What're y'alls' opinions on Tom Hanks as an actor? Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Castaway have me inclined to put him towards the top.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Regarding Cruise: You guys pretty much nailed it. I will say that he knows his niche and generally sticks to it. He isn't the best actor in the world but when he stretches himself a bit he can bring it like he did in A Few Good Men and Collateral. He's generally "good" though most of his roles lately aren't up my alley.

As for Tom Hanks? I think he's a GREAT actor just for Forrest Gump and The Green Mile. I do think his last few roles have diminished him a bit though it was a guty move on his part to try a comedy after being strictly a dramatic actor for so long. (Larry Crowne (2011)) I believe the movie did poorly at the box office so the paying public can't see him in a comedic role anymore which is a shame because that's how he got big (er pardon the pun) in the first place.

Top notch actor and a couple upcoming films of his have my interest especially Saving Mr. Banks where he's going to play Walt Disney.

Apollo 13 is my favorite Hanks film, I think. Great actor. Catch Me If You Can is another awesome performance of his.

For years as a kid I considered Tom Hanks my favorite actor.

I think he's a great actor that is somewhat in an awkward stage in his acting career. He isn't old enough to get the old man roles I think he could succeed in, but he isn't young enough to play the roles he so brilliantly made real.

In time. He will make a comeback.

I saw a trailer for a movie where he plays Walt Disney, seemed like one of those roles that he'll play extremely well.

I agree with this wholeheartedly, give him 3-4 years and he'll start playing the kind of roles that Morgan Freeman usually gets and doing them VERY well.

I consider Tom Hanks to be one of the top actors ever. He has and continues to have box office draw and is really in the top tier as far as acting goes - he has great range being successful in both comedic and high dramatic roles which is something that most actors cannot do successfully. For me, though, all his performances are weighted at the core with a real human warmth that feels genuine that the majority of actors simply cannot project much less have.

Also you gotta bring up A League of Their Own.

I really like most of Tom Hanks' work. He's so versatile. Remember "Road to Perdition" too?

Ahh...but let's not forget his comic roots! One of the funniest moments in cinema history, and even works out of context:

I loved Road to Perdition. I had actually forgotten about that one and The Green Mile. Glad I brought this up, I've been reminded of some really fantastic films that I haven't seen in too long.

That's the mark of a truly great actor; he's played so many great roles that the list just goes on.

Yea, I was just talkin about this with my family and my mom mentioned a couple, Turner and Hooch, and Bosom Buddies.

Has anyone seen Matthew Mcconaughey's recent film Mud? I'd like to check it out. After watching Killer Joe a little while ago, I have a new appreciation for Mcconaughey, seeing him convincingly play a role I'd never pictured him in.

It was quite easily one of my favorite movies this year.

                                Beasts of the Southern Wild

Beautifully shot. A really nice movie to look at. Story managed to keep my full attention throughout the film. Perfect length at around 90 minutes. Hate when a film necessarily runs for 2 hours.

I remember the actress who plays the little girl receiving much praise for the job she did, and deservedly so, but I thought the actor who played her father did just as good a job.
