Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Call Northside 777 (1948): One of the great films of the Hollywood System days put out by 20th Century Fox. This is actually based on a true story of a reporter who is pretty much pushed by his newspaper editor to look into the case of a man who was thrown in jail for life for killing a cop 11 years earlier. I actually think with some updating but staying true to the facts that this could be a pretty good flick if remade right. The movie has a documentary feel for about the first 10 minutes but afterwards it turns into a very well done investigative/noir type piece.

Jimmy Stewart is fantastic as the cynical reporter who thinks this is all a waste of time but as he gets deeper and deeper into the case he realizes that hey, this Wiacek (Richard Conte) guy is innocent! Conte isn't in the film for very long but he really comes off impressively as a guy who knows he's innocent and wants get out but he will NOT be used as a publicity tool for Stewart's newspaper. Everyone in this film were fantastic in their roles and it's a film you should seek out if you haven't seen it before.

Just saw Ghostbusters in 3D. It was actually pretty good.
It might not translate as well in 2D but if the Oscar's give out awards solely on 3D visual effects,
this one should get at least nominated, and probably even win.
I say that not having seen a movie in 3D since Up back in '09, so I don't really know if Ghostbusters
has done it better than anyone else, but this is what seeing a movie at the theater should feel like,
as opposed to seeing it at home or a smaller screen, i.e. a fun and different experience.
I wanted to see Force Awakens in 3D but didn't. I only saw it at the theater 6 times lol.
Now I really wish I had seen it a 7th time, in 3D.

Finally saw the notorious French horror film Martyrs. Definitely hardcore and not for the weak of stomach. Interesting premise, IMO. Not an easy movie to watch but if you like offbeat horror films, this one fits the bill.

          Secret Life of Pets.

No where near the tier of the top Pixar movies, or How to Train Your Dragon, Zootopia, Big Hero 6 and such.

Somewhere below those. It was good. I laughed. It just wasn't great.

            Now You See Me 2

Probably more entertaining than the original. Now that I can submit to the fact that this franchise hit the ground running being all style and no substance, I was able to sit back and watch "magic" happen, or whatever the heck it is I was watching. Like the first one, it wants to settle in and explain every clever twist and turn that it has. I think the first film is more cohesive and a more compelling one big plot twist, but this one has great individual scenes, layered one onto another.

For the most part, it kind of plays out like a Broadway musical but without the singing: something that seems like an unrealistic set of things that happen for the sake of drama and theater. It's like the characters are playing a nice fun game together, no matter the stakes (even death). I mean really when you sit back and think about the motivations and schemes, a lot of them really don't make sense. Good thing that's not why I like these movie though.

I was disappointed that two bigger known cast members from the first film didn't appear for this one (they wrote one in as to why, and while I understand the other one probably wouldn't make much sense at all for this one I was just saddened they both weren't included). Daniel Radcliffe and Jay Chou didn't exactly fill that void as needed (plus another cast member who was also in the first film, but for spoiler reasons I won't mention the specific role I'm referring to), but I think that Lizzy Caplan was an awesome inclusion.

I dig the tricks that have more to do with practicality than theatricality, but both work just fine for me. This movie has ridiculous moments, and the writer/director are well aware of it and use it at its higher function. Don't know how much this drew in the box office, but I hope that a third one comes out for sure.

This one is one of my favorite of that genre of films. I think they are doing a crappy American remake of it. French/original version is really good in that genre.

Have you seen High Tension and Frontier(s)?

High Tension is pretty solid and Frontier(s) kicked my ***

                The Legend of Tarzan.

Well cast and a pretty good movie I would watch again.

I've only ever seen Alexander Skarsgard in True Blood (judge me), but he was a pretty good fit for Tarzan and obviously I'm a fan of Margot Robbie.

Also thought Samuel L Jackson's character was pretty funny and didn't feel as out of place as I had expected.

I really appreciated their approach to Tarzan's origins story and this movie was pretty fresh and I'm sure it helped that I saw it in theaters.

This was actually pretty darn funny and utilized Melissa McCarthy in a way that wasn't grating or annoying 20 minutes into the film. I feel like the trailers did a terrible job of marketing the film because this was a really fun, enjoyable popcorn flick with a great cast.

I saw Ghostbusters. I honestly think it's awful. I posted in the film's thread about it but I'm glad people on here liked it.

I saw High Tension and like a lot of folks I found the ending to make no sense and kind of spoil what had been a pretty good thriller up to that point.

                          short: very good!

longer: This is a sci-fi movie without a lot of sci-fi. Somebody who doesn't like the genre can totally enjoy the movie. I happen to love sci-fi so it didn't matter anyway.

The movie is interesting immediately which I appreciate. Things are happening and your wondering why and who these people are and it's very effective.

Very good acting, very unique set of characters and plot. I really liked the direction and cinematography.

Potential turn-off for some: it's not fast paced, but it shouldn't be and if it was it would ruin it. BUT I know there are a lot of ADD type's out there so don't say I didn't warn you.

Inside is pretty alright. There's really just a couple scenes that I remember sticking out but they definitely go the full mile. Id imagine it's tough for a woman to watch.
