Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I think it's best when I see it as a psychological drama and not a horror movie. By horror movie's standards, I was disappointed. By the former (besides the kid), I was enthralled.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I watched a couple of so-so thrillers from the '80s over the last little while:
Jagged Edge (1985): Jeff Bridges plays a manipulative newspaper publisher who's accused of murdering his wife and retains the services of a guilt stricken lawyer who worked with the DA who is also a manipulative bastard who has ambitions for political office and will do anything to win cases. The tension is built up pretty well though it ends up being one of those movies where we know who the killer is but the main character doesn't fully know until the end. The film has pretty good performances by Glenn Close, Peter Coyote and Robert Loggia. I thought Bridges was rather underwhelming. This was at a point in his career where he didn't really have the gravitas to make a somewhat bland character on paper seem better on the screen and the film suffers for it. This movie was the first part of writer Joe Eszterhas' "San Francisco" trilogy. The other two films were Basic Instinct and Jade.
The Bedroom Window (1987): This movie tries to homage Hitchcock but it doesn't have the directorial flair and while I get the casting of Steve Guttenberg being the "everyday guy" like James Stewart was for Hitch it just doesn't come across convincingly. Guttenberg is a guy who does well with comedy but he's not very good in a dramatic role. That being said, the setup is actually quite good with Guttenberg having an affair with his boss' wife who sees an attempted murder on the street from Guttenberg's bedroom window. Guttenberg takes it upon himself to report the crime in her stead and everything goes haywire. Elizabeth McGovern is excellent as the woman who was almost killed and whom helps Guttenberg as things spiral out of control for him. The coincidences pile up quite a bit as well which stretches credulity but it's not a bad investment of nearly 2 hrs.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Johnny Handsome (1989): Pretty interesting crime/revenge flick. Director Walter Hill was going for a noir feel though it didn't really come across very well as it had a strictly grimy B-movie crime film vibe to it. Basically Mickey Rourke plays a disfigured man who is into criminal activity and is pretty much looked after by his best friend and big brother figure Mikey. They plot out a heist and bring in a couple of low lives in the form of Rafe and Sunny (Lance Henriksen and Ellen Barkin respectively) who double crosses Mikey and Johnny leading to Mikey being killed. Johnny goes to jail but winds up in a hospital after being knifed and is talked into an experimental cosmetic surgery by a kindly doctor played by Forrest Whittaker. Throw in Elizabeth McGovern who becomes a quasi love interest and Morgan Freeman as sardonic, jaded cop keeping tabs on Johnny and you have an interesting flick.
Director Hill used some very interesting shots along with great editing in the early portion of the film to push the setup along and also to speed up the process before getting to the meat and potatoes of Johnny's revenge plot. The movie moves at a good clip and they make excellent use of the seedy areas of New Orleans to great effect. Everyone gives good performances though some rather over the top but it fit the overall tenor of the film Ellen Barkin's character is one irredeemable bitch in this one to the point that when she does get it in the end it's quite satisfying. One last note and this is purely cosmetic but this is my 2nd movie seeing Elizabeth McGovern. She really seemed like an actress that excelled in tough cookie kinda roles. I'm a little surprised that she seemingly faded away. (edit: n/m just looked her up on wiki and she has been on Downton Abbey. Good for her!) Anywho onto the cosmetic part, she had a topless scene in this flick and a silhouetted shower scene in The Bedroom Window. Her breasts looked a little bigger in this flick, maybe she had some work done? "shrugs". I know I know, such a guy thing to notice so here's something else. She REALLY laid the N'Awlins accent on thick in this movie to the point of distraction.
All in all, recommended if you like grimy B-movie type entertainment. Here's the trailer in case you're interested:

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I was flicking through the premium channels last night and caught part of Ocean's 13. And I love that franchise. And liked the plot of them. Bunch of stars getting together to rob someone. What are some movies like this? Doesn't even need to have a star studded cast. Just another good heist movie.

Tower Heist
Inside Man (sort of)
Inception
Fast Five
Other heist films I'd recommend are The Town and The Bank Job, but they are nothing like Ocean's Eleven.
And not a heist film, but Lucky Number Slevin is a movie where everyone is pretty much on the same page with each other when it comes to conversational dialogue, very much like Ocean's Eleven. It is a very "cool" film in that regard.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

I've seen The Town and Tower Heist. And I'll check the rest out. You know if any are on Netflix?
