We saw The Shallows this weekend too.

It's a shark movie. You pretty much know what you're getting since the shark is confined to the water. They did a pretty good job with that limitation in mind.

CGI of the shark was pretty good, just a moment or two where it's obviously not real.

Blake Lively is a beauty, but she gets beat down a bit in this movie. Cherish the first 20 or so minutes. Lol

Blake Lively is an amazing looking woman. I did watch Age of Adeline (sp?) recently and actually quite liked it, and she looks great 99% of the movie

Criminal (Kevin Costner). This falls under the "I wanted to like this more" category. The concept of the movie has been done before but this still could have been good considering the cast. The execution was pretty poor and the main criminal (Jordi Molla), though we don't see him all that much, was pretty melodramatic and amateur in his portrayal. Additionally, Costner in this role was pretty questionable. This should have had a different actor cast for this personality type. Even Gary Oldman fans will cringe at the lines they gave him.

        Yep, don't waste your time.

          Sleeping with Other People

Pretty good romantic comedy. Likeable cast with some funny dialogue. Single complaint of mine was the casting of Adam Scott as Dr. Matthew Sobvechik (Gynecologist). It's not that he did a poor job. In fact he was solid, but I couldn't help but wonder how Andy Daly would have done in that role. Started as a random thought that became something I was unable to shake the entire movie.

Not watching the whole thing, but, essentially, Americans are more discerning about the production quality of movies. Doesn't this date back to the cheesy Godzilla flicks (let's face it....those sucked)?

I dunno, there's been a lot of cheese doled out by American cinema. Let's not put the burden on Ol' Godzilla (who's now officially a citizen of Japan) Anywho i'll watch this video and give my thoughts later.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

                  Sorry for the double post

First, I still don't think the Godzilla comparison is quite apt. Hollywood saw the success of the original Godzilla film and then softened the message and inserted Raymond Burr into it. As the series progressed it definitely got goofier and was more aimed at the Japanese zeitgeist which allowed for American producers to slap on a completely silly and over the top dub.

This is quite different in that Hollywood is taking the P.T. Barnum approach to China, Russia and the emerging markets by sending them tentpole/well known properties and gimmicking them up with universal childish humor and crap like 3D which is HUGE in China. Obviously, this is the lazy way out of trying to get more profits as 80% of the movie business is coming overseas.

The problem is, this is only going to work for so long. in short, they're buying themselves 10 years overseas at the risk of completely DESTROYING the domestic market to the point that the physical cinema experience will be replaced by digital downloads. (legal and otherwise) This is classic myopic behavior and seeing that they're killing themselves slowly makes me happy that i'm more comfortable watching older movies these days.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

She basically said we're seeing reboots to series from the 80's and 90's because international markets (specifically China) banned those movies from entering their country then. Now that they're more open, these reboots are their first introduction to these characters.

Concerning the fact there's a limited supply of franchises to reboot, she says that Hollywood has never worried about the long term, only what makes money now.

                    Seems right.

It's something that's plaguing society as a whole. It's always been an issue but it seems so much more prominent these days.

Also, her points seem pretty ignorant to me. Inflated sense of self worth coming through with those explanations.

Summer blockbusters have always been cheesy, explosion filled films. That's what works. When a big budget cheesy film that doesn't rely on story does well, it gets a sequel. Rinse and repeat. It happens in video games too. See: Uncharted.

I dunno, these are points she is using via support from a book written about the business. You can't deny that the domestic movie business has been in huge decline.

I'm not saying it hasn't. I'm saying she assigning too much self importance to things that aren't true.

Saying "were getting bad movies because foreigners" is objectively different than saying "hey people aren't going to movies as much"

Perhaps she could have tied them together better? The focus has shifted from a primary American audience to a more globally friendly one due to America's drop in attendance and market share.
