Re: What movies have you seen recently?
King Richard
This was a pretty solid movie. Will Smith is great as are the two girls who played Venus and Serena. I am just slightly younger then them and remember when they seemed to come out of nowhere in the tennis world. It was nice getting a backstory. Very entertaining.
Eternals
Thought this was good as well. I'm pretty easy to entertain when it comes to Marvel for what it's worth. The visuals were amazing. It's been awhile since I've went to the theaters. Story may have been a little rough around the edges but they were trying to pack in a massive amount of backstory into it. Regardless I left quite entertained and that's really all that matters to me in the end.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Saw this a few weeks ago on Disney+. Again it's Marvel so I'm biased but I really liked it. Fight scenes were amazing!!! Story went from street level to fantasy world pretty quickly but I didn't hate it. Thought Simu Liu and Awkwafina were great together and the comedy hit for me as well. Just a fun watch. Probably would have been better at the theater but oh well. Oh and Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu was pretty damn amazing. Really felt for him towards the end. Another great villain.Comment

Got halfway through Red Notice and turned it off. I like the three main actors, but just not together in this movie.
I'm looking for a dark hunting a serial killer movie like The Little Things. Which I enjoyed very much.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Saw Ghostbusters: Afterlife last Monday and thought it was pretty good. We knew from the trailer that it wouldn’t shy away from referencing the original movies, so I think the most non-spoiler way I can put it is…
If you’re looking for a new movie that touches on the past and then does its own thing, you might not like it as much as I did.
If you want a movie that really leans into the nostalgia, tells a nice little story with it, and kind of lays the groundwork for potential future movies, then I’d recommend it.Last edited by SmashMan; 11-28-2021, 09:16 PM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Been catching up on this year’s movies since I finished my MCU run in a week:
Passing (3.5/5): Good performances from Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, Alex Skarsgard is an elite *******.
Spencer (3.5/5): I’m a sucker for Princess Di, Kristen Stewart did her thing, got a little weirder than I expected with her visions or whatever towards the end. Also watched Jackie (4/5) right before and thought it was better.
Nobody (4/5): Baby John Wick, never a miss with me.
Pig (4/5): What if John Wick was a chef and not an assassin, much more heartfelt than I expected.
Belfast (4/5): Between this and Passing, I think I just really like black and white movies, something really striking about it. The use of color in the theater scene was great. I also just love Judi Dench, any movie with M will always have a chance with me, minus Cats. Probably my second favorite movie of the year outside of No Time to Die, but haven’t really seen a 5/5 movie yet.
Also watched the Karate Kid (original version, 4.5/5) for the first time with my family on Thanksgiving. Much better than I expected, almost a perfect movie. Could’ve cut 20 minutes or so, but I really didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. Kinda don’t want to watch the sequels and just leave it as is.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

First time seeing the Karate Kid!!!! Wow!!!
I saw it in the theater several times when I was 14 with my buddies. Back when movies cost $2 a ticket.
Such a great movie. I am stunned it took you this long to see it!!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I think it’s one of those movies like The Godfather where I figured it’s referenced so much I never needed to really watch it and knew enough about it. But, also like The Godfather, it was worth it.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Been going deep into the Retro vault lately from my childhood. I own more BD’s than I want to admit (I love physical media and horde Shout and Scream Factory BD’s as well).
The Last Starfighter
Earthquake
The Towering Inferno
The Thing
I am also going to do a Airport Disaster movie run (mostly for comedy). I just love watching the old disaster movies of the 70’s....so much camp, so much fun.Now Playing on PS5:

Spider-Man Rewatch
Spider-Man 1: 3.5/5
Spider-Man 2: 4/5
Spider-Man 3: 2/5
Amazing Spider-Man: 2.5/5
Amazing Spider-Man 2: 2.5/5
Into the Spider-Verse: 5/5
Spider-Man No Way Home: 4/5
Still trying to process this, trying to be less critical. When I rewatched the entire MCU, all 25 or 26 movies in a week, Endgame hit a lot harder than it has in the past. I still think the first hour and a half is borderline trash, but everything after and including Thor going back to Asgard and talking to his mom hits. This is pretty similar, the first hour I thought was borderline garbage, the MCU comedy just has a really low hit rate with me, probably why I don't like the Guardians movies at all. But once this movie gets going, it goes (and even in the first hour there's a character sighting that made me so happy). I was following all of the leaks so I read the full plot synopsis like a month ago and again last week, and it sounded a lot less dumb when I was reading it than how it felt when I was watching it. Like Endgame, I just can't believe this is the best justification they have for the events to unfold. Also like Endgame, I can't tell if this is a great movie or just great fanservice, maybe in comic book movies it's the same thing but it's very self referential, for better or worse. Going to see it again on the 27th so I'll have my thoughts more solidified then, but this movie was very entertaining. I think watching this I just realized I'm not as big a Spider-Man fan as I thought, I should've really loved it but I couldn't shake the MCU-ness of it all. They did let some of the serious moments breathe and not just try to get you to laugh better than they usually do, but there's just too much not funny comedy for me, mainly from the villains.
Spider-Man Rankings: Into the Spider-Verse, No Way Home, Spider-Man 2, Homecoming, Far From Home, Spider-Man 1, ASM1, ASM2, Spider-Man 3
Other than that, been going crazy on Letterboxd trying to watch everything relevant for the year.
Spoiler
Petite Maman (4.5/5): French movie about a little girl making a friend after her grandma dies, 72 minutes and not a single one wasted, perfect ending, favorite movie of the year so far.
Shiva Baby (4/5): Jewish twenty something lost in life going to a shiva and dealing with everyone she's ever known and their expectations for her, funny and relatable if you're at a point in your life where you're still trying to figure it out.
Candyman (2.5/5): Never saw the original, don't like horror movies, not much to say, it was decent. Some of it didn't make sense to me but I just chalk that up to horror movies rarely making sense.
Bergman Island (3.5/5): A movie about people that make movies making movies and how art imitates life and vice versa, pretty solid, I was more into the movie being made than the events outside and was kinda disappointed I didn't get to see how it ends.
Venom Let There Be Carnage (1/5): As much as I like Spider-Man, I would've been fine killing him off to keep this trash out of the MCU. This movie sucks. The way this it's handled in NWH is perfect though.
Raya and the Last Dragon (3.5/5): This was tough to judge, ultimately I just gave it a lot of points because the animation is beautiful in a way that held my attention throughout. There's some really questionable story decisions and the villain is undercooked, but shout out to the con baby, or as Greg from Succession would say, the attack child.
CODA (4.5/5): This movie had no right being as good as it is. The story is almost like a Disney Channel Original Movie but the acting and the way it's carried make it so much more. A lot of laughs and some tears, I love this movie. A singing version of Good Will Hunting that I don't hate, and ironically still set in Massachusetts.
Minari (4/5): "We can't save each other, but money will?" Pretty much sums it up, solid movie, great performances.
Raging Fire (3/5): Donnie Yen as a cop, Nicholas Tse as his former apprentice. Pretty run of the mill action movie, but the action is dope. Could probably just watch the final fight scene and get everything you need to out of it. Bad guys were so much cooler than the cops though.
