Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Got around to watching Inside Out 2.

The first one was "sadder/hit harder" since that one was more about going from the innocence of a child into a kid growing up with different emotions/external factors that can change all that.

Inside Out 2 was more about "puberty" but it didn't dive into the cliche "teenage girl growing up, talking about boys, rebelling against parents etc." It did a good job just showing anxiety, envy and so on while combining your past emotions and it all leading to your "sense of self", and it revolved all around Rielly playing hockey too.

This is a series they could easily extend for more sequels. Next one in a few years could be "young adulthood" with Riley going to college. Then another sequel years after that with Riley becoming a parent. That would cover the 4 major points in your life which would really be a "fun for all ages" type of thing where kids and adults could relate to it.

Never Let Go - 8 out of 10. Halle Berry been on a roll. I enjoyed her last 2 movies she was in.

Unfortunately, the film itself doesn't buy into the musical elements very much, and any time somebody starts singing then any momentum the film was building in a given scene is suddenly halted. I'd like to see a version of this where several of the musical elements are cut (some that are in there are fine but also couldn't be cut either) to get the film closer to the two-hour mark, and see if there is anything else eventful in the film to merit its existence.

Sadly, even though I didn't hate the film, I just didn't find much to it either. It's a long epilogue of the first film's events and has very little to say as an overall. It was well-shot and well-acted, but that's not enough to recommend it for or buy it on home video later. This one shouldn't have been made, and it especially shouldn't have been made for its budget.

        Smile 2

Take everything I said about Joker's sequel, and flip it on its head. This was $28 million well spent, and you see every dollar on screen.

Now, I found the first film to have an incredibly eerie undertone that I believe I described as "if The Ring didn't exist, this would be a horror movie that would've stuck with me in my childhood for a long time." I don't think Smile 2 quite provides that same level of eeriness, but that is an intangible effect that I can only speak on feeling and not on witness.

That being said, if you can look past the overall dilemma being very copy-paste without exploring too much of the mystery of it all, everything else about this film surpasses the original, starting with the acting and directing. Naomi Scott absolutely kills it in the lead role. I will watch this movie again for her in a heartbeat. She completely sells the fear, trauma, and overwhelm she exudes with each passing scene, and her supporting cast holds up so much better than the first film.

Parker Finn has also maintained his directing style from his predecessor but refined it so much, from great one-shot takes to significantly more effective jump scares. I thought one of the problems with Smile was that it would've served better without any jump scares, but I just now realize they were simply ineffective, out of place, or derivative. This one had some great ones, and seeing the trailer afterward I'm glad to say they aren't in the main trailer (sadly, some are in the final trailer that just released a couple of days ago). There is one super creative sequence that ironically had me smiling throughout, and is definitely my favorite scene in the film.

As I was watching the movie, I was thinking about a way that they could've ended it, and they did end it that way that I was thinking about. It seems like the appropriate route given the story at hand, but I do question if they have an idea for Smile 3 (or Smil3, of course) afterward as a result. Should it come out, I will be there day one. This one will be added to the shelf next to the first film.

We saw it last night and agree 100%. Exceeded the first movie in every way. Naomi Scott was amazing and sold it from start to finish.

I don’t think we need another sequel. But who knows.

I highly suggest seeing it on the big screen with Dolby Atmos surround sound. Just superb.

4/5 stars and we will absolutely own this puppy on 4K BD along with the original.

Got around to watching Alien:Romulus, not going to go into details, but the wife and myself both thought this movie was terrible, as coming from someone who loved Alien and Aliens, everything after those 2 were not memorable at all (IMO)...Romulus falls into that same category.

Will get around to checking out Smile 2, as the first one wasn't too bad, definitely enjoyed the overall creepiness and uneasy feeling from that one.
People are for reviews if it backs their argument, and against them when they don't.

I thought Romulus was fine but it reminded me of the new Quiet Place where it’s like alright dude, everyone has to be quiet, how many times can you make this interesting? It seems like they were almost recreating scenes directly from the original.

Just finished Smile 2 and I'm in the camp that it was far better than the first movie. Less jump scares, relying on the great acting of the lead actor to create tension and great practical effects (minus some bad CGI blood).

I also love how they didn't over explain anything and everything is still a mystery (origins of the 'demon,' etc).

I just don't consider Doctor Sleep to be a horror movie. I forget what I called it more, almost fantasy maybe?

Whatever the case, I find it superior to The Shining, but I also think it's the best instance of a good film sequel to a good original (despite that one being a poor adaptation of the novel) and completely switching genres meanwhile.

EDIT: For the record, another "horror" movie to have a sequel switch genres to me is Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. We go from comedy/horror to comedy/sci-fi, and both worked.

Yeah, that is a good way to look at it. I still like the psychological bits of the Shining a bit more, but both are really good imho.

                          Say what?

The Shining is a classic…..forget the source material….putting that aside….I have watched the Shining dozens and dozens and dozens of times.

                          Doctor Sleep? One and done.

I think 99% of horror fans would disagree that Doctor Sleep is a superior movie to The Shining.

But art is subjective….different strokes for different folks….but that’s a doozy of a hot take my man.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if Doctor Sleep is being discussed forty years from now , or as much as The Shining has been the last forty , or next forty. Also, the one weapon The Shining has over Doctor Sleep doesn't have, is Jack Nicholson. If I see a movie on with Nicholson in it, whatever movie it may be, I'm going to watch it, even if its only for 30-45 minutes. I swear, As Good As It Gets, its a guilty pleasure of mine , when I see it on, I'm going to watch it until the very end , every time. And Jack in The Shining, is as great as it gets.

As Good As It Gets is an absolute classic. Phenomenal movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, 9 out of 10.
