Plummer did on John Barrymore simply titled Barrymore (2011). This isn't for everybody but I really liked it. Plummer was excellent in this and he really had full command of the stage. I did feel that they went a little overboard with the angst and connecting the Shakespearean aspect to Barrymore's life to the point of bludgeoning the idea with an axe.

Nonetheless as a study of the life, career and mind of the Great John Barrymore it works. The material gets bogged down in the Shakespeare (Barrymore is supposed to be rehearsing for the role of Richard the III in his return to the stage) about halfway through but once you get past that it goes down well. Like I said this isn't for everyone but if you want to see a great actor completely chewing the scenery like an animal well then this would be worthwhile to watch.

                            I give this 2 1/2 stars.

Sand Sharks, Super Cyclone, and Mega Piranha. Wouldn't really suggest any of them lol. Unless you like Brooke Hogan in a bikini, then go for Sand Sharks. But even at that, it's like maybe 3 minutes, so don't worry about it.

I did enjoy them because I like watching crappy low-budget sci-fi movies, but from a fan of good movies, all three are absolutely awful.

Sand Sharks was ridiculous. Watched it on Netflix the other day.

Also watched all three Tremors movies - also ridiculous, but they're cheesy movies at their finest.

Watched Quarantine 2 the other day. Hated the first one (though, I think I need to rewatch it again), and this one was your run of the mill trying-to-be-a-horror movie. Mediocre at best.
