Re: What movies have you seen recently?

    Stand by all Networks (1942)

    Plot Summary

n 1941, before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Ben Fallon (John Beal), radio reporter and commentator, constantly uncovers evidence of spy-ring sabotage to the discomfiture of the police and the government. Ben is interested in Lela Cramer (Margaret Hayes), amateur flyer working for the radio station Ben broadcasts for and, at the request of Grant Neally (Pierre Watkin), his boss, asks Lela to give a job to Frances Prescott (Florence Rice). After several U.S. ships are torpedoed by German submarines, a few miles out in the Atlantic close to New York City, Ben begins to suspect a station employee may be feeding information to the Nazi agents.
That's a pretty good summation of what was a slightly better than average World War II propaganda type film. I won't go into great detail but there is one HUGE plot hole/contrivance that nearly sinks the movie as Ben wants the government to take action against saboteurs etc etc but when he finds out the names of those involved in the spy/saboteur ring rather than give the information to the government he wants to blab all about it on the radio which would tip off said saboteurs. Actually, that has a bit of a prophetic ring to it when it comes to the journalism profession because many people feel that journalists often go for the big scoop often to the detriment of government/national security.

What this film does well in it's short 1 hr+ running time is keep the action going so despite some not so great acting the whole proceeding has great gusto. The guy that plays Ben Fallon really comes off as a bit of a punk though as he's like a bull in a china shop with his wanting to be a great crusader for the American Way. There's also a scene where he basically calls Frances Prescott a whore by insinuating she only got her job by sleeping around with the boss! When she runs away in disgust he's all confused as to why she'd do that....The man came off as a total boor.

The mystery of who the saboteur is was pretty easy to solve even for someone who can be a bit dense like me so in that sense there wasn't great mystery but as I said before the movie moves at a fast pace. There is also some good comedic bits with Fallon's personal secretary who's helping him on the case. She looked like a frumpier version of Ann Miller if you can imagine that.

Anywho, it's a good time waster and was a double edged warning in that it tried to wake up an isolationist America to the idea that the war would come to them but also a warning of people becoming so paranoid of saboteurs and the like that all it takes is a list of names to make innocent people seem like traitors to the nation a la the Red Scare of the 1950s.

Just finished Lincoln. It's an amazing movie. I hope this isn't a spoiler, but he dies at the end. And I started to tear up when his son started screaming.

Brave - I really enjoyed this despite the movie not unfolding at all how I thought it would. It's a very nice twist to the expectation the trailers created. That said, it felt more like a Disney movie than a Pixar film and being a fan of both I thought it was great. Not sure I would rank this above some recent golden animated films, but I think it certainly stands on its own nonetheless.

I feel the exact same as you about 'Brave'. I did enjoy it as well, but not 'classic' status like 'Incredibles' or 'Toy Story.' I may add 'Wreck it Ralph' as a classic, too. I was surprised how much I loved that film.

To be fair, who are we to assume the story would have involved his assassination? I thought it was going to end when he was walking out of that corridor.

Let's be honest, here: people don't like spoilers.

                      --------------------------------------------------------------

                      Chernobyl Diaries

Every so often, a gripping telling of something made up of horror, suspense, and mystery elements is exactly what a film needs. No Hollywood crap, no relief humor, and no nonsense. That's what this film kind of felt like. Was that this style at its best? Absolutely not, but it definitely held a style of its own.

The cinematography was pretty dazzling for this film. Every frame had impressive depth, and while the colors were intentionally unsaturated, different hues and tones stood out with good detail. The camera work was interesting. It was like watching one of those POV films, only no character was filming (like an invisible person following them with an invisible camera and they don't know about it). Obviously that's how most films are, but this one was very handheld and shot in a home video style.

The one tough aspect most crowds won't like about a film like this is that it is a bit too "doom and gloom" at its very core. In other words, no matter the final resolution of the film, you sit through most of it telling yourself that the characters appear to be stuck in a no-win situation. Audiences like the feeling of options, of a way out. This movie doesn't feel like it presents the characters with many, and most of their reactions are natural and not too "Why did they do that?" cliched like many horror movies have a problem with.

Overall, the R-rating was mostly used for the amount of F-bombs, and considering the low budget, I think the crew did really well shooting a film that didn't have too many unnecessary, gory, or expository (not in the way you think) moments. I think it left enough ambiguous and off-screen events that we could leave the rest up to our imagination.

It finished a bit too abruptly for my taste, and by that time I didn't really consider this to be a very good movie by any means, but it was an interesting watch and gave me another chance to see them use Chernobyl in a film since A Good Day to Die Hard and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Hey man, Russia is cool you know.

Had a bit of 90's movies night yesterday. Watched Airborne with Seth Green and Jack Black, Jurassic Park, and all three Mighty Duck movies. Watched those movies a ton when I was younger, but hadn't seen Airborne in probably 15 years. Still remembered most of it somehow.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2. A fun ride. Definitely dark in the same vein as the live action movies.

Man On A Ledge. The script was kinda weak - the lines had nothing of great appeal. BUT, with that said, I found it a bit interesting. A unique story-line that was semi-fun to watch. But if I had to rate this move overall, I'd give it about a 4.0 out of 10. Once you've watched it there's no reason to do so again.
