Re: What movies have you seen recently?

    Slightly Scarlet (1956)

This....was an AWESOME movie! Out of all the color "noirs" i've been watching lately this one has just about everything you need in a noir and ranks up there with Body Heat (1981) as the best of the color noirs i've seen. Now this isn't a perfect movie as there are some flaws but it's pretty damn good.

    Plot Summary:

Kleptomaniac Dorothy Lyons (Arlene Dahl) is paroled from prison in custody of her sister June, (Rhonda Fleming) secretary to "reform" political candidate Frank Jansen. (Kent Taylor) Ben Grace, (John Payne) associate of crime boss Sol Caspar, (Ted De Corsia) sees this as a way to smear Jansen's campaign. But after falling out with Caspar, Ben tries to help June, who he begins to fall for. Sexy Dorothy also has a yen for Ben. June is reluctantly forced to go along with Ben's schemes, but there may be more to these than meets the eye...
That's a pretty good non spoiler summary and I don't want to give too much away as this movie is available to buy (though probably easiest to get through TCM rather than Amazon) however there are some things I want to talk about.

First of all this movie is wonderfully shot by John Alton who did a bang up job with the cinematography as you'd often see characters in full shadow and the male characters would wear darker clothes while the two leading ladies are in very bright clothing and their home is lit up with garish reds and whites. Hell, even the design of the home has phallic symbols which ties into one of the aspects of the movie which i'll get into in a second. It's all very masterfully done to the point that even if you don't like the plot of the movie it's still something to see just for the cinematography and technique.

As for the phallic symbols tying into an aspect of the movie well Dorothy is pretty much unhinged as she's loco but she mixes her insanity and kleptomania with nymphomania as she wants Ben to herself and even goes after Sol towards the end of the film. This is something that's not really explored much which is understandable given when the film was made but the relationship between her need to steal and her sick mind with the need for sex is something that is worth following through. I daresay a writer like Joe Eszterhas (of Basic Instinct fame) would have a field day exploring that relationship.

The acting is quite good in this but herein lies another missed opportunity as the love triangles aren't developed much between June, Janssen and Ben as well as the June, Ben, Dorothy triangle. The latter does get more play than the former. Rhonda Fleming aside from being a pretty good actress was DAMN easy on the eyes:

(low grade screen grab Dahl, Payne and Fleming)

The dialogue in this movie works well with the male actors spouting tough lines of dialogue in the darkness and the violence in this is more lurid and blatant than most movies of the time including a scene where a woman is basically slapped around.

This is an excellent movie worth watching and I give it *** stars.

I gotta tip my hat to SPTO for his fearless plumbing of the 40's and 50's Hollywood. Lots of films I've never even heard of.

If you're not actually a critic, you should look into it or start a blog. Could make some money doing what you love and you really seem to be building up quite a mental library of films. Have you seen everything on the AFI Top 100?

Also, I have a little book recommendation for you:

      http://www.amazon.com/Film-Club-Memo...ords=film+club

I enjoyed it a lot, and it made me appreciate (and watch and re-watch) some films I'd yet seen.

The Rocketeer - Girlfriend had never seen it and considering she's a WWII "buff" I figured it'd be a no-brainer. She liked it. Of course. Its a great film and one of my favorite comic book movies. Has a nice sense of adventure with little flashes of action that are grounded fairly well. Jennifer Connolly is always fun to look at. Alan Arkin has some of the laziest, driest deliveries and its amazing. And of course a villainous Tim Dalton.

Pete's Dragon - This is some ****ed up **** through and through. Its quite some nice character, but damn if this movie isn't just kind of weird without even mentioning the dragon stuff. I probably don't need to see this again for another 15-20 years.

I'm familiar with Mr. Gilmour though haven't read this book. Thanks for the recommendation.

As for the AFI 100? Let's see: I've seen 68 out of the 100

As for blogging? I don't really have the work ethic though I enjoy putting up my reviews on here. The summaries all come from IMDB but the actual review is all mine. Maybe I should look into some kind of film review job for an underground paper or something though.

          Thanks for the kind words!

I really enjoyed The Rocketeer when I saw it (I saw it in the theatres) it's got the right mix of pulpiness and fun of adventure that you often get from 1930s serials. Jennifer Connolly was cast to perfection as she just oozed that sexiness that the Jenny character called for. I haven't seen the movie in years but i'm sure it holds up.

As for Pete's Dragon? That flick freaked me out as a kid. I think everybody involved were on some heavy drugs at the time.

Man of Steel - 10/10. Absolutely exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to see it again.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - 7.5/10. Not sure what all of the bad/below average reviews were for. Nothing about this movie was to be taken seriously, and it did it's job as a fun summer action flick. Cool seeing an alternate and fantastical take on history with such a well known name.

Weird, funny, quirky, indie as ****, all words that describe this movie. And I kind of loved it. Aubrey Plaza is great, Jake Johnson is great, whoever plays the crazy time traveller guy is great. It's the most unique movie I've seen in a long time.

The time traveler guy is Mark Duplass. He's becoming of my favorite actors as of late. He's in a movie with Emily Blunt called Your Sister's Sister that's also pretty great. I think Mike Birbiglia has a small role as well.

Mama- 7.5/10 ending was very weird. Could've added more suspense.

The Purge -7/10 short movie. Started off really good IMO. Ended abruptly and awkwardly . Very Predictable. Plot didn't make any sense as story advanced.

Abraham Vampire Movie? 6.5/10 decent got a little boring and agonizing to watch

Haunted House 8/10 Marlon Wayans had me crying lol. Movie was a bit silly but not as over the top as the scary movies.

A SPTO special here since it's from 1932.
One of them there "talkie pictures" that must've been all the rage back then.
It was quite good and could use a shot for shot remake or update of some sort. Apparently the original film is lost so no hope of a high quality release.

I watched To Kill A Mockingbird last night. First time I've seen it since High School, 20 years ago or so. Such a great classic film. Gregory Peck was brilliant!

                                Plot Summary

Through the eyes of "Scout," a feisty six-year-old tomboy, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD carries us on an odyssey through the fires of prejudice and injustice in 1932 Alabama. Presenting her tale first as a sweetly lulling reminiscence of events from her childhood, the narrator draws us near with stories of daring neighborhood exploits by she, her brother "Jem," and their friend "Dill." Peopled with a cast of eccentrics, Maycomb ("a tired and sleepy town") finds itself the venue of the trial of Tom Robinson, a young black man falsely accused of raping an ignorant white woman. Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem's widowed father and a deeply principled man, is appointed to defend Tom for whom a guilty verdict from an all-white jury is a foregone conclusion. Juxtaposed against the story of the trial is the children's hit and run relationship with Boo Radley, a shut-in who the children and Dill's Aunt Rachel suspect of insanity and who no one has seen in recent history. Cigar-box treasures, found in the knot hole of a tree near the ramshackle Radley house, temper the children's judgment of Boo. "You never know someone," Atticus tells Scout, "until you step inside their skin and walk around a little." But fear keeps them at a distance until one night, in streetlight and shadows, the children confront an evil born of ignorance and blind hatred and must somehow find their way home.
