    Murders in the Zoo (1933)

Well this was almost a month late as it's a horror movie LOL! There's nothing scary about it but there's definitely some tension and grisly goings on from a guy having his mouth sewed shut, a woman being eaten alive by alligators, lions fighting each other (for real, not staged) and a close up shot of a snake bite.

Lionel Atwill plays a sadistic animal hunter/zoo owner who will stop at nothing to get rid of any man who has eyes on his wife. He really dominates the proceedings and it's a tour de force acting job as he's a pretty despicable a-hole. The rest of the cast is uniformly good including good comic relief from Charlie Ruggles as the PR man for the zoo. Randolph Scott is the zoo doc in a small but key role in the film and he does it well. Really though, this movie is best remembered for its violence/grisly images and Atwill's measured and slimy performance.

      Watched Elysium last night.

About half as good as District 9. Tried to do too much and just didn't have the heart or impact that District 9 did.

        Weird Science
Another trip down Nostalgia Ave. for me and the misses. Definitely the weakest of the John Hughes films from the 80's. It's not a complete waste, though. Kelly LeBrock is smokin' and even though both were younger, you could see the star potential in Robert Downey and Bill Paxton. I think this is a film that could benefit from a re-make. Beef up the story, make the plot a little more realistic and you've got something to work with.

Weird Science is one of those movies where I go "That's a John Hughes film?!?" It just seems so atypical of his movies though i'm speaking from hazy memories as I haven't seen it in years.

His dialogue is easily distinguishable in the film, as is the Chicago-area setting. Not saying Hughes was the best storyteller ever, but most of his films at least had a plot and story that you could buy into. With Weird Science, it just felt like he made a movie where he did things just to do them.

District 9 was horrible. If this movie is half as good it must suck.

Continuing on with the Randolph Scott survey of films....BTW I'll be watching a ton of movies for the foreseeable future as i'm holding off on my other great hobby til I fill in some holes in that area in a couple weeks or so.

                  Anywho....

                  Man of the Forest (1933)

Well...This wasn't the greatest. At the very least it contained most of the cast from The Thundering Herd so the acting is uniformly good in this but the story left a bit to be desired.

That being said there are some eccentricities and a couple interesting scenes. There's also a pretty violent/grisly scene involving a mountain lion near the end of the movie that was shocking for 1933.

                  I give this 1 1/2 *

Difference of opinion, I guess. The whole thing wasn't great, but I really liked it much the same.

Enjoyed them both, saw Elysium twice in the theater. District 9 is great, love that style of movie.

Also a late props for that Runaway review, grew up to that movie... homing bullets and acid robot spiders, what's not to love as a kid.

Easily the best documentary I've ever seen. I first saw it on Netflix and I was attack by those pesky onion slicing ninjas at the end of the movie. I went out and bought it, and I still get weepy eyed at the end. Movie is outstanding, and you really should see it, even if you know nothing about F1 (which is where I was, just knew the basics of the basics.)

How long is the doc? I've heard it was outstanding but this review makes me want to check it out.

                              To the Last Man (1933)

                              HUZZAH!

Now THIS was a good movie! It owes a lot to the Hatfield/McCoy feud but there's other elements to it. The story isn't anything amazing but the rawness and brutality of the proceedings give it a depth of feeling and nuance that makes this easily the best of the early Randolph Scott films i've seen so far. I have a lot more to say about this in my blog but needless to say it's a very good flick

Apart from the distractingly low-budget, junior-high skilled basketball scenes the movie is charming and strikes the same chords as a lot of coming of age 80s films. While the surface moral tale is about being yourself the base of the story is really about conformity and assimilation which is a direct contrast to what they're ultimately trying to do.
My daughter and I watched this just the other week, she's finally getting old enough to watch stuff like this. Brought back some memories. I think I told my daughter 5 times, never try to surf on the hood of a car. Should be common sense, but we used to do that when we were 16, probably got the idea from this movie.

This was a typical movie we'd pop in on Friday night until the parents went to bed and then Porky's and the like got popped into the VCR.

I like watching movies like this, more because it brings back great memories than watching the movie itself.
