Re: What movies have you seen recently?
He's certainly getting older, but I would say that he is young. Compared to the likes of the "other great actors" we would be referring to.
He was definitely younger back during The Departed, but he can still play a "young man" well (Gatsby).Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Now You See Me - Really enjoyed this, lots of twist and turns and not all of them predictable.
Riddick - This was a let down for me after loving both of the other movies. I was just never really able to get into it.Texas Rangers/Saints/LSU/Tottenham Hotspur

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Dallas Buyer's Club - I need to watch Her still and I'll see Nebraska/Philomena at some point, maybe, so this one just about wraps up my "Best Picture Noms" watching campaign. Real solid movie. Incredible performances from MM and Leto. Strong support cast, too.
Damn good year for Best Picture Nominations (I think it's pretty easily my strongest year since they switched to the expanded format). Wolf still wins for me, with DBC falling in fourth behind Wolf/12 Years/Am Hustle and just ahead of Captain Phillips and Gravity.
People say Hollywood is only full of remakes and sequels and ****, and there are a lot of those....but this year's crop proves that there are some damn, damn good movies out there still.Comment

Argo, I liked it. The problem with movies based on a true story is that even when they try to make the end scene climactic, you already know what has happened if you studied History.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

The way I see it for True Story movies is if they make me want to look up the actual history of it after then they did a decent job.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I've been so lazy with watching movies lately due to a number of things that I sat down and watched one this afternoon. I'll post a review sometime tonight. Anywho
The Left Handed Gun (1958)
This movie is one of the many tellings of the Billy The Kid legend and this one stars a miscast Paul Newman as Billy and John Dehner playing Pat Garrett. (excellently too if I may say so) This is one of two movies that were originally intended for James Dean that Newman was slotted in. IMO Newman was better in the other one (Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)) but he does pretty well all things considered. Newman channels a lot of Dean's style in the movie and you almost forget he's way too old for the part.
The movie is directed by Arthur Penn who did Bonnie and Clyde from 1967 and like that movie this film has things to say. It really is a "rebel without a cause" for the 1870s as Billy the Kid is presented as a troubled young man who has a simplistic morality that doesn't jive with the law and morality of the time. In fact, in earlier tellings of the story Billy would be portrayed as heroic for going after the crooked sheriff and locals who killed his employer but here Billy is shown to be seeking answers which may be emotional satisfying in some ways but which are wrong.
Pat Garrett is presented as almost a father figure to Billy and really it's Garrett whose the only person he really listens to but Billy's desire to avenge his employer's death gets in the way of that and he does something that pushes Garrett over the edge and become the new sheriff going after Billy. The movie is moody and sometimes a bit too slow. I also found that Penn and Gore Vidal (whose play this is based on) spend too much time showing Billy and his two compadres as drunken idiots which takes away from the narrative. The movie IMO doesn't really begin to click until Garrett is offered the sheriff's job to get Billy before things get worse.
So i'd say this is a solid little movie with some pacing issues but the acting is generally good and the moral ambiguities hinted at make for a good examination of the Western genre.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Seems like it's always been tough to find screen time and a well written storyline when you have so many high end actors in the same flick, no matter what the era.Comment

Had to take my little brother to see the Lego Movie.
I was expecting to fall asleep, but it turned out to be a brilliant little movie. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really enjoyed a Lego animated movie.Khalabeeb - Tony Henderson

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Gravity Not bad. I really wish I would have seen it in 3D at the theater as I suspect it was meant to be seen that way. I was a little shocked that this is getting buzz to win Best Picture. See below to find out why.
Dallas Buyers Club Fantastic movie with some really great performances. I really think this was the best of the movies I've see for Best Picture. Haven't seen 12 Years A Slave yet but I really enjoyed this flick.GT: Herkyalert
